This was a strong set of songs, but I’m not surprised by this outcome. I liked everything though so well done guys!
Thanks for having me as a guest judge, Sam! I had a blast! 😄

Considering I had done my own calculations beforehand indicating Highway To Hell would've lost by much more with just the scores of the main judges, I'm more so surprised the bottom 2 ended up so close

ROUND TWELVE - RESULTS
Welcome to the twelfth elimination ceremony! I can't believe we're already closing in to the top 5. This also means we're getting soooo close to the finish line. Tonight one of you will be leaving us while only five of you remain. The guest judges for this round is @humanshazam & Soulsista!
Coming back with another win in their bag, the winner of this round is...{Spoiler}{Spoiler} VIOLET!Earth, Wind, & Fire - "September"How does it feel to be called first again? Congratulations you're one step closer towards winning this season.Sambalada: "Absolutely f**king amazing. It's the one song that everyone would dance to. It's just impossible not to. One of the songs that define what a fun pop song *should* sounds like. The melody is downright catchy. Add the super fun production to it and you get this timeless classic. The vocal performance is great, and I don't know how anyone could get annoyed by it. It's perfect." (9.8)Walt: "Oh, this is just iconic. It’s just such an infectious song that makes me want to get up and dance whenever I listen to it. This song is basically the essence of happiness." (9.3)Gates: "You just can't stay mad when this song comes on--the composition manages to make the even-mannered, room-commanding strut of the performers into an infectiously joyful sound. But the song also has a yearning feeling, hinting that the reason you cherish the memories/your present with such vigor is because happiness is a constant uphill run, and anything could fall apart at a moment's notice because of forces pushing against it. Not only is this reflected in the lyrics, it's reflected in the arrangement, which fills the whole sonic range and, even though the progression seems repetitive on the surface, it offers a new twist on the melodies or beats at every turn. It's all distilled in a "ba-de-ya" refrain that simultaneously means nothing and everything." (8.2)Mayman: "Love this song. It's definitely a classic. That chorus is so rememberable." (9.3)Hamed: "If you don't sing this song on the 21st night of September then you a f**king hoe and deserve to be put down for your sins. Anyways, this is such a iconic fun song that is such an earworm and that chorus and various lines from the verses never escape my mind. This is a song that truly never ages and remains being a bop to this day." (9.7)Nick Perkins: "I like this song a lot, but it also feels like a kinda uninspired pick this late in the competition. I feel like to make the top 5, one should have to send more than like the first google result for funk songs. but then again, I love the song, so I can’t really dock many points haha." (8.2)Shazam: "I have some sentimental reasons for loving this track, but even forgetting that, this track is just loads of fun. The chorus just hits you in the face with pure optimism, always a spirits lifter. Not to mention the members are really tight with their instruments here. The basslines present here are punchy but danceable, and the overall groove tying the band members together is undeniable." (9.3)Soulsista: (9.5)TOTAL: 73.3 | AVERAGE: 9.16The second best is...{Spoiler}{Spoiler} FEARLESS!Stevie Wonder - "Sir Duke"You got TWO perfect scores! Congratulations and keep your eyes on the prize!Sambalada: "I've heard only good things about this album and the singles are all definitely great. "Sir Duke" is all in pure fun. Stevie's vocal delivery is awesome and the instrumentation is perfect. The trumpets are so gorgeous, and everything else also sounds timeless." (8.8)Walt: "Apparently this song was written in the memory of Duke Ellington. Combined with the joyous brass and Stevie’s wonderful delivery, it feels less like a funeral and more like a celebration of life (which is 100% a positive). You can definitely hear the influence from Duke Ellington and other jazz musicians here." (9.1)Gates: "It's hard to