100.
Long Slide (For an Out) -
The Del FuegosDon't know why this got a
#100 other than the fact that it just doesn't belong here at all. I didn't find much use for songs with this vibe on Alternative anyway.
99.
Thank You Girl -
John HiattThis has got to be the quickest that my #100 has been eliminated.
Not complaining either. Those vocals gotta go.
98.
Let's Work -
Mick JaggerI admit this was silly. The video was WTF silly. I don't know what possesed Mick to do this video, but the song itself was semi fun like I found that
Talking Heads song to be. "Nothing but Flowers" I'm pretty sure
Peter Wolf isn't far behind?
97.
V. Thirteen -
Big Audio DynamiteCan't say I'm sad to this lone leave. Can't wait to start ranking some proper
Clash songs.
96.
I Wanna Be a Flintstone -
The Screaming Blue MessiahsThis was ridiculous. Was this from that
Flintstones movie? That was shit too. As much as this crap song got on my nerves I still prefer it over many of Alt's songs from 2020. Also where that hell is that Hari -Krshna band or whatever?
95.
Radio Waves -
Roger Waters Here we go. This was great. Very 80's I bet most of you upgraded that Pink Floyd song tho.
94.
Black Light Trap -
ShriekbackGood call. Now lets get rid of that other Budda wonder.
93.
This Is the World Calling -
Bob Geldofman this sounded so uninspired. Just couldn't swim out of my bottom 10. How do you go from
"Do They Know It's Christmas" and that huge Live-Aid concert to this?
92.
The Wanderer -
The Dave Edmunds BandI upgraded this for the sheer fact that the original was featured in
The Wanderers movie. Dave did a decent attempt at capturing the vibe of
Dion's original. I love that song and movie.
91.
Dark Light -
The Beat FarmersA harder rock vibe on Alt. Why Am I not surprised you guys tanked it. This sounded more like 80's Guitar rock from KLOS. That's why I dug it. Also the
ZZ Top guitars.
90.
Twenty Killer Hurts -
Gene Loves Jezebel
Why does
Gene Loves Jezebel get tanked? These guys had a great look and injected an ultracool Rock vibe into the Modern Rock world. I used to love those
David Lee Roth like yelps. We always play this band's songs in the rock clubs on this side of the border.
89.
Bed of Lies -
Cruzados This one has a cool driving bassline. So sad to see all the good harder rock songs leaving this early.
88.
Day-In Day-Out -
David BowieI thought I would like this better because of the big 80's sound, but I just didn't. He kinda sounds like he injected some lyrics that fit with the melody which isn't always the way to write music. It's still a nice listen once in a while, but pales in comparison to say
"Modern Love".87.
Caravan of Love -
The HousemartinsThis one felt so out of place on this list. I can go for some 50's acapaela/ Motown whatever type of doo-wop songs from that era, but this was majorly boring, had the wrong vocal tones and that Illuminati church thing didn't help either. At one point this was my
#100.
86.
Sentimental Hygiene -
Warren ZevonA few of these Harder rock songs did really suck. Stupid lyric to sing a long to. This was that
"Werewolves In London" guy. Not that that howling wonder was a masterpiece, but this one was just boring.
continuing with some extras:Thompson Twins-
Get That Lovehere was a
Thompson Twins song I do not recall. It wasn't too terrible. You can still here the basic Twins instruments, but this song sounded more for
Howard Jones. Even when compared to
"Lay Your Hands" this one really had no edge at all.
Tonio K.-
I'm Supposed to Have Sex With YouWho the hell was Tonio K..
This sounded like it was geared towards the dance clubs. Those vocals totally sucked and the title while sounding cool failed miserably at delivering. Easy bottom 10 here, and probably would have gotten a few #100's.
The Smithereens -
In a Lonely PlaceI was not into this ALternative Modern Rock sound in '87. It sounded way to simple musically. I wouldn't have guessed this was The Smithereens , but I never really cared for this band anyway.
Information Society -
RunningHere is another one I knew through
KPWR not
KROQ. It had that Freestyle vibe the band injected beautifully into there music. If you like this style check out
The Voice In Fashion, Secret Society and even
TKA. I never understood how this straight out Freestyle band made it big while most others failed.
The Cult -
Wild FlowerI basically loved the Cult when they first hit the rock scene. You could easily find this band's songs on a Hair Metal playlist. I would have slotted this one so very high. Almost in the same range as
"Love Removal Machine". Listen to that guitar solo and tell me you wouldn't rank this one high.
Pet Shop Boys -
RentPet Shop Boys could easily inject any music genre into their music and still sound great. This song had a lighter sound for them, but contrasted it nicely with the freestyle synths after the chorus.
Johnny O, Sa-Fire and others come to mind when I hear that melody. very pleasant song I would have ranked pretty high.
Dead or Alive - Something in My HouseI put DOA in huge fonts, because they are basically my Hi-NRG kings and Queen. This is easily my favorite of the extras so far and it has everything to do with
Pete Burns vocals. Not just his tones , but his delivery served a strong High Energy vibe making this one one of my favorite DOA songs. The haunting
Haloween vibe in the lyrics is another of my favorite aspects of the song. This single version only taps into their perfect NRG mode. If this had been on the list I would have used the extended version which includes a gorgeous Flamenco added guitar. Forget about it.I most likely would have had a different
#1 song.
Wang Chung -
Hypnotize Me.I really liked this song. There was so much more to this band after
"Dance Hall Days". They did the whole soundtrack for the film
'To Live and Die In L.A.". There was
"Fire In The Twilight" from
'The Breakfast Club" and this fantastic Sophistipop song. back in 1982 it would have been considered
Hall & Oates Blue Eyed Soul. Pleasant for the ears and soothing for the heart. probably be in my top 20 on this list.
The Damned -
In Dulce DecorumThis band is cool for their Goth vibe. The laid back melody gives another kind of musical soothing. This one here sounded a bit like a slower
The Cult jam.
