Thank You! I'd like to personally thank everyone that took the time to both participate and follow along in the rankdown! It was such a pleasure getting to go back and revisit the music of the late Kenny Rogers as he has been a figure that has been present in my life since I first remember discovering country music as a young boy. Kenny would've been one of the first concerts my mom took me too as I remember seeing him in 1993 and just being in awe of getting to see him at such a young age (and on a random note John Michael Montgomery opened for him!).
I'm going to leave you with two more songs the first being one that I only discovered recently and the other being Kenny's final single released shortly after his passing.
Thank you all again!

"You Can't Make Old Friends" not being #3 </3 Predictable outcome of course but both deserving; would've been happy to see either one win. bboat11 NEITHER one of the Top 2 is overplayed, what format of country radio do you listen to?

Thanks for hosting, tim . Aside from the discovery of his early hits, it was nice to learn about the man behind the music. Appreciate all the info you shared. May he RIP.

thanks tim, appreciate you leading this rankdown. Other than Crazy being done so dang dirty, it was a good rankdown. Good to see the love for Lucille.

bboat11 NEITHER one of the Top 2 is overplayed, what format of country radio do you listen to? Wow, you're really showing off the fact that you weren't even alive yet in the 20th century ;)

Anyway, to expand on my "overplayed" comment, "The Gambler" and "Islands In The Stream" are his two songs that have proven to transcend the bonds of country radio, and have become pop culture behemoths in their own right. You hear them in movies, you hear them in tv shows, everybody knows they exist whether they are a country fan or not. Of course they are both great songs, so they are that way for a reason! I am surprised that "The Gambler" pulled off a win tho tbh, because it is honestly a fairly hokey subject matter that wears thin reeeeaaaaally quickly, so I thought it might pick up a couple of tankers. It was nice to have more exposure to Kenny Rogers and to appreciate his work in the light of his passing! Thanks for hosting tim.

Pretty predictable finish, but deservedly so. I was especially glad to see "Coward of the County" do so well. Thanks to tim for hosting. I knew a fair amount of the material, but there were definitely some good discoveries in here. In the spirit of the rankdown, I even went back and re-watched Kenny's sole foray into acting, Six Pack ("Love Will Turn You Around" serves as the theme song). Dated film, but pretty funny and Kenny does a respectable job as the lead. RIP Kenny

3. “Coward of the County”
My late dad loved this song. The lyric, ‘son my life is over but yours has just begun’ guts me every time. This song collapsed in the 1980 rankdown so #3 here is great. I know some find this song cheesy but I find it heartbreaking - a promise to his dad was ultimately undone one tragic night all because he stood up for his himself after a life of taking it. ’20 years of crawling was bottled up insided him’ Timeless stuff. Thanks tim

I thought "Islands In The Stream" would have taken this, but "The Gambler" is so iconic too. Great finish. Thanks for hosting tim

6. Lady (1): I loved this song back in the day, and it’s remained my favorite KR song and one of my favorite 80s ballads. Strong, heartfelt, emotional melody, vocals (the lower tones are a treat) production. Surprised it didn’t make the top 5 :( 5. You can’t make old friends (18): this was a nice discovery that the more I listened the more I liked. The lyrics were specially poignant, and hearing both in another duet was great. However, the melody wasn’t that outstanding to me, especially the chorus that is based on the virus. I didn’t know it was that loved here. I guess the lyrics is a big reason for that. 4. Lucille (16): this is a nice song with a singalong vibe to it, but I like more than half of the Greatest Hits songs better than it. 3. Coward of the county (7): I’ve always really liked the beat, music, melody and lyrics. A standout of the GH album, and a deserving top 5 here. 2. Islands in the stream (2): yay!! This was a personal chart-topper, one of my favorite songs this year and the decade. Another great contribution to music from the Bee-Gees. Great melody (that slight key change in the second verse), instrumentation (especially in the bridge), vocals (both emote as good as always in the verses, and do great harmonies together). 1. The gambler (5): I assumed this was gonna be one of the top contenders for this RD, as it‘s become a classic with strong country music elements. This was a quick favorite of mine from the GH album, and one that I’d often play. Still sounds pretty good. Great winner! Thanks tim for a great RD that made me expand my catalog of favorite KR songs.
