39. Long Time Gone (99): I’m not a country or Dixie hater, but I didn’t get this one at all. Music is far too honky tonky and melody isn’t that great to me.
37. Can’t Fight the Moonlight (12): I was a big fan of this one back then. Very nice melody, music, vocals. Pretty good pop song.
28. The Whole World (72): I may have needed a few more listens to appreciate it more. It got a bit annoying, but this was a first listen.
25. Move Bitch (87): Like Ja Rule, Mystikal ruins everything for me. Awful vocals. And the melody isn’t as catchy as Rollout
23. Like I Love You (59): This was a nice solo launching single, but a bit too Michael Jackson wannabe. The music is cool but the melody and vocals not as cool.
17. Without Me (65): This was a fun, guilty pleasure,. It’s still fun, but in no way or form better than COMC.
15. Rock the Boat (86): I wanted to like it, but this was too plain to me. Same type of melody with little variation
14. More than a Woman (54): This is a nice tune, but again a bit samey samy… also, I can’t at people ranking a Latin-infused song higher than similar songs sung by Latinos in previous RDs. Interestingly that she has two songs with titles of 70s disco hits
13. Whenever, Wherever (1): I guess the consolation price is that this made the top 15. This is a gem and a half, though, and very much deserving of a top 10 in this RD. I was especially glad to see a song in the Hot 100 top 10 with Andean (especially Peruvian/ Bolivian) musical influence. Adding that with Spanish guitars, and dance pop was outstanding fusion, a trademark of Shakira’s music. At the same time, I was pissed that even though Enrique, Ricky, Marc, and Xtina had all made the top 2, Shakira had to settle for a #6 peak. At least she did make the UK top 2, and the #1 in a lot of countries.
12. Hella Good (40): Music is very fine, but the melody could’ve been much better. That chorus is kinda weak for me.
11. Don’t Let Me Get Me (26): Correct order of Pink’s songs in this RD ☺ Great vocals, lyrics and melody, but production could’ve been a bit higher.
10. The Middle (35): Catchy, short but effective, happy rock pop tune. And my lone non-top 20 left
9. Complicated (4): A classic! Good music, melody, vocals, production, and strong imagery. Great to see it in the top 10.
8. Lose Yourself (6): I would’ve ranked this at #1, but I had already put it atop the 2003 RD, so I deducted some points.
7. All I Wanted (7): Great song! One of my favorite rock chick songs. She delivered with her vocals and attitude, and the music and melody are spot on.
6. In The End (2): No top 5?! I love the combo of rap and rock here. The instrumentation is epic, including that dark piano intro. Chester’s vocals were great both emotionally singing and screaming. One of my decade favorites, for sure.
5. Just Like A Pill (8): This is one of my favorite Pink songs, and by far my favorite of her pre-IND eras. I only wish the drums were real, rock drums, not fake synth drums, which tone down the energy and quality a few notches. But she sangs emotes here; the lyrics and video are strong, too.
4. Worth It (10): Top notch hit by Missy. I ranked it higher in another RD, and just for that reason I deducted a few points.
3. A Thousand Miles (13): I really appreciate the music and melody here, albeit vocals aren't that good. Great piano, for sure. Glad to see this different kinda song in the top 10, though.
2. Can’t Get You Out of My Head (3): Now, how THIS could get a #100? unless it’s specifically to tank it. This is a gem and a half. I loved it since I first heard it, and was one of my favorite songs of the year/ decade, and it’s my favorite Kylie song. Vibe, production, melody, vocals, all work perfectly. PLUS, the Blue Monday mashup illustrates that this could’ve easily been created by a top notch alt artist.
1. Family Affair (18): I really like this, and I think it’s one of Mary’s best (I like BWY a tad better), but at some point gets a bit repetitive as most of this type of R&B songs do. Congrats to MJB, as she deserves to be a winner of a RD (although personally of course CGYOOMH was miles better than this)
Thanks for hosting,
