Good riddance to that oversung mess. I only sat through it in full so I could see just how off the rails it would go. Never cared for it, in any version. Ready for the inevitable Sexual Healing #1 and pleasantly surprised Love Come Down is still in.

Another perfect ranking yes! The remaining 4 are all in my Top 10 so whoever wins I'll be fine with although it would be nice for my #1 to win.

Boooooooooooooo! That Girl is everything!
Jump to It is such an underrated classic. Loved Katharine McPhee's sample of it a few years ago as well.

Today's extra was one of her 18 Top 10 hits on the soul chart. Written and produced by Michael Jackson, it spent 5 weeks at #4 on the soul chart and 6 weeks at #10 on the Hot 100.

Welcome back! Well, another rankdown, another tie: the next 2 songs have the same number of points. One has more #1 rankings, so it'll be ranked higher. Up first, someone will lose their #1...and the final #13 ranking goes down.

The top two will be revealed shortly!
But first, an extra. This song was in its initial run on the charts, climbing to #4 on the soul chart and staying there for 4 weeks. It was a different story on the Hot 100, as it didn't get any higher than #44. It got a new lease on life a few months later and eventually made its way to #12 on the Hot 100.

Here we are, the final two...they're separated by just 9 points! 2. I Can't Go For That (No Can Do) - Hall & OatesHall & Oates had a number of songs hit the soul chart, and this was the most successful. A million-selling single, its bass line inspired that of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean". It was sampled in Simply Red's 2003 song "Sunrise". Stats:Chart Entry: November 28, 1981 Peak Date: January 30, 1982 Weeks At #1: 1 Weeks In Top 10: 8 Weeks On Chart: 17 Hot 100 Peak: #1 (1 week) Points: 203 Average: 4.33singingrulebritannia - 1 rowellfarm490 - 1 Red - 1 annoymous1 - 1 newpower - 1 Mirago - 2SHOOTER - 2@slipperyslope - 2stallie - 2B-Boy - 3 Juanca - 4 @antigonerising - 4 craziaskowboi - 6 Ivy Leegue™ - 6 🇯🇲 dollybaby 🇯🇲 - 6 Soulsista - 7 #LisaRinna - 7 wyckyd - 7 jtd Thee Stallion - 8 gonecountry - 9 .indulgecountry - 11
And here's the other song that everyone ranked in their Top 10...congrats to Mirago and @slipperyslope for scoring a perfect Top 2! 1. Sexual Healing - Marvin GayeIt only took this song 4 weeks to reach the top of the soul chart. Marvin's first single after leaving Motown was his last major hit, one of the longest-running soul #1s at that time, and reaching the Top 5 on the Hot 100. A platinum-selling single, Billboard named it the top soul song for 1983. It's been covered numerous times since its release. Stats:Chart Entry: October 16, 1982 Peak Date: November 6, 1982 Weeks At #1: 10 Weeks In Top 10: 16 Weeks On Chart: 27 Hot 100 Peak: #3 Points: 212 Average: 3.90Mirago - 1#LisaRinna - 1Ivy Leegue™ - 1Juanca - 1@slipperyslope - 1jtd Thee Stallion - 1wyckyd - 2 @antigonerising - 2 annoymous1 - 2 🇯🇲 dollybaby 🇯🇲 - 4 B-Boy - 4 Soulsista - 5 rowellfarm490 - 5 Red - 5 newpower - 5 .indulgecountry - 5 singingrulebritannia - 6 SHOOTER - 6 gonecountry - 7 stallie - 8 craziaskowboi - 10 And that concludes the Billboard #1 Soul Songs Of 1982 Rankdown. Thanks so much to everyone who participated. Next stop: 1983!

10. Dance floor (9): This was a nice forward-looking dance, synth tune. Production was ace, and something I can see Daft Punk being inspired by. 9. And I’m telling you (3): as I said before, I’m not the biggest fan of this type of music, but I can’t fail to appreciate this classic gem. She SANG. I feel her completely. And although at the end of the song she goes a bit off the rails, it kinda makes sense in the context of the song —at least it’s not that random mess of melisma that Mariah and Luther did butchering Endless Love 8. Turn your love around (12): not a bad song, just a bit underwhelming and badly aged to me. 7. Jump to it (11): a discovery. It started promising with the sound and production, but the chorus didn’t live up to expectations melody was a bit lazy and repetitive to me. 6. That girl (8): good but not my in my top 5 SW songs. Nice and smooth but I like the melody of other songs better.

There's no reason whatsoever why the Dimples song had to be that long. None.
I expected "Dance Floor" to make my top five. This is my way of saying that the top five here was pretty stacked.
Jennifer Holliday nearly wound up in my bottom three, which I cannot say I was expecting going in at all. I'm not sure which version I prefer between the Jennifers, tbh.
I'd argue that "Jump To It" is Aretha's best 80's song. Meanwhile, "That Girl" is one of the better Stevie songs from the 80's.
No real surprise that "Early in the Morning" is out before the top four. Even though it's not "You Dropped a Bomb on Me", it's still The Gap Band, so it's still great.
"Let It Whip" is just funk greatness all the way around. That bass is phenomenal.
I don't know what I was expecting with "Love Comes Down", but I sure as hell was not expecting that. I didn't have a lot of discoveries in this rankdown, but this was definitely the best of the bunch.
Before I looked at the top two (hell, before I even started looking at the reveals), I assumed that Marvin would win, though I also expected "Love Comes Down" to be #2 and H&O to get tanked a little more here. I was proven correct about Marvin winning, even if (sacrilegious alert) "Sexual Healing" really isn't close to being one of Marvin's best. Having said that, I am glad that "I Can't Go for That" made it this high in a rankdown where it's kind of, sort of out of place. Subjectively, "Out of Touch" is pretty much the H&O song...but objectively, this is probably the peak of their creative powers.
1983 is killer. There's also a pretty clear last place that I am almost positive won't be last in the RD.

5. Early in the morning (2): another forward looking song that wouldn’t feel out of place in the 90s or 00s. Great production that mixed elements of disco and funk with incoming synth pop sounds. Another great example of the uniqueness of 80s music. Robert Palmer did a pretty good job with his cover, although it didn’t sound as fresh as the original youtu.be/PjFrLlg9nl44. Let it whip (5): for many years I thought this was Earth wind & fire. This tune that was quite popular back home, and I enjoyed it back then and still do. 3. Love come down (7): my second favorite discovery after Call Me. Surprised at how much I liked it. The melody, production, vocals, all sounded great and with a good dose of modernity. 2. I can’t go for that (4): one of my favorite H&O songs, although Out of touch and Maneater are at another level of greatness to me. This is pretty good in terms of mixing multiple genre influences, great instrumental (sax!) and of course vocals. I could’ve ranked it at #2 as I like it that much, but I had to give extra points to other two songs that felt more soul to me. By the way, I also liked Simply Red’s sampling of this song, which became a bit back home in big part thanks to the enormous popularity of ICGFT. youtu.be/PE3g2zeBVQQ1. Sexual healing (1): by far my favorite in this list. I’ve always loved this song. The instrumental and vocals are exquisite, the melody is strong, the lush production makes it all work perfectly. One of my favorite r&b hits of the 80s. Thanks for another great rankdown, soulsista !

Still mad that Evelyn was robbed but at least Marvin won. I'll take it. This whole list was pretty solid imo. I think I only didn't really care for my bottom 2.
