If you are wondering what I did tonight?
55.
Trampolene -
Julian CopeNice first time listen. Vocals were stand out, but I really liked it even more once the chorus rolls around.
54.
If You Were a Priest -
Robyn Hitchcock & The EgyptiansAnother first time listen. This one was less interesting musically, but I still dug the accent in his vocals. Little bit of a younger Bowie in his tones.
53.
Dirty Water -
Rock and Hydehey I didn't know they were from the
Payloas.
Eyes Of A Stranger" is a great song.
Nicolas Cage's favorite song in
'Valley Girl'. This song just didn't have too much excitement in it, and I didn't like the melody during the verses.
52.
La Bamba -
Los LobosWho else thought
Lou Diamond Phillips actually was singing the song? The music video certainly confused me back then and WTF were Los Lobos? It didn't make any difference once I knew the truth. This is still a great cover song.
51.
Spanish Eyes -
U2 This one was pretty good, and truth be told I liked a whole lot more than the song on side A.
50.
Don't Be Scared -
The FixxThe Fixx sounding like
U2. Who asked for this? A very subdued sound for The Fixx that I didn't really care for. It's passable, but Call me back when we rank
"Stand Or Fall", "Saved By Zero".49.
Vanishing Girl -
The Dukes of StratosphearThis was o.k.. I really liked the chorus, but not much more.
48.
Good Times -
Hoodoo GurusThe melody here sounded too silly for me. Almost like "wilderness" music.
47.
We Are What We Are -
The Other Onesway better than that extra I reviewed a few days ago. Good song, but its that chorus that spelled out 80's perfection for me. Also the big 80's production sounds reminded me of
Human League "Human" Did I mention this was one of my favorite First time listens?
46.
Is This Love? -
Alison MoyetSpeaking of the big 80's Synthpop sound. This one could have been an
Erasure production. It hits all the right keys and has pleasant ,and soothing melody with a trip to heaven chorus to boast.
45.
Always the Sun -
The StranglersI was kind of excited to preview a first time listen from this band, but this was a huge let down. It sounded like a bad copy of
Dire Straits. Too bad maybe their next song?
44.
Infected -
The TheThis one was just 80's enough to anchor my top half. The bassline and percussion had some
"Dead Man's Party" hidden in there.
43.
Shock -
The Psychedelic FursThis might have been the last time I charted the Furs until
Love Spit Love surfaced. This had a bit of their 90's style, but the sax kept it in the
"Pretty In Pink" era. At least the right one bows out first.
42.
Room Full of Mirrors -
PretendersSolid cover song. Has all the right guitar ingredients and Chrissie sounds just fine. The only thing was that its not a Pretenders kind of vibe. Still was a good listen.
41.
I Don't Wanna -
The CallThis was kinda dull. His vocals were off, and I don't think I really liked anything as much from this band as much
"When The Walls Come Down". He even sounded a bit like
Benjamin Orr in that song.
l
et's do some extras. really behind here.XTC -
That's Really Super, SupergirlI don't just immidiately accept every XTC song. This one for instance didn't have any real hook to speak of. This melody here for example never really sprouts wings. Nice guitar solo. I will add that.
The Smiths - I
s It Really So Strange?Same with this band. I love me some Morrissey tones, but this song never hits the apex I expected.
World Party -
Private RevolutionGave me
George Harrison vibes. It's ok for a first time listen.
Los Lobos -
Set Me Free (Rosa Lee)I don't think I would have ended up loving
"la Bamba" if it hadn't became a big hit. I just don't find this bands vocals that exciting.
X -
See How We AreI didn't care for this. What the hell happened to this band, and why did they want to sound like
Bruce Springsteen while giving a
John Mellencamp vocal type of delivery?
U2 -
Silver and GoldB-side huh, but What record was this song from, because it shows more balls musically than most songs off "Joshua Tree'. Sounds more like "War" or "Unforgettable Fire" material.
Julian Cope -
Shot DownThis one was alright. Not as upbeat as
"Trampoline", but I did dig the prechorus.
The Go-Betweens -
Cut It OutMy favorite of the Extras so far. This one definitely has groove. and I always say female backups soften the melody just right. His vocals sound a bit like
David Sterry from
Real Life of "Send Me An Angel" fame. The song could have been Real Life from the 90's.
U2 -
Bullet the Blue Sky There are two aspects to this song. One I love and one I just don't agree with. The part I love is surely the ode to
Led Zeppelin guitar works style. I'm talking about how much this song has from
"Whole Lotta Love". The part I didn't care for was that whole spoken deal. I would probably still rank it very high because of the music ,and if I just try to imagine the spoken part as being anode to
Jim Morrison. In closing this song is a little bit
Led Zeppelin ,and little bit
the Doors. An excellent combination of sounds.
The The -
Heartland melody isn't the strong aspect of the song, but I still quite enjoyed this one. Female vocals help a lot too.
The Cult -
Lil' DevilI mean this song comes with
Doc Indie Party Rock tag attached to it. Am I right or am I right?
This is the kind of song that would sound amazing while cruising in your favorite muscle car.
Siouxsie & The Banshees -
Song from the Edge of the WorldI dig almost all 80's material from this band. They are favorites on my side of the border.
INXS & Jimmy Barnes -
Good TimesINXS going down the
John Mellencamp Heartland road. The song is fine, but I enjoyed their own style, which this song has nothing of.
David Bowie -
Time Will CrawlThis is a much better song to rank. Just the intro alone gives off an early hook. The pianos during the verses give a little haunting vibe almost sounding like a
Cure song. I like it a lot.
Pretenders -
Hymn to HerI was never into Pretender ballads. Probably something touching about the lyrics, but that's not too important to me in music. It also depends on the artist I guess.
The Jesus and Mary Chain -
Happy When It RainsThese extras of theirs' are much better than their big hits. This one is particular hooked me from the intro.
Warren Zevon -
Detox MansionVocally this tuned me out. 'nuff said.
Concrete Blonde -
Dance Along the EdgeSounds like this band had different rock vibes. First off this sounds like a better would be
Pretenders' song. The chorus captures the right vibe that tunes me in. The rest of the song sounds just fine
The Call -
In the RiverWay better than the song we ranked. His vocals sound different. Was there two different singers to this band? For some reason he sounds way stronger here. I know the guitars do.
The Long Ryders -
Want You BadSounds like Britpop. I kinda like it. Sounds like the
Monkees, but also a little bit of
Gin Blossoms.
Los Lobos -
Come On, Let's Gohere is the other
Ritchie Valens original and the only other Lobos song I liked. Which is actually a cover , so technically it doesn't really count as points for Los Lobos.
Echo & The Bunnymen -
People Are StrangeHard not to love the song when it sounds almost entirely the same as the original. Is that considered cheating?
Sheila Take a Bow -
The SmithsA little on the harder side for the band when it comes to the guitars, but that's why I loved it so. That and well the vocals.
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For -
U2and Here is this song. I know you all gonna rank it high. I won't tank it. far from it, but I never really cared for it either. Still miles better than "Where The Street have No Name"
Behind the Wheel -
Depeche ModeThis one is pretty good. Not a D.P fav of mine, but good retro playback material.
Never Let Me Down Again -
Depeche ModeWay better than
"Behind The Wheel". I like the pianos ,and the chorus has the haunting New Wave vibe I dig on.
Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before -
The SmithsAnother Smiths Classic. A great way to hook you is to throw a catchy chorus line at you from the start.
