"Not Ready To Make Nice" is the absolute deserving winner of this. What they went through is so ridiculous, plus them coming back with the album that they did.

Pleasantly surprised to see three songs by a male artist make it into the top five which in most country rankdowns is incredibly rare. I’m personally rooting for either Tracy’s “If I Don’t Make It Back” or The Chicks’ “Not Ready to Make Nice”!

#5. Mark Chesnutt - "A Hard Secret to Keep"
Total Points: 403 Average: 31.0 Year Released: April, 2005 Mediabase Peak: #49 Billboard Peak: #59 Rankings:LBTrocks - 2 tim - 5 recordyear - 6 bboat11 - 11 gardyfan - 13 Cody Wants Out... - 16 sabre14 - 19 .indulgecountry - 29 someguy - 29 castleoblivion26 - 51 kw9461 - 72 Kanenrá:ke - 74 gonecountry - 76 Following: bigfan101"A Hard Secret to Keep" was released as the third and final single off Mark Chesnutt's Savin' the Honky Tonk album in April of 2005. It peaked at #49 on Mediabase in late May, but held on to the chart through most of June. The song was written by Jim McBride and Jerry Salley. The song was also included on Mark's next album and last for Vivation! Records, Heard It In a Love Song.
One of my favorite Chesnutt songs. It's so straight forward and honest, that it makes you listen on the first try. Great instrumentation, too. Mark was finally free of any corporate label and was allowed to make his music as traditional as he liked. This album was certainly that.

Perfect ranking! Glad to see one of Mark's songs make it into the top five here as "A Hard Secret to Keep" has always been a favorite of mine from 2005.

#4. Dixie Chicks - "Not Ready to Make Nice"
Total Points: 366 Average: 28.1 Year Released: March, 2006 Mediabase Peak: #38 Billboard Peak: #36 Rankings:.indulgecountry - 1 castleoblivion26 - 2 someguy - 2 bboat11 - 5 Cody Wants Out... - 5 tim - 6 recordyear - 13 Kanenrá:ke - 14 gonecountry - 34 gardyfan - 35 LBTrocks - 67 kw9461 - 85 sabre14 - 97 Following: bigfan101"Not Ready to Make Nice" was released as the first single off the Dixie Chicks' (now known as the Chicks) Taking the Long Way album in March of 2006. It peaked at #36 on Billboard, which was its debut. but held on to the chart through most of May. The song was written by Natalie Maines, Emily Strayer (former Emily Robison), Martie McGuire and Dan Wilson. The song also peaked inside the top 30 on the pop chart and received airplay on the AC chart.
I know I'm in the vast minority here but musically, "Not Ready to Make Nice" isn't very interesting to me. I think what happened to them sucks and is obviously wrong (personally, I don't care what an artist's political opinion is) but "Not Ready to Make Nice" was never close to a favorite of mine by them. I appreciate the passion and writing from the heart, however, which is why it escaped my 100's. I get why many people love it.
Not surprised it made the top 5.

Even though a handful of us were likely pulling for this one, I had a gut feeling that "Not Ready to Make Nice" might peter out in the top five as I expected it to have some detractors.
I'm quite shocked with the top three especially considering two of the songs are by Tracy Lawrence!

Even though Taking the Long Way is a quite overrated album (It is their worst major label album imo), Not Ready to Make Nice is still a highlight of the album because of the attitude.

