So I was thinking what direction, sonically, the next album will be. She went on record a while back saying that it would be a combination of Breakaway, Stronger and MoL. (I don't have a source, but I know I've seen that somewhere.) This was pre-divorce and pre-covid, however.
Do we think she will continue down the path of "Soulelly" with another album in the same vein as MoL? Or, will she go back to her pop/rock roots? Personally, I'd be fine with either...as much as I like MoL, I do think she does pop/rock "best" but I think I'd want something more in the vein of My December from her (a little more "rock" with pop elements) as opposed to the Breakaway/Stronger/AIEW sound--which was more pop with rock elements.
I think she would do well going further down the Soul/R&B sound too. Or country. Lol she could do anything, but I'm curious what direction you guys think she'll take with the next album sonically.

I’m fine with her giving us something in the vein of AIEW with a mix of all the sounds. That had some soul, some rock, some pop, some country, a little for everybody. MOL was a bit too soul for me, but at this point in her career I hope she does what she wants and enjoys it. I just need her to be touring again. I was so sad when her 2020 Vegas Residency got cancelled because I was all set to go. Hope she had something lined up again because it’s been too long since I seen her. Up until MOL I had seen her live for every album era.

I LOOOOVE all these 90s throwbacks- takes me back to my childhood. After all these years, I shouldn’t be surprised by her crazy versatility and vocal agility with registers and runs, but she got me again. She continues to separate herself from the pack holding that vocal chameleon title....

If we get one or two poppy anthem songs every 4-5 years at this point I'd be extremely grateful.

To this day I feel the Stronger era singles should've gone:
1) Mr Know It All 2) Stronger 3) Let Me Down 4) Dark Side 5) You Love Me
Despite one of her biggest hits being part of this era, this is still arguably the era RCA screwed up the most by ending it early for that GH album that I would argue did more harm than good for Kelly's career.

I personally would have gone this way and scrapped the Greatest Hits singles for a Stronger re-release. There were so many things they could have done different. IMO, doing Dark Side 3rd instead of I Forgive You / Let Me Down totally killed all the momentum she had going from Stronger (WDKY). 1.) I Forgive You 2.) Stronger 3.) Let Me Down 4.) Mr Know It All 5.) Bonus Track: People Like Us 6.) Bonus Track: Catch My Breath Country Radio: Breaking Your Own Heart ft. male artist

After "Dark Side" underperformed I'm really doubtful anything else would have done much better. "Stronger" was big enough that it sort of lasted into the summer, and the new-project single/album injected some life and press that wouldn't have happened otherwise. I also think she released her Greatest Hits album in one of the last years a project like that was even remotely viable, and it's impressive it sold as much as it did. The problem with Stronger is it was chalk-full of could-be hits, but only one guaranteed hit. There's a world where "Let Me Down," "I Forgive You," "Dark Side," "You Love Me," "Don't Be A Girl Boy About It" could do well, but it would have required a lot of work and star alignment. They were smart to keep the big smash for single number two, and force "Mr. Know It All" into success territory by a sheer mountain of promo. They also left some good stuff on the cutting room floor, as evidenced by the leaks. In an ideal world, I would have gone... 1. Break the Silence 2. Stronger 3. I Forgive You 4. Dark Side 5. Let Me Down/You Love Me/Mr. Know It All Alone* Then wait until the next Q4, probably a year later, to go with the GH. Even a year later the "Catch My Breath" sound would have been more welcome on radio I think. ETA: *that stupid poster made me perpetually ignore this song but it was a great single option

RCA also pulled a classic RCA move by waiting far too long after WDKY was done to service Dark Side to radio (WDKY had a long run but I'm not a fan of coasting when you see that a song has peaked and is slowly on its way out). There was time for DS to be a spring release but it ended up being a summer one instead, and I do think that is an instance where the season made a difference.
1. LMD 2. You Love Me 3. Stronger (WDKY) 4. Dark Side, Honestly, or The War Is Over
I would have been fine with the era closing after this, because I did like how seamlessly the album flowed into the GH which then carried into WIR. We really got a steady stream of content for two straight years. The re-release idea in place of a GH would have also been nice, though. I would have chosen Alone as the re-release single.

I remember being so annoyed at the time because LMD was rumored to be the first single and then IFY was rumored to be the fourth and none came to fruition.

Even a year later the "Catch My Breath" sound would have been more welcome on radio I think. ETA: *that stupid poster made me perpetually ignore this song but it was a great single option I 100% agree on the DS underperforming bit, which I think is even more frustrating because that could have been avoided by releasing LMD as the third single in place of DS. Obviously we will never know if LMD would've smashed, but I really think it would've done at least as well as MKIA did. DS completely killed any momentum she had left though. I also agree that they waited too long after Stronger started declining to release the new single. They should've had LMD (or DS) ready to go in like mid-late April, and instead they waited until mid-late May to even start pushing it. By then, I do think DS's "slower" tempo probably hindered it a bit and would've been better off saved until the fall, with something more upbeat released for the summer. (Whether that be LMD, IFY, Alone, or even Tell Me a Lie, the song she gave to One Direction, which would have fit well on Stronger imo.) I certainly don't think she would've 100% had a second Breakaway-sized era on her hands, but I also don't think it was entirely out of the realm of possibility she could have. RCA just screwed it up, big time. I guess I just think, even in 2012, a Greatest Hits album was such an outdated concept, especially for someone like Kelly who has continued making music after its release. Especially when it cuts another album era--one that had some huge potential singles still waiting--down considerably.

I remember being so annoyed at the time because LMD was rumored to be the first single and then IFY was rumored to be the fourth and none came to fruition. I will be forever irritated that "Mr. Know It All" was the lead single after all the "Let Me Down" leak hype. LMD is "Behind These Hazel Eyes [Part 3]," but it hits so hard. Sure, MKIA was a hit, but as dbhmr alluded to, literally any song they lead with probably would've been a hit. So why not give that slot to a better, more exciting song? My ideal Stronger singles would've been: 1. Let Me Down 2. Stronger 3. I Forgive You 4. Dark Side 5. You Love Me (I doubt we'd have gotten this far, but let Kelly release her fave song as the era closer like they did with "Walk Away" and "All I Ever Wanted").

I blasted the hell out of that LMD demo all summer 2011 in my beat up Volkswagen Cabrio convertible and let me tell you - it sounded like a hit! I will never understand how they chose MKIA as the lead, except I will say the song slays live a bit (but not as much as LMD). It's tied with Addicted for me, as the biggest missed opportunity of her career. (Breakaway was already an enormous era, but Addicted would have gone #1, I'm convinced).

I am NOT here for this MKIA shade. One of the best songs of her career don't @ me.

Kelly has always been hit or miss with her singles though. I don’t know if it’s all the labels fault or if she had a part in it, but some single choices have really derailed her eras. MKIA is a cute song but was definitely not first single worthy. And that’s How I Feel right now, so just let me be.

Also, I maintain that "Hello" is the perfect song to bridge the second and third acts of a rom-com.
