Lol HOW? This should've totally ran away with this one. It wasn't my #1 but I thought for sure it'd be the winner, how can anybody put this outside the top 20!! Anyway both remaining songs are great but definitely pulling for "On Your Way Home"! I think it won't win but there's always hope!

Sorry to disappear; I had to run to Papa Murphys and obtain some dinner ![:smokingdiva:](http://i.imgur.com/t6wcd.jpg) Just got home, so let's catch up on this while it's cooking!! "Cry On The Shoulder Of The Road" exceeded all my expectations here, tbh. It is amazing, but it is also a very unusual song for Martina, so I am never sure how Pulse is going to feel about it when it starts to face really stiff competition. But honestly, there is just a real grit to Martina's voice on the Wild Angels album that didn't show up for any other album for some reason, and this song is a perfect example of that. Especially when her voice goes a little raspy on the "steel guitar on the radio" line ![](http://i.imgur.com/2smy76v.gif) I LOVE the rare occasions where her voice does that! Not at all disappointed to see Trisha miss out on the top 5. "XXXs and OOOs" is one of my favorites from her, but it is also so insanely overplayed that I almost never feel like rooting for it when it is against such a strong group of songs. Pleasantly surprised to see "We Danced Anyway" only make it to #5!! I know people love this one, but to me it has always felt like an incomplete song for whatever reason. This is probably the highest I have ever ranked it though, because it has been growing on me as it has shown up in more rankdowns through the years! Woooooow, "Wild Angels" got done dirty!!!!! Still, not a bad finish for Martina! After winning the Gretchen Peters rankdown as well as getting multiple songs in the top 5/top 10, it is neat to see that her songs represent the best of Matraca's catalog just like they did for Gretchen. "Wild Angels" is one of those all-time classics that really helps define mid-'90s country, and is extra special considering that it was her very first #1. Stay tuned to see how well it manages to do once again in the very near future with Martina's singles rankdown redo!!! ![](http://ruadventures.com/forum/Smileys/animated/popcorn.gif)

"I heard you slippin' down the hall: Tell me, did your shadow trip and' fall, Over you, babe, movin' that slowly? Did you think you could waste my time, Come a-messin' round with my mind? Did you think you could? You don't know me.
Where'd you get that alibi? Did it fall out of a midnight sky, Or did you find it on the side of the road? Tell me: Did you have to make a deal, Or wrestle for control, of the wheel, from your conscience? I'd like to know, Where do you go, On your way home?
You know, someday, I'd like to fly, Like a bat outta Nashville. Why don't you help me? An' tell me the truth. 'Cause the truth is gonna set you free. If you keep on lying' to me, I might stay right here, Just to spite you."#2 ~ "On Your Way Home" by Patty LovelessPoints: 73 Average: 8.11 Standard Dev: 4.95Writers: Matraca Berg, Ronnie Samoset Kanenrá:ke ~ 1 .indulgecountry ~ 3 taylor ~ 4 castleoblivion26 ~ 6 tim ~ 7 austin ~ 10 bboat11 ~ 12 someguy ~ 13 BackwoodsBarbie ~ 17 ![](https://i.imgur.com/QbMDQI1.png)

"The car is running' and your bags are packed I guess that says it all Your head is hanging' and you look real sad Maybe you should've called You say you think you need a brand-new start You're really sorry that you broke my heart Well, I'm not really falling' apart, but baby
You can feel bad if it makes you feel better Picture me cryin' reading all your love letters Walking' around in your old sweaters, baby You can feel bad if it makes you feel better
Maybe I'll go out tonight, yeah, I'll paint the town And maybe I'll run into you, while I'm runnin' 'round There's a good chance I'll be alone An even better one that you won't And when it's time for me to go home, baby"#1 ~ "You Can Feel Bad" by Patty LovelessPoints: 56 Average: 6.22 Standard Dev: 4.08Writers: Matraca Berg, Tim Krekel tim ~ 2 bboat11 ~ 2 castleoblivion26 ~ 3 austin ~ 3 BackwoodsBarbie ~ 5 someguy ~ 7 .indulgecountry ~ 9 Kanenrá:ke ~ 11 taylor ~ 14 ![](https://i.imgur.com/QbMDQI1.png) Patty Loveless Live:

