Demi Lovato's 'I Love Me' Is the Week's Top-Selling Song 3/16/2020 by Gary Trust
Lovato earns her latest top 20 hit on the Hot 100 & second No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart after prior release "Anyone." Demi Lovato's "I Love Me" debuts at No. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 (dated March 21), arriving as the week's top-selling song. The track starts at No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart, with 38,000 sold in its first week, ending March 12, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data, following its March 6 release. It also drew 14.2 million U.S. streams in the week ending March 12, as it enters Streaming Songs at No. 36, and 15.9 million in all-format radio audience in the week ending March 15. Lovato lands her second Digital Song Sales No. 1, with both leaders achieved consecutively: "Anyone" opened atop the Feb. 8-dated chart. "I Love Me" is also her 12th top 10 on the ranking.
On the Hot 100, Lovato adds her 31st career entry. She has debuted at higher ranks than the starting position of "I Love Me" with just three songs, led by "Skyscraper," which soared in at No. 10 in July 2011. The Hot 100 (which blends all-genre U.S. streaming, radio airplay and sales data), Digital Song Sales and all other charts dated March 21 will update on Billboard.com tomorrow (March 17).

Finally, the 3 awful ballads are no longer in the top ten. Iโm so happy for Dua Lipa and The Weeknd. I think Blinding Lights will be the contender for the #1 spot. replaced by 2 generic synth pol tracks (and the rising Say So). I'll take them over the ballads anyday but I'm already worn out on the trend.

I'm glad Drake finally broke the record for most Hot 100 hits. It always felt like there was an asterisk by the Glee Cast, since they weren't a recording act in the traditional sense. The streaming/features debate aside at least Drake is an actual artist who appears on all of his own songs, unlike the Glee ensemble.

That's not the point, the point is that streaming era strongly favours hip hop and rap because their popularity is the biggest among people who have the most time to CONSUME the streaming services. It is NOT a correct representation of what's popular in ALL demographics (although some acts like Drake are popular in almost all demographics). That's why it WILL look odd when acts like Lil Baby might have 150 Hot 100 "hits" in five years when Madonna has 63. Streaming doesn't necessarily favor anybody. If you want to bring up that argument, I can easily bring up how radio has never and still doesn't favor Rap music generally the way it favors Pop music. There's a reason why 99% of the songs that top radio are Pop songs. Rap only became the most popular music genre in the US in late 2017. Before then, it was Pop music. The only reason why other genres aren't as dominant or seeing close to the same success on streaming is because the fans of those other genres are slow to embrace streaming like the fans of genres like rap and R&B have. The moment that changes, it'll start to even out. That's really all it is. Not true exactly. From roughly 2002-2008, Hip-Hop/R&B completely dominated the top of radio, largely because Urban and Rhythmic audiences were larger, and it was rare or nonexistent for a "pure pop" song to top Radio Songs. In fact, in 2004, every #1 single, and the Hot 100 was largely airplay driven at that time, was by a primarily R&B/Hip-Hop act. Album sales for many rappers were also large too, so it has had the limelight before. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, it was what was popular and most people preferred back then.

Yeah, prior to 1991, the Hot 100 did just focus on top 40 stations on the airplay side. Pop is a genre that R&B, rock, etc. songs had/have a shot at play, though obviously, a genre like country, while having some crossover hits, saw less of its biggest hits charting on the Hot 100 as time went on. That, though, doesn't compare to the advantage that the hottest acts hottest acts of today have in the digital/streaming era.
Aside form his album bombs, which was impossible for the hottest acts act to land back in the day, Drake has had countless featuring credits, which also was not a "thing" in the past. So, that combination has resulted in an astronomical tally for Hot 100 entries. He'll probably have the most top 10s on the Hot 100 soon enough, though if just looking at hits on which he's the lead act, he has, I think, 24? A terrific number, and more in line with where he "should be."
That's why I like how Record Research only lists/counts an act's lead-credited hits among its totals. That's partly for space issues, but also because, in the end, it makes sense. Billboard has its own way of dealing with that, though, in how it distributes points for a featuring-credits track's week-to-week performance on the H100.
In any event, records, no matter the situation, are made to be broken, but it's also acceptable to look at pre-digital/-streaming/-featuring era and digital-/streaming-era records independently.

Genuine question, not trying to throw shade at anybody, but who listens to acts like Lil Uzi Vert? Teenage boys? Girls as well? People ages 20 to 30? Moms? All those groups?