put words to a song so flawless, so unbelievably magical and wholesome. It casts an imposing shadow on all songs that tackle the subject of the art form of music itself and why human find it so special. Sir Duke sounds both vintage and modern, reverential and playful, beaming with spontaneity and sunshine but controlled and not sickly sweet in the slightest. The long chutes-and-ladders run after each chorus is one of my single favorite moments in music history." (10)Mayman: "First time I've heard this and I enjoyed it. The instrumental is pretty cool." (8.3)Hamed: "God I love Stevie Wonder, he embodies funk for me and like killed it with this sound. Sir Duke is a fantastic song, Stevie's voice is great, the instrumentation is pleasing to the ears, and the song keeps me entertained and when it ends I want more. The song is also a gorgeous tribute to fellow late soul artists which just makes it even more beautiful." (10)Nick Perkins: "Not one of my favorites from Stevie Wonder but it’s still a very solid song! I enjoy the lyrics about music, which is a concept I’ve always dug in pop music haha. I also think that the instrumental here is quite groovy. I like this one!" (8.6)Shazam: "The common theme this round seems to be "fun, happy songs" and what better song to get that feeling across than Sir Duke? Whenever I hear the horn intro, I get a massive grin because I know I'm about to be happy as hell for the next ~4 minutes. The chorus is just hooky as all get out, and Stevie has this subtle grit in his voice that really knocks this song into higher gear. I also really like hearing the melodic sections move and warp with the beat of the song, going through ups and downs as the track progresses. Hard to go wrong with a cut from Songs in the Key of Life, but still an excellent pick." (9.2)Soulsista: (8.5)TOTAL: 72.5 | AVERAGE: 9.06Next...{Spoiler}{Spoiler} MATT!Curtis Mayfield - "Move On Up"Sambalada: "Way too short! The percussion really builds the atmosphere of the song, and Curtis sounds flawless with no restrictions. The part where there's a trumpet playing after every time he said something is so gorgeous. The extended version really makes those beautiful aspects shine even more." (9.0)Walt: "I adore how lush the instrumentation is here with the richness of the trumpets and the percussion line (I think it’s a bongo?). It’s just such a groovy song." (8.9)Gates: "An endless, purposeful jam. It's self-evident how killer the brass section is--they're like blasts of pure invigoration. Curtis' voice was adaptable to many modes, but I think he was most in his element on these uplifting type of songs (with a hint of social consciousness; always present in his work even when it's more subtle), and every time they hit the refrain, you just want to shout it along with him. The drummer puts up a total masterclass here--keeping up the fast tempo and consistently making sure the rhythm stays fresh. And let's not leave out the fluttery, persistent guitar/bass lying right into the groove. This song feels like riding your bike around the lake at the park on a perfect spring day." (9.3)Mayman: "This is alright. Never heard it before but it's not bad. I prefer the original version to the extended version. Neither one I enjoyed too much." (6.8)Hamed: "This sounds familiar but I don't think I have ever listened to this, not in full at least. I like the empowerment message in the lyrics, Curtis' s voice is great, and the production is groovy funk goodness. Pretty good discovery from this, I like it." (8.3)Nick Perkins: "I dig the groove here. the instrumental overall hits a really solid sweet spot, I’m a fan! I also think that Curtis Mayfield works very well here, especially how he sings the title line in falsetto. just some nice little attention to detail there." (8.9)Shazam: "When I saw the theme, I was reeaaally hoping this would be picked, and no surprise someone picked it! Almost 9 minutes of pure ecstasy that uplifts me in any mood. Curtis' vocals are on point, the drumming is groovy as hell and thriving with energy, and that main horn motif is just irresistible. If you're not listening to the extended version, you're missing out (anyone who knows me knows i'm a sucker for lengthy, extended instrumental jams, and this track goes above and beyond with that). To me, this is pretty much the pinnacle of funk, soul, and positive energy, perfect track right here." (10)Soulsista: (8.0)TOTAL: 69.2 | AVERAGE: 8.65The last person to escape the bottom two is...