#3. Tracy Lawrence - "If I Don't Make It Back"
Total Points: 330 Average: 25.3 Year Released: November, 2005 Mediabase Peak: #40 Billboard Peak: #42 Rankings:bboat11 - 1 kw9461 - 1 sabre14 - 1 tim - 1 Kanenrá:ke - 2 Cody Wants Out... - 9 castleoblivion26 - 10 .indulgecountry - 18 recordyear - 33 LBTrocks - 50 gonecountry - 58 gardyfan - 60 someguy - 86 Following: bigfan101 "If I Don't Make It Back" was released as the second and final single off Tracy Lawrence's greatest hits album, Then & Now: The Hits Collection. It hit radio in early November of 2005 and peaked at #40 on Mediabase in late January of 2006, although it stayed on the chart til February. The song was written by Brett Jones and Bobby Pinson. The single was also Tracy's last for Mercury Nashville and Universal. He would start his own record company, Rocky Comfort in 2006.
This is one of my favorite country songs of the 2000's. I ranked it at #1 in a rankdown like this, which is a huge statement lol. The song itself is fabulous. The lyrics tell such a great story, and the last part of the song is so well-written -- "well, Miller Lite ain't my brand, but I drink one every now and then, in his honor." You're hoping Jimmy makes it back but you get the feeling it didn't happen when you hear that part for the first time. Awesome instrumentation and melody, too. Tracy said he thought it was going to be a huge hit but his days at Universal were clearly over and radio never took to it. This needs to be recorded again by a big-name artist.
I'm betting people are surprised this and "Not Ready to Make Nice" missed the top 2 lol.

Wrong Tracy song out first. In fact the rollout of this top five is turning out to be a mess.

#2. Terri Clark - "Damn Right"
Total Points: 321 Average: 24.6 Year Released: February, 2006 Mediabase Peak: #57 Billboard Peak: Did Not Chart Rankings:bboat11 - 4 .indulgecountry - 5 someguy - 6 recordyear - 7 Kanenrá:ke - 8 LBTrocks - 12 Cody Wants Out... - 15 castleoblivion26 - 23 gardyfan - 25 tim - 30 gonecountry - 46 kw9461 - 61 sabre14 - 79 Following: bigfan101"Damn Right" was released as the second and final U.S. single off Terri Clark's Life Goes On album in early February of 2006. It peaked at #57 on Mediabase the first week of March. The song never reached the top 60 on Billboard. It was written by Craig Wiseman and Julian Gallagher. The last Canadian single was "Slow News Day."
This one was promoted by Mercury Nashville but it only lasted a month at country radio -- reached 24 monitored stations on Mediabase, which is probably the equivalent to 40-45 stations on today's panel.
I really enjoy "Damn Right" but too much competition in the rankdown put it down my list and honestly, I knew this one would make the top 10-15 cause Terri is well liked here, but I'm slightly susprised this one is #2. It's a fun song but far from her best, imo. "She Didn't Have Time", the previous single, is my favorite Terri Clark song.

#1. Tracy Lawrence - "Used to the Pain"
Total Points: 319 Average: 24.5 Year Released: June, 2005 Mediabase Peak: #32 Billboard Peak: #35 Rankings:gardyfan - 4 bboat11 - 6 Kanenrá:ke - 6 sabre14 - 11 castleoblivion26 - 13 tim - 16 Cody Wants Out... - 18 gonecountry - 23 kw9461 - 33 .indulgecountry - 36 LBTrocks - 40 someguy - 42 recordyear - 71 Following: bigfan101"Used to the Pain" was released as the first new single off Tracy's Lawrence's Then & Now: The Hits Collection in June of 2005. It peaked at #32 on Mediabase in September. The song was written by Mark Nesler and Tony Martin. Nesler actually released the song as his debut single in 1998, which some people might not be aware of. Nesler's version got to #36 on R&R and #47 on Billboard.
Truth be told, this is my second-favorite Tracy Lawrence single lol. It's not as good as "If I Don't Make It Back" but I remember being super impressed by the two new singles off this Greatest Hits album, and was so disappointed when neither could even make it to the top 30. "Used to the Pain" is very well-written and is such a clever way to write a common subject in country music, with a fantastic hook.
I'm shocked this won, though. I thought maybe top 15-20. I knew there wouldn't be any tankers though, and as proof by the top two, that is huge when it comes to winning these. The point totals were so close. Just 11 points separated the top 3 and just two points separated the top 2. A true photo-finish.
Thanks for letting me do this, as is it was a different kind of year-end rankdown. Hope you guys had fun. :)

I love both of these songs so I am happy to see them be the top 2.
The first time I heard the song "Used to the Pain" was from Mark Nesler:
I actually bought that album for the song "Slow Down". When I heard Tracy's version I loved it cause his voice just works so well on this song!

