Sweet Music Man:
The Kenny Rogers Rankdown

In light of his passing I thought it appropriate to launch a rankdown to pay tribute to the great Kenny Rogers. He was one of the progenitors of country-pop crossover at the superstar level selling millions of records and was the star of TV movies based on “The Gambler” and other songs, making him a superstar in the `70s and ’80s. Rogers thrived for some 60 years before he retired from touring in 2017 at age 79. Kenny has been bestowed with numerous honors throughout his career including being inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, three Grammys and six CMA Awards. Most recently Rogers’ signature song “The Gambler” was added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry in 2018.

Considering that Kenny has charted more than 120 songs going all the way back to 1967, it would be nearly impossible to do a rankdown that would encompass such a vast discography. Therefore, I've narrowed it down to a list of 25 songs that includes all of his biggest hits including four duets as well as two songs from when Kenny was with The First Edition.

Please make sure to PM with your songs ranked from #1 (your favorite) down to #25 (your least favorite). I do not plan on extending this out any further so please make sure to take advantage of the time that you have!

There were a couple of specific goals in mind with this rankdown which first and foremost was trying to get as many participants as possible. I wanted to capture a good representation of Kenny’s discography as there were five different decades to narrow down, so I’m hoping I was able to do just that. I know that there were probably a handful of songs that got left out, but hopefully this will help introduce some others to Kenny’s music that maybe had only been familiar with a few of his biggest hits.

I’ll be sure to feature more songs, though, so please feel free to send them my way!

We’re only a few days into the launch of this rankdown and we’ve already received two lists which along with mine bring us up to three participants. The 25 songs included encompass a wide ranging career of over five decades and I’m hoping that with a condensed list this will help turn out some that might’ve otherwise passed on this. Let’s all come together and honor the late Kenny Rogers!

His Greatest Hits from ~81 was the first original cassette I remember playing, as my parents bought it in their first trip to the US. My dad had this cassette in his car for many years, so we played it often. I ended liking all the songs in that cassette.
Interested in listening to a few other songs, especially because I didn’t really like KG songs that I recently discovered in 80s rankdowns.

I just submitted my list. I'm not armchair quarterbacking, and thanks for doing this by the way, but had the Last Ten Years been in the rankdown it would have been in my top 3. The 9/11 and Christopher Reeves (Superman) references gets me bad. And I think he sang the hell out of it!

For those that watched the ACM Presents: Our Country last night there was a touching tribute to Kenny Rogers from Brad Paisley and Darius Rucker who teamed up to perform "Lucille" and "The Gambler" along with Luke Bryan who performed "Coward of the County". The final word came from his longtime friend and collaborator, Lionel Richie, who said "We lived so much life together. I want to say to all his fans, he enjoyed the ride.". We enjoyed the ride as well and thank you for the wonderful memories...now let's all come together to honor The Gambler himself, Kenny Rogers, and rank away!

Well, I recently bought a multi-CD compilation but I haven’t listened to it in in full yet, so this RD beat me to it
I also managed to pay closer attention to lyrics, especially from some classics I’ve heard for almost 40 years but I hadn’t really listened to the stories. Great opportunity to do so... and get a bit teary eyed in the process...
