Pulse Rankdown: 1988 Year-End Active Rock Chart (Finished)

1) PM me (rowellfarm490 ) your rankings of the top 100 Mainstream Rock songs of 1988. Rank the songs by your preference from #1 (best) down to #100 (worst).
2) An inverse point system will be used to determine the point total for each song. Song #1 gets 100 points, #2 gets 99 points... all the way down to #100 which gets 1 point.
3) The due date for submission is Sunday May 31, 2020 at 10PM EST.
4) ALL songs must be ranked.
5) To avoid sending me a list with extra lines, please click BBCode below the text box before you paste your list.
6) The rankings of each participant will be posted when a song is revealed during this Rankdown.

Well, hello there. Welcome to the 1988 Year-End Active Rock rankdown! This is Rowell and I'm back yet again to be your host as we rank down the top 100 mainstream rock songs of 1988. I was hoping that I would get the chance to host this year's mainstream rock rankdown since I was born in 1988. Just thinking about it, it's quite phenomenal that we've now covered over 30 years of music in these rock chart rankdowns. Anyway, just giving this list a quick lookover it's very clear that we have left the 1990s WAY behind now.

The mainstream rock format was dominated in 1988 by 80s staples Van Halen and Robert Plant each of whom have 4 songs in this rankdown. Bruce Springsteen, Steve Winwood, John Mellencamp, and David Lee Roth were also prominent during this time and each have 3 entries here. Several musical icons make their rock rankdown debut including George Harrison, Bob Dylan, and Elton John. The Moody Blues, the Georgia Satellites, and Icehouse will also be making their first appearance in this rankdown.

For some other singer/songwriter's this will be their only rankdown appearance. These include Paul Carrack, Randy Newman, John Kilzer, Robin Trower, John Hiatt, and Mike Oldfield. On the other hand, this will be the end of an era for a couple of other artists that we've become quite acquainted to over the past few rankdown years. This will be the final rock chart rankdown for Guns N' Roses and Melissa Etheridge. Which of the 100 songs on this year's list will come out on top? That's for you to decide as your rankings will determine each song's fate. Have fun and happy ranking!

This top 100 is a big let down. I always thought The mainstream rock chart was more hard rock related. The Rock stations I listened to, and MTV certainly were. If you think this list is good you should see the songs that missed the top 100. Many will be first time listens for me, but I'm definitely doing this rank down....and just so you all know for some mind boggling reason "Welcome To The Jungle" and "Nothing ,But A Good Time" came in below the top 100. Can I get a WTF????

This next extra deserves a post of its own. It's hard to believe that this song wasn't a bigger hit on the rock charts especially considering that it made it all the way to #7 on the Hot 100. At least we did get to rank this song in the 1989 Hot 100 rankdown where it ended up at #23.

Gonna start doing some worthy extras here. I can't believe these certain songs were given the shaft. Also finding a few first time favorites. Thanks for the chart statistics too.

Van Halen - Mine All Mine
While Van Hagar did have a stellar year the chart could have sacrificed one of the other grandpa jams for one more Van Halen jam. Alex especially sounded great on the skins.

Rock City Angels - Deep Inside My Heart
Ever wonder what ZZ Top would look like if they were glam? I barely remembered this one. Never saw the vid and always thought it was George Throrogood. The song kinda sucks but the band looks great.

McAuley Schenker Group - Love Is Not a Game
If you liked Dokken and Scorpions then you liked this band. I liked them all. This is more like European Heavy Metal. Stellar stuff.

John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band - Song & Dance
This band adopted Bruce Springsteen's sound when Bruce lost his spark. Even up to the point of wanting to sound like him vocally. This was a decent first listen worthy of mention.

Judas Priest - Johnny B. Goode
A heavy Metal version of the Chuck Berry classic. Did we really need it? No, but it still rocked.

Iron Maiden - Can I Play with Madness
I would have loved to rank some Iron Maiden in my top 10 here. One of their most melodic. Not what they were known for, but I still really loved this song back in the day. Chorus is worthy to go head to head with White Lion. 

Tesla - Gettin' Better
I didn't get into Tesla until "Love Song". Which is funny because this one sounds really great. I mean really great. You give the vocals to Jani Lane and you have a Warrant song. Download/check. Yes I'm still rediscovering Hair Metal jams all the time.

Robert Plant - The Way I Feel
It be a cold day in hell when I give Robert Plant below 50 rank. Especially for songs on this album.

The Hooters - Karla with a K
hard not to love everything having to do with hooters. Bagpipes, Accordions, and Banjos and they still rocked. Too bad we didn't get to rank this one.

Huey Lewis & The News - Walking with the Kid
Love everything Huey Lewis and The News. This was never a single, but I think it would have done great on pop too? Who else is charting Huey Lewis and The News in 2020? 

Rick Springfield - Rock of Life
Another of my favorite rockers of the 80's. On this song he incorporates a bit of Reggae beat mixed with some Sammy Hagar guitar power. reminds me a bit of "Everybody's Girl" from 'Working Class Dog'. This is a great song. easily one of those songs that would have made my top 20 on this RD that didn't even have to be Hair Metal.

Aerosmith - Rockin' Pneumonia & The Boogie Woogie Flu
Steven Tyler gives the Dad Rock" vibe balls.