{Spoiler}{Spoiler} SLIPPERY!Rick James - "Super Freak"Sambalada: "The most iconic song from the funk era if you ask me. The bass line is iconic on a league on its own. The song got me pumped up all the way throughout. This is the REAL 7 minutes of fun. Even Rick James' "freak"-y performance is great. I absolutely love the multiple times he does those acrobatic vocals, that if done by other artist on a different song would be unpleasant. Every music instruments are flawless; the tambourine, saxophone, electric guitars. It's one of the greatest musical piece of all time period that many artists tried to take a sample of it." (9.7)Walt: "I love the inflictions Rick James puts in his voice here, it makes the song just the right amount of sleazy without coming across as super gross haha. The production is also great, it’s really catchy while also being really tight. I wish this was remembered more today than being the song that “U Can’t Touch This” samples." (8.8)Gates: "I don't think James would've been able to make his filthiness resonate if he didn't have such great control vocally. The range of inflections--everything from sly and winking to wild and woolly--and notes he hits is outrageous (the back-up singers are no slouches either). The sound of the is band altogether is so airtight and punchy, and the players are in lockstep with each other, taking a simple composition and making it fiery and action-packed the whole way through (all capping off with that gloriously goofy sax solo)." (8.5)Mayman: "Enjoyable, although not super good. The length doesn't work much here." (7.2)Hamed: "It has been sooooo long since I've listened to Super Freak and I still love it lol, it's campy fun and that melody is iconic. That sax is a great addition, I love the instrumentation throughout the song but it goes on for a little too long for my liking. The only ehhhh thing about the song is that Rick James is infamous for multiple cases of sexual assault on women but I usually separate music from the person, the dude was a super freak irl ironically enough." (8.4)Nick Perkins: "This is a jam! The baseline is pretty iconic, and Rick James has some pretty great vocals on the track. I also think that the song makes the most of it’s 7 minute runtime, which is most appreciated haha. Don’t really have a ton to say about this one, it’s just a great and classic track." (9.0)Shazam: "Possibly the most "in your face" track of the set. Everyone knows the instrumental by the sample used by MC Hammer, but in a less jokey song, the instruments really shine and breathe with the rest of the song. Rick's vocals are downright aggressive at times, pairing that with the over the top sexual, not-a-care-in-the-world theme works unexpectedly well. Where this track really shines is the second half though. Each instrument breaks out of its shell and cuts loose, creating an all-night-long jam. Truly more than the sample." (8.1)Soulsista: (9.0)TOTAL: 68.7 | AVERAGE: 8.59Once again barely surviving. You've proved yourself time to time again to be a survivor. Well you make it to the next round, congratulations! Which means the bottom two are...{Spoiler}{Spoiler}
BORN & CHARMANDER
Born, this might be your first trip to this spot but remember that it took you so long to get your ultimate standout moment last round. Charmander, you took off the competition to a great start. Maybe dwindling in the middle but now you return to the bottom of the pack, again.
One of you will be eliminated.

If anyone asks me what my favorite song of all-time is, “Sir Duke” would be my answer - I remember hearing it in music class in elementary school (I was in the US at the time) and loving it. I spent YEARS not knowing what it was called and when I finally found it when I was in high school... that was a moment.
So when I saw that “Sir Duke” qualifies as funk, I knew I had to send it in and hope that it wasn’t taken!
I feel like a 10 from gates is an accomplishment in and of itself so there’s that too, haha.