Hmmm, I'm thinking "On Your Way Home" just because that feels like a song that austin would randomly hate. Nope I LOVE it

Great winner I will always love the melody the most from "You Can Feel Bad" it's just so catchy! For "On Your Way Home" the lyric "If you keep on lyin' to me, I might stay right here just to spite you" is so amazing. Having been in a relationship like the one in the song this line truly captures just how toxic it can be. Thank you for hosting castleoblivion26 can't wait for the next one! :)

I didn't comment on the finale!! "You Can Feel Bad" was one of my immediate standout discoveries when we did Patty's rankdown, and it still stands out as one of my favorite rankdown discoveries of all time to this day. This song has such a brilliant melody and lyrical hook, the whole thing is just such a perfect ear worm. It is so nice to see it FINALLY join the list of rankdown winners!!!!! (I could have sworn it had won a rankdown already, but I guess it was just me anticipating its victory in the album rankdown that hasn't actually happened yet) "On Your Way Home" is an amazing song as well, and one that I also fully expect to join the hall of rankdown winners when we get to its album rankdown. Her vocal is chilling, and like Jordan said the lyrics are also superb. I never pegged this for a top 5 contender, so to see it come so close to winning is a very pleasant surprise!!! Thanks for hosting castleoblivion26 :) This series is pretty fun!

We also wouldn't have Martina's "Wrong Baby Wrong", Tim's "Felt Good On My Lips"... What other big hits would be left off? I can't think of any right now, lol.

I say we keep the big hits in, no matter if they've already won one rankdown or ten of them. It wouldn't feel like an all-encompassing showcase of the songwriter's catalog if we were to exclude big hits just because they're favorites on Pulse, and I assume that's what this series is supposed to be--a showcase of the songwriter's career and the songs they've gained huge recognition for. And as already noted--a number of great songs would be left on the table if we were to do this, which would more than likely deter those who only know those bigger hits from doing these songwriter rankdowns. Just my two cents, but I know if Matraca's greatest hits had been left out I might not have had any interest in the rankdown.
Maybe (and I don't know if this is already in place or not) there could be a bit of a compromise where there's a few big hits and a few deep cuts to try and balance it out? Particularly if there's many songs from one artist that the writer is credited for.

Maybe (and I don't know if this is already in place or not) there could be a bit of a compromise where there's a few big hits and a few deep cuts to try and balance it out? Particularly if there's many songs from one artist that the writer is credited for. You summed up my thoughts perfectly. The way I see it, while it makes sense to avoid putting obvious winners in certain types of rankdowns, it does not make sense to take them out of others. Artist rankdowns, year-end rankdowns, album rankdowns, etc. pretty much have to stick to a specific set of songs, whether there are obvious winners or not. So imo the debate here comes from whether these songwriter rankdowns are considered more like an artist rankdown, or more like a personal rankdown. I tend to think of them more like an artist rankdown. The writer may not sing all the songs, but they are still songs that defined and shaped their career. Like, imagine leaving "Independence Day" out of the Gretchen Peters rankdown just because it was the obvious winner. It was also the most correct winner because of the impact it has had on Gretchen's legacy and career! Is the purpose of these rankdowns to honor the songs that made these songwriters famous, or to honor their lesser-known contributions? Personally, while I do like discovering lesser-known stuff, I think it would be an incomplete picture to not honor the songs that made these writers famous as well. Especially because, as we discovered in the Matraca rankdown, even with obvious winners in the mix, you can still end up with a fairly surprising finish!! (Still geeking out about Patty vs Patty in the top 2 over more consistent favorites like "Strawberry Wine" and "Wild Angels"!!) But castleoblivion26 this is still your series, and if you want to go more in the direction of cutting big hits, I will still eagerly participate! Just putting in my 2 cents :)

Sorry that I missed the poll, but I also would have voted to keep the big hits in. They are a huge part of the songwriter's catalogue, just as they are a singer's. Thanks for hosting castleoblivion26. Matraca is one of my favourite songwriters of all time, and it was great to revisit some of her biggest hits and deep cuts.