Mick Jagger - Say You Will
Another vocalist that with his tones alone can entice me. The songs seems to suite David Bowie more than Mick Jagger, but it is still pretty good.

The Cars - Double Trouble
'Door To Door' was not the best Cars album. The ideas were all over the place ,and the songs sounded like rusted bits and pieces from other songs that never made it onto the previous albums. Even the vocals here sound like Ben Orr doing his best Ric Ocasek impression. This song isn't one of my favorites. Elliot was phoning in the guitars, David was falling asleep on the skins, Ric? Where was Ric? This song didn't sound like it was written by Ric, and yet it was. The only cool vibe I got from this particular song was the haunting synths melos from Greg Hawks. Id have to say I would struggle with a top 50 for this song, but I will make up for it with "You Are The Girl", Coming Up You" and "Strap Me In". Sorry, but even The Cars needed a tune up once in a while.  ;)

Pat Benatar - Don't Walk Away
I think I remember this one getting some play on VH-1. The stand out point for me on this song is obviously her vocals. The song is alright. A tamer sound for her, but It does have a very nice buildup to the chorus.

Crowded House - Never Be the Same
This one from last night's first time listens. Seems the band kept charting songs everywhere else but the U.s way into the 90's. This one was really good. Reminds me of some Cutting Crew song. Good guitar oriented Sophistipop.

Bruce Springsteen - Roulette
This sounds like Springsteen 1980 so I'm definitely liking this one way more than the entries in the top 100 for 1988 Mainstream rock. Interesting way he sings the word Roulette. Not the way one says the word, but works in the chorus.

David Lee Roth - Knucklebones
Another good one off the album. Steve Vai's guitar intro could easily be the stand out of the song. David is sounding a bit more gruff than usual, but how awesome is that solo in the break.

Aerosmith - Magic Touch
this is a great song. I like it cuz the chorus is very Hair Metal with a bit of Danger Danger glam, but for a song titled "Magic Touch" it kinda had everything but. Id still give it a top 50 rank or at least very close to top 50. Here is the real question? Why are we not ranking "Rag Doll"? That one would have been in my top 10.

Michael Bolton - Wait on Love
This is a good song. The style sounds like Lou Gramm's solo material. Great chorus. Undeniably sing along worthy. I was just waiting for the Taylor Dayne guest cameo, but it never came. I have to say that being one of the bigger Michael Bolton fans on PULSE I say this is more applicable to this list than that "Sitting On The Dock of The Bay" cover.

Richard Marx - Endless Summer Nights
This is one of the Richard Marx songs that made it all the way into my personal top 10. This is a perfect summer vibe song. Gotta love those summertime love affairs.

Tonio K - Without Love
Sounds like Tonio listened to a lot of Springsteen when he was younger. It's a good uptempo rocker, but tries to hard to sound like all Bruce's hits put together. Id rather just go listen to Bruce. 

Lita Ford - Kiss Me Deadly
Ending up this set with my favorite song of the bunch and one of my favorite Glam Metal queens of the 80's. Easy top 10 song if it had made this top 100. Pure Glam Metal fire lyrically, and visually. Spandex clad ,belting out the lyrics and swinging her guitar all over the place. It doesn't get better than this. One of those songs I could listen to like 2-3 times in a row before continuing with the Lita Ford playlist. #40 peak on mainstream Rock. Could that chart be more deaf? At least the Hot 100 got it right.

Survivor - Didn't Know It Was Love
Survivor was one of the first casualties on AOR rock on the rock charts. The pop charts would have eaten this one up ion 1985. Uptempo melodic, and it's always great to listen to Jimi Jamison vocals. The song was alright, but it was missing that hook Survivor was known for. This was Karate Kid soundtrack music at best.

Bryan Ferry - Kiss and Tell
This is a great song. Does it belong on mainstream Rock. Not at all. It's great for Modern Rock and Pop. Would I have ranked it higher than most of the Alternative crossovers featured in this RD. Probably so.

The Bangles - Hazy Shade of Winter
I would have loved to rank this one again . Psychedelic Rock sounds right at home on mainstream. Probably would have made my top 10 again just for that riff alone.

The Adventures - Broken Land
More Sophistipop on Mainstream. Would have loved to rank this one on Alternative RD. Has some Simply Red vibes while sounding a lot like Nik Kershaw's "Wouldn't It Be Good" in the chorus. Another one I would have ranked in my top 40 if it had made the top 100.

and even more great sounding Sophistipop I would have rather preferred over some of the "dad Rock featured on the actual RD.

Midnight Oil - Dreamworld
Throughout the years this one has become my preferred Midnight Oil song. I still dig the other big hits, but this one really gets the heart pumping.

Robert Palmer - Early in the Morning
The Gap Band classic goes New Wave. Sounds like really great drifting music for the 80's. Smooth synth melody reminds me of Corey Hart's "Sunglasses At Night". Not as great "Simply Irresistible" , but still top 50 material.

Dokken - Prisoner
saving my favorite song of the night to end this set.. Dokken's Music style  was more Scorpions like Heavy Metal. This is a great song that would have gotten an easy top 20 rank from me. I love the way Don Dokken's vocals would resonate through the speakers. Elektra did the same thing with Vince Neil on their first record. The lyric "Prisoner chained by love" are a homage to their first radio hit "Breaking The Chains".
