“The Greatest” was released in April 1999 as the first single from Kenny’s twenty-third studio album She Rides Wild Horses. This remained a consistent top 15 contender during its entire run and even snuck into the top 10 towards the middle of the rankdown. Both castleoblivion26 and George Strait Junkie lose a top 5 while four others depart with a top 10 favorite. While this didn’t receive any last place rankings it did garner four bottom 5 rankings including two near the end which pushed this outside of finishing in the top 10.

“Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town” is the last song to exit that was released while Kenny was with the First Edition. The record was a major hit for them and reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1969. Written by Mel Tillis, it is about a paralyzed veteran who either lies helplessly in bed or sits helplessly in his wheelchair as his wife paints herself up to go out for the evening without him; he believes she is going in search of a lover, and as he hears the door slam behind her, he pleads for her to reconsider. This remained a consistent top 15 contender for its run and even flirted with the top 5 early on thanks to a second top ranking placement from mamooshka followed by a top 10 from myself. The majority of the group placed this inside their top 15 with only someguy putting it in his bottom 5. Both Mirago and George Strait Junkie depart with a top 10 while Kanenrá:ke loses a top 5.

“She Believes in Me” was released in April 1979 as the second single from the album The Gambler and was a number one hit on the Billboard Country Singles chart. This was also a crossover hit as it peaked in the top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart and number one on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. This didn’t receive a single bottom 5 ranking from anyone as it received a steady string of support in the top 20 as well as the top 15. And while no one loses a top 5 four participants depart with a top 10 including gonecountry , Juanca , gardyfan , and George Strait Junkie .

Another duet will be leaving next and comes in as the third most polarizing song of the rankdown. A handful of participants will lose a top 10 while two others will depart with a top 5 favorite.

“We’ve Got Tonight” is the title track to Kenny’s fourteenth studio album and was recorded as a duet with Scottish pop star Sheena Easton. A number one hit on the Billboard Country Singles chart, "We've Got Tonight" reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart, and number two on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. The song was honored by ASCAP as the Most Performed Country Song of 1983. This comes in as the third most polarizing song as four participants say goodbye to another bottom 5 song while a handful of others lose a top 10. It was only able to sneak back into the top 15 after a top 5 came in from Juanca who was also joined there by bboat11 .

“Through the Years” was released in December 1981 as the fourth single to Kenny’s eleventh studio album Share Your Love. This comes in as the fifth most polarizing song and as another three participants depart with a bottom 5 while taylor , gardyfan , and myself lose a top 5. Two more lose a top 10 while fearlessarrow becomes only the second participant to have to say goodbye with their top ranking song.

Before 1980 drew to a close, Rogers would have his first #1 pop single, “Lady,” which topped the Hot 100 for six weeks as well as four weeks on the Adult Contemporary chart and one at country. The song was released from 1981's Share Your Love was was produced by Lionel Richie. He also scored his first #1 pop album, Greatest Hits, which spent two weeks atop the chart and would eventually be RIAA-certified for selling 12 million copies in the U.S. alone. By the end of 1980s, Rogers would go down as the #4 country singles artist of the decade, the #12 pop singles artist, and the #3 pop albums artist. Rogers was one of the first country stars to consistently cross over not just albums but singles to the pop charts and had 11 top 10 pop singles, and 28 top 40s in total over the course of his career, the vast majority of those in the 1980s.
In 1983, Rogers teamed up with the Brothers Gibb for Eyes That See in the Dark. The album's biggest hit, “Islands in the Stream", was a duet with Dolly Parton and topped the country, adult contemporary, and pop charts, and was the #1 country single of the year. It would later be certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for shipping two million copies in the United States.
The following year’s What About Me saw Rogers co-producing himself, alongside pop titan David Foster, with the album leaning with a pop sound. Its lead title single, a trio with Kim Carnes and James IngramIt, failed to make the top 50 on the country charts but did manage to become a top 15 pop hit. The follow-up single would see more success with “Crazy" topping the country charts in early 1985.
With the release of The Heart of the Matter in 1985 Kenny's crossover success began to diminish somewhat. The album was produced by George Martin who was most famous for his work with the Beatles and featured a pair of country chart-toppers including “Tomb of the Unknown Love” and “Morning Desire". In 1986, Kenny switched gears and worked with rock stalwart Jay Graydon who produced his next album They Don’t Make Them Like They Used To. The album is notable for featuring a song written for Rogers by Prince under the pseudonym Joey Coco called “You’re My Love” (hello SHOOTER). The title became a top 10 hit while "Through the Years" was a number two hit on the country charts.
I Prefer the Moonlight, Rogers’ 1987 album, featured five producers and 15 songwriters and spun a trio of singles making it to the top six of the country chart, including the Ronnie Milsap duet “Make No Mistake, She’s Mine". The song, written by Kim Carnes, had been recorded by Carnes as a duet with Barbra Streisand three years prior but it was Rogers and Milsap who turned it into #1 country hit.
His last album of the decade, 1989’s Something Inside So Strong, featured duets with everyone from Anne Murray to Ronald Isley, and earned Rogers one top 10 country single with "The Vows Go Unbroken (Always True to You)".
"Love the World Away” Released: 1980 from The Urban Cowboy soundtrack / #1 Hit "What Are We Doin’ In Love" with Dottie West Released: 1981 from Wild West / #1 Hit ”A Love Song” Released: 1982 from Love Will Turn You Around / #3 Hit "You Are So Beautiful" Released: 1983 from We've Got Tonight / Album Track "Make No Mistake, She's Mine" with Ronnie Milsap Released: 1987 from I Prefer the Moonlight / #1 Hit "Planet Texas" Released: 1989 from Something Inside So Strong / #30 Hit

