When finding those screens for I Fall Apart, Congratulations and Better Now, he also apparently missed that Goodbyes and Wow. are all three and Enemies The fact that the 2 smash hits i said can easy stomp on all these songs combined. Theyβre even in the all time list lool And the fact that circles is #20 and sunflower is only #26 on spotify after a whole year and a half says it all

The thing that baffles me the most that the sunflower has sold 9 million units ONLY after 85 weeks. And on the other hand The Box sold 6 million only in 6 months. Sunflower never really left Top 50 on Spotify and Top 100 in AM. Longevity played a huge part there and never really had a big peak. Looking forward to the deserving Diamond for SF.

Lucid Dreams hasn't left the US Spotify Weekly Top 100 since it entered the region in the week of 2018-05-10. Whilst its true it had a resurgence following Juice WRLD's death, its still at #42 on the weekly chart 24 weeks later.

The margins must be very small if Meek dropped that much in just under a day.

So Republic Records will no longer using the term 'urban' to refer to hip-hop and r & b. Does this mean that eventually some of the Billboard genre charts will change their names as they have in the past?

Has black music usually been categorized as 'urban' or did it just happen to hip-hop and R&B? What's the history behind it?

They label shit r&b and hip hop all the time for black artists when the song is obviously pop. A lot of BeyoncΓ©βs/ Drakeβs songs for example. Oh and truth hurts too.. pop. Goes for the Grammy categories too..

Most importantly, the Grammys should get rid of all their Urban categories.

It's a two-way street: if a black artist does pop, it's "urban" or "r&b" (like The Weeknd or Lizzo's hit singles), if a white artist does whatever music, it's always pop. Not always. White artists also have the privilege of having their music being called rock, alternative, electronic and whatever other genre of music they actually make. Black artists are the ones who get called urban regardless of what genre of music they make. White rappers never get called pop stars. Post Malone makes hip-hop-adjacent music at best and the rap world was quick to embrace him. Billie's quote isn't entirely true. If she had any songs where she actually rapped or used a rap-cadence, she would have been called a rap artist. Billie makes indie pop/electropop music, but it still falls under the pop umbrella.

Has black music usually been categorized as 'urban' or did it just happen to hip-hop and R&B? What's the history behind it? The term βUrban Musicβ was coined by New York radio DJ Frankie Crocker in 1974 as a synonym for βBlack Musicβ, as the majority of successful Black radio stations were based in βUrbanβ neighbourhoods and not in the city districts like most White radio stations. Most Black radio DJβs didnβt want to be based in the city as they felt that remaining in their local areas would be more authentic and representative of the communities as a whole. βUrban Contemporaryβ radio stations would curate playlists made up entirely of solely Black-oriented music genres such as βR&B, Soul, Funk, Quiet Storm, Jazz, Soul-Jazzβ and Afro-Caribbean genres such as βReggae, Dancehall, Dub & Skaβ. Seldom did they play music by White artists unless they were R&B/Soul acts too. For example, David Bowieβs βFAMEβ was one of the top three most played records on Black radio in 1975 despite only peaking at #21 on the Soul charts. Average White Band/Hall & Oates/Bee Gees were relative staples on Black radio at the time too. Also, whereas there were a plethora of crossover βR&B/Soulβ hits by R&B/Soul acts on the βPopβ charts at the time, U.S radio was still largely segregated. Per Billboard, the R&B charts at the time were referred to as the: βHot Soul Singles/Albums Chartsβ. When the Chicago/Philadelphia-oriented Soul/Funk Music, that dominated the β70βs, grew out of popularity by the early β80βs and Contemporary R&B/Hip-Hop became a mainstay, Billboard thought itβd be wise to change the name of the βSoulβ charts to the: βHot Black Singles/Album Chartsβ. This lasted from 1981-1990. Since then itβs mostly been referred to as the R&B/Hip-Hop charts.

Maddie and Tae in the Top 200 of Spotify. I was hoping that would happen with them finally being added to the main country playlist. The little song that could.
Who would have predicted Maddie & Tae and Carly Pearce in the Top 200 of Spotify together 12 months ago?

The fact that "thank u, next" is labeled "Pop" on AM but "After Hours" is labeled "R&B/Soul" is very interesting.

So... this week should be even weaker than last week.
Songs with 20k+ sales = 0 Songs with 80M+ airplay = 0 Songs with 30M+ streams = 1
