I noticed she confirmed Ben Platt. I love him but would have been more excited for someone more relevant. It seems like anything they record will be destined to be some album track only the big fans remember in a few years. But you never know, Ben may want to take a crack at something a little outside the box for him and it might surprise us. Either way, I’m sure they will sound amazing on it.

UPDATE: SHE IS PERFORMING "IT'S QUIET UPTOWN" ON THURSDAY'S SHOW. THIS IS NOT A DRILL!! Incredibly smart move. Put some interest back into her version right before the play hits Disney+!

UPDATE: SHE IS PERFORMING "IT'S QUIET UPTOWN" ON THURSDAY'S SHOW. THIS IS NOT A DRILL!! Thanks for the info ! I didn’t care for their production on this classic but I believe her vocals have never been as crisp in her career as during the pandemic. It’s beyond amazing especially considering that about to enter year 19 of her career !

It's Quiet Uptown is such a sad song. I wonder if she will sing the whole thing. It seems like it would be a travesty not to.

A friend of mine IRL asked me to give her 5 Kelly songs to listen to. She's not really a big fan and I'm trying to make her into one. :) What 5 songs would you pick?
My thoughts: Behind These Hazel Eyes Sober Stronger(?) Piece by Piece Whole Lotta Woman
Stronger is really just there because I feel it's obligatory and I don't know what I'd replace it with lol. But I feel like these songs show off her catalog well.
Other thoughts: Because of You, Let Me Down, Love So Soft, Beautiful Disaster (live), Maybe, Irvine.

I feel like I'd have totally different lists based on whether or not the person has heard any KC song at all or is just a casual pop music listener and only knows her top 2-3 biggest hits, and then also what that person is into--big vocals, good lyrics, acoustic-friendly production, etc.

The answer:
1. Miss Independent 2. Since U Been Gone 3. Already Gone 4. Stronger 5. Piece by Piece (Album Version)
I could be convinced swapping 4/5 with Let Me Down, since everyone I've played it for becomes obsessed.

But I feel like these songs show off her catalog well. Other thoughts: Because of You, Let Me Down, Love So Soft, Beautiful Disaster (live), Maybe, Irvine. Hmm. If she already knows she 'isn't a big fan' by now I would assume it's because she has heard and wasn't impressed by the bigger hit singles, so I'd skip those entirely in favor of trying with some album tracks. Maybe something like: - Sober (was technically a 'single,' but very unlikely that your friend knows it) or Maybe - You Love Me or Let Me Down - Bad Reputation - Heat - Would You Call That Love If she's a sucker for ballads maybe go for this combo instead: - Sober/Maybe - Honestly - Tightrope - Slow Dance - Addicted See if you can find out what exactly it was about Kelly's singles she wasn't drawn to in the first place. If your friend was never a fan of pop-rock for example, I wouldn't recommend Let Me Down probably, just to stay on the safe side. Both of my above lists are admittedly unorthodox but if I were trying to initiate someone into the Cult of Kelly, I'd be going for those deep, deep cuts that casual listeners are almost guaranteed to have never heard before.

@antigonerising both of those lists are great! I'd also probably stay away from any of the singles. And for Tightrope don't forget about the tour version. Both are good versions, I lean towards the tour one.

Sorry, what I meant by "isn't really a big fan" is that she is indifferent to Kelly, not that she actively dislikes Kelly. I don't think she's heard many Kelly songs other than "Stronger" (which she kind of likes) and "Since U Been Gone) (I don't know her opinion on this one.) I was thinking "Stronger" because she knows it and it's Kelly's biggest hit so it feels weird not putting it in Kelly's "top 5" and BTHE is there because it's a personal favorite, lol.
This friends absolute favorites are Nicki Minaj and Cardi B, but also really likes P!nk and pop music in general so I know there's room for Kelly. She's not a big pop radio listener though. She tends to not really dig the ballads as much.

Love this. Been waiting for her to get one of these! It’s agonizing that RCA has been so lax about getting her accurate certifications! I suppose they’ll never be updated now that she’s left the label. 😭

She tends to not really dig the ballads as much. Oh, ok, so she's just not familiar with her at all, almost. That broadens up things quite a bit, especially since she likes P!nk. In that case, I'd take the first list of mine but replace Sober with BTHE, since ballads aren't her thing so much. If you can get her into Kelly's upbeat stuff you can always introduce her to the great ballads later! Your friend already knows Stronger so don't take up a slot with that. I'd also be tempted to suggest The Day We Fell Apart, but I don't know what other song I'd remove to make room for it.

Although she sounded fantastic, I'm not a fan of that song. Looking forward to tomorrow.

LOL i doubt that Walk Away is #12?! why didn't they release another single?

I just looked on the RIAA's website to see with my own eyes if those certifications were correct and... wow. They really did her dirty. I guess it was different back then since everything was sales based and a lot of people did end up buying the album. But still.. Also, I have to imagine over the years that she's amassed some decent chunk of streaming of older tracks? That has to put some of those singles over the multi platinum status.
Can Atlantic ever certify those singles or is it solely in RCA's hands? I'm not sure how that works.

The Kelly Clarkson Show is giving me A-grade entertainment. KC herself is going through some stuff right now and I'm happy she got a pat on the shoulder through her Emmy win. Her show is a happy pill in these tough times.

Her show is a happy pill in these tough times. The in-studio light fun stuff is great and plays into her hyper personality perfectly. I have to say that without all the distractions (squirrel!!) and having to be ON all the time, she's doing fantastic with these summer shows. I think having to do all of this over zoom is going to benefit her greatly in the long run. Her interviewing skills have grown immensely without all the other stuff going on. I hate to be selfish and say that I needed these summer shows because I know she's going through some big shit at home, but I've needed these shows just for some happy tv. I also like that they've been pretty topical without getting preachy.

I’ve never heard Just Like Heaven before and honestly, Kelly makes it sound so fresh and fun. It sounds like she could put that on al album today and no one would know how old the song is. It’s not my favorite song as it has no nostalgia and no major hook to it but she is just killing everything she sings right now. I really hope she is recording an album while her voice is where it is at right now.

Wow. Because of You peaked at #7? I could've sworn it felt like it was a #1 song.

It's so weird that "Because of You" is actually her biggest hit worldwide but "only" her 5th biggest hit in the U.S.

Gorgeous. This is, however, one time where I wish they had broken their "cram this into one minute and forty five seconds to fit on the show" rule. The song tells such a beautiful and heartbreaking story that it does lose a bit of the emotional punch not hearing it in its entirety. Still, voice crisp and clear as ever!

I was hoping for the whole song.

^She officially sold 36 million singles right before MLWSWY. Actually she's sold over 50 million singles WW by now.
4 of the 5 Breakaway singles, MLWSWY and Stronger were massive!