15. The Greatest (22): Very close to put it in my top 20, but the melody felt like borrowing a lot from previous Kenny hits, and the main chorus left me waiting for more. 14. Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town (13): Another song from Greatest Hits that I liked in terms of vocal and musical arrangements. I had it in my top 10 most of the time, but then I paid more attention to the lyrics. I already knew a good chunk of the lyrics, and I appreciated quite a bit the first 2/3 of the song for it, but I only managed to pay attention to the last half for this RD --and then the lines about the gun were enough of a turnoff to take it out of my top 10. 13. She Believes In Me (6): A BIG favorite off the GH album. I love the melody and his heartfelt vocals that greatly accompany the lyrics. It's a pretty strong pop/AC/country/whatever ballad of the early 80s. Sad to see it miss the top 10. 12. We Got Tonight (3): Like with Dreamer, I assumed I was gonna be an outlier due to my preference for pop-leaning songs. Regardless, this is one of my favorite 80s duets. I was a big Sheena fan in the early 80s, and her voice is incredible in this song. She's a great complement to Kenny's voice -putting aside the age difference - and the melody here is pretty strong. Also the production is power ballad epic. One of my top 20 songs of 1983. 11. Through The Years (15): This was my 3rd favorite discovery in this RD. Very strong lyrics, melody and vocals. So I have left 23, 19, [these two are in a different league from the next songs, so I hope they leave soon...] 18, 16, 14, 9, 7, 5, 2, 1

Darn not my #1 going out at #11 :'(
I wasn't familiar with really any Kenny Rogers songs (I knew "Islands in the Stream" and "Lady" although I didn't used to like the latter) so I decided to just sample some of the songs that made it really high on iTunes after his passing away and "Through the Years" was the one that caught my attention the most.
I really had no idea how this would pan out, so I'll just say that I'm really happy "Love Will Turn You Around" made the top 10!

I really had no idea how this would pan out, so I'll just say that I'm really happy "Love Will Turn You Around" made the top 10! Me too ... and as for “Through the Years” I was really hoping to see it make the top 10 but I knew it was a tall order given that it was probably a discovery for some. I’m so glad that you not only discovered this gem doing the rankdown but then put it as your top ranking song. I think this kind of song is a grower and might be one of those songs that someone might rank higher on the second or third go around.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to do any reveals as planned this evening, so before we dive into the top ten I wanted to go ahead and highlight some of Kenny's songs from the 1990s. Although his string of hits tapered off in the 1990s he continued to record and release albums regularly. In 1998, Rogers created his own record label, Dreamcatcher Entertainment, which coincided with the release of his next album, She Rides Wild Horses. In 1999, Rogers enjoyed a return to the charts with the hit "The Greatest" and scored another hit with "Buy Me a Rose" off the same album. The song made Rogers (who was 61 years old at the time) the oldest country singer to have a Number One hit.

“Sweet Music Man” was released as the final single to Kenny’s 1977 album Daytime Friends. The song has has been covered by Dolly Parton who included the song on her Here You Come Again album as well as Reba McEntire who released it as a single from her Greatest Hits Volume III: I'm a Survivor compilation. Once this was inside the top ten it remained a steady contender for the remainder of its run. It picked up a handful of top 10 rankings and a trio of top 5’s from someguy and kw9461 along with bboat11 who placed this just shy of his top ranking song. This only received two bottom 5 rankings from gonecountry and .indulgecountry .

“Daytime Friends” was released as the lead single to Kenny’s third studio album of the same name. The song was Rogers' second number one country hit as a solo artist. This was a top 5 contender for the better half of its run only to be pushed outside when samo🦕 delivered the first bottom 5 ranking. Both taylor and Kanenrá:ke joined him as the rankdown came to a close and because of that it just wasn’t ever able to recover. This song did have its fair share of support, though, as it received four top 10 rankings along with four top 5’s from myself, mamooshka, someguy , and bboat11 .
