Welcome to the Shania Twain Album Series!
Shania Twain was born Eileen Regina Edwards on August 28, 1965 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. She is legally registered as having 50% Native American blood, as her father Jerry Twain was an Ojibwa from the Mattagami First Nation. Her childhood--as she details in her 2011 memoir From This Moment On--was incredibly difficult. Her parents divorced when she was two years old and upon moving to Timmins, Ontario, her mother Sharon married Jerry Twain, who later adopted Shania and her two sisters Jill and Carrie Ann. They also had Mark, Shania's only brother, together. But it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows of course: Money was hard to find and food was almost always scarce. From a young age, Shania witnessed Sharon and Jerry during a lot of vicious fights, many of which became physical. Shania convinced her mom in mid-1979 to take the rest of the family to a homeless shelter for assistance and they returned to Jerry in 1981.
Shania started singing in bars in Timmins from the time she was just eight years old to help her family with bills and would earn $20 between midnight and 1am after alcohol was put away. She hated the ordeal, but appreciated it as her own kind of performing arts school on the road. At the age of 10, she wrote her first songs, "Is Love a Rose" and "Just Like the Storybooks" which were rhyming fairy tales. At age 13, she was invited to play on the CBC's Tommy Hunter Show; while attending Timmins High and Vocational School, she was also the lead singer of a band called Longshot, which covered Top 40 hits.
Shania graduated from Timmins High in June 1983, eager to expand her musical horizons. After Longshot disbanded, she was approached by Diane Chase's band Flirt and toured all over Ontario with them. She also took singing lessons from a Toronto based coach and would often clean his house as payment. In the fall of 1984, Shania was noticed and was eventually sent down to Nashville to record some demos, which she found nearly impossible to finance. She became acquainted with local country singer Mary Bailey, who helped her with getting to record some demos. They were unsuccessful however: Shania had an interest to become a pop or rock singer, not a country artist! This desire would eventually cause a two-year falling out between she and Mary.
Shania's first break eventually came on February 8, 1987 when conductor John Kim Bell, who Mary had introduced Shania to, staged for her to appear at a fundraiser so she could perform with Broadway star Bernadette Peters, guitarist Don Ross, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Her performance wasn't received well, and Bell was convinced that Shania needed to stay far away from pop music and focus on being a country artist.
On November 7, 1987, Shania's parents were tragically killed in a car accident and she moved back to Timmins to take care of her siblings, all of whom were younger than her. She later moved them all to Huntsville, Ontario, where she would support them by performing at the Deerhurst Resort nearby. Several years later, her siblings moved out on their own, and she immediately assembled a demo tape of her songs and her manager in Huntsville set her up to present the material to record executives. She caught the attention of a few labels, including Mercury Nashville, who signed her within a few months.
The rest truly is country music history. Shania Twain has since gone on to sell over 100 million records, making her the best-selling female artist in country music history and one of the best-selling artists of all time. She's known as the Queen of Country Pop and has received five Grammy Awards, stars on the Canada and Hollywood Walks of Fame, and an induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. She is the only female artist in history to have three consecutive albums be certified Diamond by the RIAA.
And we're going to be ranking her albums! This album series is a long time coming, as the Shania singles rankdown was hosted by .indulgecountry 3 years ago now. We are going to go in order of release; we will then rank any extras/one-offs/etc. Hopefully as a bonus, we can try to rank The Complete Limelight Sessions as well! I hope you all will join me in celebrating Shania Twain and ranking these incredible albums!
