Come On Over (1997)

After the release of her breakthrough second album The Woman In Me, which only started posting massive sales after songs like "Any Man of Mine" were released, Shania and Mutt worked entirely alone on her next album, what would become Come On Over. Shania decided not to tour off of the second album, feeling that to give a powerful show, she needed a few more pieces of powerful music to add to her catalog. Given much more creative freedom than with the last album, she and Mutt worked as early as 1994 on writing this album (they would sometimes work together and would oftentimes work apart and later intertwine ideas), collaborating on a variety of country pop numbers, mostly uptempo, and sought to break the traditional mold of the country music "formula" and explore the country pop subgenre to the absolute fullest extent possible (although the song "Rock This Country!" would remain the same on all editions). Shania let her sonic preferences be known, but ultimately gave Mutt full control of the production duties. He took his sweet time, dedicating overzealous amounts of time to each track on the album.
And that work truly paid off. Released on November 4, 1997, with the fully pop versions released in 1998 and 1999, Come On Over quickly made history. To date, it is the best-selling country music album of all time, the best-selling studio album of all time by a female artist of any genre, the best-selling album of all time by a Canadian artist, and the ninth best-selling album overall of all time (in the US and worldwide). It's also the second best-selling album of the Nielsen SoundScan era, which began in 1991. To date, it has sold over 40 million copies, over half of which were sold here in the United States, with over 15.7 million sold according to Nielsen SoundScan. On the Billboard Top Country Albums chart, Come On Over debuted at #1 and stayed there for 50 non-consecutive weeks, a record the album held by itself until 2019, when it tied with Luke Combs' 2017 album This One's For You. It stayed in the Top 10 of the Top Country Albums chart for 151 weeks. Of the sixteen tracks, twelve became singles and most of them are Shania's greatest radio/chart successes. The album was nominated for a total of eight Grammy Awards over the course of two ceremonies, including Album of the Year and Best Country Album. And we're finally bringing the legend itself right here to Pulse to rank it!
We'd been talking a couple days ago about a certain track from this album and how to rank it based on its versions. Upon a couple days of thought, I've decided that you may rank the entire album based on whichever version you prefer. If you like a certain song better in its country edition as opposed to its pop version, feel free to rank the country edition. Or, especially if you're a pop girlie, you can rank the entire pop album! You can even do a mix-and-match if you like various tracks from both versions! Please note that you do NOT need to tell me which version you've ranked.
