Radio One Takes On WDAS-FM In Philadelphia
The company's long-awaited debut of WPPZ (formerly WSNJ/Bridgeton, NJ) has occurred, as the station becomes "WRNB, 107.9" with an Urban AC format serving the City of Brotherly Love. WPPZ has been dark since February, when the station began preparing its move on the dial from 107.7 MHz and its relocation of WPPZ's city of license from Bridgeton to Pennsauken, NJ. The arrival of an Urban AC format dispels rumors that WPPZ would go Gospel as "Praise," and the use of the "WRNB" slogan means a move of those call letters from Radio One's Urban WRNB/Dayton is in the works. Sources at WPPZ tell R&R the call letters will officially move from Ohio in the coming weeks. It's not known what call letters the Dayton station will take. "WRNB, 107.9" will compete directly with Clear Channel's heritage Urban AC WDAS-FM, which is also the top-rated station in Philadelphia. And with Radio One's purchase of a majority stake in Reach Media, rumors are already swirling that the Reach-syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show could eventually move from WDAS-FM to its new Philadelphia competitor. Radio One execs were mum on such a move when asked about the situation by R&R. With WPPZ's debut, an eight-watt class D translator for Mercer County Community College's WWFM/Trenton, NJ and the 14-watt class D transmitter for Havertown High School's WHHS/Havertown, PA were both silenced.
From me: Radio One currently isn't doing well in Philadelphia, with CHR-Rhythmic WPHI behind Urban WUSL and CHR-Rhythmic WRDW, and Alternative WPLY behind Active Rock WYSP and Rock WMMR. WDAS-FM is Number 1 in Philadelphia like the article said, and has the highest 12+ rating of any station in a top ten market.