The last person to advance to the next round is...{Spoiler}{Spoiler} CHARMANDER!Michael Jackson - "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'"Sambalada: "This is an era like no other. The hook in this song is unbelievable, and Michael used his vocal ability to make the hook even more memorable. The production is groovy and fun. The synthesizers totally steal the show. The part "Don't Stop Da Music" sampled towards the end is isonic." (8.3)Walt: "The production here is really great - blending elements of 80’s synth-funk with African-inspired rhythms which make for a really enjoyable groove. After looking at the lyrics, they’re actually pretty angry. Michael’s delivery gets across the anger pretty well while not compromising the danceability of the song." (8.6)Gates: "This is still one of my favorite MJ tracks, though I've mellowed on it a bit as compared to the past. The busyness and frenetic energy of the instrumentation is what makes this stand out the most. The production blends mutant-disco, r&b, and Afrobeat elements with relative ease, and the rhythm is so insistent that you can't help but move your feet to it. Michael is mostly able to keep up with his voice, and his frustrated, combative tone, while not super-convincing on its own, fits the atmosphere of the song well throughout." (8.4)Mayman: "Definitely one of my favorite Michael songs. The length works well here and makes it enjoyable. Love the outro too." (9.5)Hamed: "An MJ classic, it's such an upbeat fun track that is groovy from start to finish. And who doesn't love that outro. The only part that always felt a bit weird to me though was that vegetable bridge, it takes me out of the song for a good minute. It's not my favorite from MJ but it's a loveable fun classic that is funky fun always." (8.6)Nick Perkins: "I dig this one. It’s got a nice tight groove, and Michael Jackson controls the song very well. I’m not the biggest fan of the backing vocals, but aside from those this is a very strong pick!" (8.4)Shazam: "Was wondering if MJ would show up here, and what a track to appear with! Maybe not the biggest single on Thriller, but definitely not one to overlook. I'm a big fan of the warm synths shrouding the entire song, and the trumpet lines are infectious. MJ of course kills it on vocals here, like always. The Makossa bits here definitely set this song apart too, just a fun, fun track. Also shoutout to that wonky guitar riff in the middle of the track, that part rips." (8.4)Soulsista: (8.0)TOTAL: 68.2 | AVERAGE: 8.53
And you're still a survivor. This is a great song but maybe not as fresh as others in the ears of the judges. Still you make I to the next round, congratulations!Which means...
{Spoiler}{Spoiler} BORN,I'm sorry but you've been eliminated.Janelle Monáe - "Make Me Feel"Sambalada: "The lone song from this century in this set, lol. And what a great representation! The Prince-esque bassline is infectious and the production on pre-chorus is a highlight, and damn the bridge is amazing. Literally every part of the song is strong." (8.5)Walt: "This was my jam back in 2018 and it’s still a jam today. The instrumentation here is so funky and fun, apparently Prince was involved behind the scenes before his passing and you can tell. Janelle’s vocals here are also both sultry and infectious and they really elevate the song for me." (9.0)Gates: "The obvious point of comparison is a song we rated earlier in the game--Prince's "Kiss"--but I think Janelle uses the advancements in production technology in the succeeding 30 years to her advantage and recorded something I actually prefer to "Kiss". The instruments/electronics all sound quite clear, and goes from steely to bubblegum-y, reserved to explosive, viscous to springy in an instant. And Monaé sounds delighted to just glide over the pulse, not afraid to get dirty and weird, portraying herself as coolly confident in her sensuality, but not immune to bursts of emotion." (8.0)Mayman: "I do enjoy this one. The whispery vocals in the first part of the song along with the production is really cool." (8.2)Hamed: "I looooove Janelle to death and this song is great, I agree with disassociative that I think Janelle takes the best parts of Prince's Kiss and modernizes it really well to where I prefer this to Kiss actually, though Kiss is already a great song. It's far from my favorite from Janelle but it's still an amazing song and I love it. I'm still mad it got robbed on all the charts, an unforgivable mess." (9.6)Nick Perkins: "The beat on this song is very cool, and the guitar stings work quite well. My only real issue with it is that it’s kinda a boring pick - like I get going for Janelle, but maybe this late in the game going with one of her lesser known songs would’ve been a better choice." (8.0)Shazam: "I was really curious to see the split between classic funk and nu-school/synthy funk, and I figured this would be THE track to pick if you're choosing the latter. I'm definitely a big fan of the production on this song, the synth glisten as each chord stabs out among the mix. Janelle is also really on-point with her vocals, although I do think the melodic choices have never sat with me too too well (that's mainly a nitpick though). Janelle wears her Prince influence on her sleeve, and this is definitely a fun jam and a nice modern twist on the classic funk sound." (7.9)Soulsista: (8.0)TOTAL: 67.2 | AVERAGE: 8.4 That's unfortunate. This is a good song but maybe too weak against other classic stuffs in this round. I'm sorry to see you go, thank you for participating! :'( However... {Spoiler}{Spoiler}
This is another pre-determined non-elimination round.
That's right, Born. You still have another chance to redeem yourself next round. But like Slippery did earlier in the season, you will receive a penalty. For every scores the judges give you, your scores will be deduced by .3 points. Congratulations you're still in the running towards becoming the last man standing!