#3. Tracy Lawrence - "If I Don't Make It Back"Rankings:someguy - 86 Really?!? That was a great top five but I'm still scratching my head at the overall outcome, though. It's disappointing that "If I Don't Make It Back" didn't win because it ended having four top rankings while the top two didn't have anything higher than a #4 ranking and everyone put it in their top 60, except for one lone participant! And considering how close the point spread was makes it an even harder pill to swallow because I have doubt that in a BotB Rankdown "Used to the Pain" would not come out ahead of "If I Don't Make It Back". As someone who was in the Army around about the time this song was released it has a very special meaning to me and I was just as disappointed back then to see his label and country radio not push this one more. Anyways...thanks for hosting this, sabre14 ! I had meant to comment more along the way but ended up getting behind at one point and just couldn't find enough time to catch up. There were a handful of great discoveries as well as some re-discoveries that I hadn't heard in a long time.

Well this outcome kinda sucks. UTTP is a solid song, but the other 4 in the top 5 were all much better. :/ Also it's pretty wtf-worthy that it beat Tracy's other song here that everyone always raves about (which even had four #1s), lol.

Damn Used to the Pain is not as traditional as A Hard Secret to Keep, not as catchy as Damn Right, does not have a story as good as If I Don't Make It Back, not as punching as Not Ready to Make Nice, and it won only because no one tanks it... Thanks for hosting the rankdown though sabre14

Not at all how I expected this to play out. A couple of things to catch up on. "Not Ready To Make Nice" is a good song, but I never found it that interesting beyond the sentiment. Plus it seemed like radio was relatively excited for their return - and that song quickly harpooned any chance they had at future radio success. Not surprised it did well here, but quite glad it didn't finish top 3. So bummed that "If I Don't Make It Back" came so close only to just miss out on the top 2. Such an amazing song, one of Tracy's very best and he's had quite a few goods ones. I still remember the first time I heard it on the radio and being just gutted by the final chorus. Not surprised that Terri Clark did so well, she's a Pulse favorite and "Damn Right" is a good song. For some reason I had absolutely no recollection of it from back then, but every time I did my list I kept moving it up. "Used To The Pain" is such a bizarre winner, but can't say I'm too disappointed. Tracy's post-2000 career is all over the place chart wise, but he's consistently put out really good music, even after leaving the major labels. I'd love to see an artist rankdown for Tracy, might even do it myself if no one else has plans for it. Thanks to sabre14 for hosting. This was super fun, so many great songs from this era.

Absolutely weird winner haha But I do adore the song, just really really didn't expect it! Some quick comments since I finally caught up. The top 10 was great, a few that I had ranked lower but nothing I was mad about making it that high. Very impressed with Randy Rogers Band making the top 10! bboat11 Why the low ranking for "Back Of The Bottom Drawer"? I thought that'd be up high for you, kinda surprised me there. Rebecca's 2 singles are amazing and love that it was the debut of Brandy Clark as a songwriter! I was hoping for more from Amber Dotson's "I'll Try Anything" I always thought she nailed that song! Jedd Hughes is one of my favorite flop artist ever. His voice, his songwritiing, and his amazing guitar work! Plus I always thought he was hot so bonus haha Loved getting to meet him and geek out about his debut album! I reccommend very very highly seeking out Susan Haynes and Jedd's debut albums, fantastic albums that showed so much potential! And for my #1 "Wake Up Older" is phenomenal, her vocal kills me every time. The writing is top notch, the melody is fantastic. I just can never get enough of it! Thank you sabre14 for hosting this! I have a playlist saved on my computer and I regularly put it on shuffle!
