Active Rock is harder-edged and more current than Rock. You won't hear as much classic rock on an Active Rock station as you would on a Rock station.
Rhythmic is more pop-oriented than Urban. It's targetted at all races, while Urban is only targetted at blacks. In general, a rhythmic station has very tight current rotations and very few recurrents or gold tracks. Rhythmics will sometimes play pop or dance songs, while Urbans will almost always shy away from them.

Sometimes, an urban station will bill itself as a rhythmic station as a way to gain advertising, since there is still a stigma of advertising on urban radio. Stations like XHTZ San Diego and KHXT Memphis falls under this scenario.

100000watts lists KPHW as urban, but on Mediabase they still call it CHR-Rhythmic.

Same could go for WQHT. It's always been called a Rhythmic, but it's really an Urban. Billboard/Airplay Monitor has it classified as R&B/Hip-Hop.

Speaking of NYC radio stations, since Z-100 (like TONS of CHR/Pop stations out there), plays TONS of rhythmic music, would it make sense for WQHT or WKTU to flip to Country?
NYC could use a country outlet, considering what a banner year 2004 was for the format.
Since WQHT & WKTU have been in the 4.0 to 4.9 range ratings wise for ages (as has Z100), would a flip from either of those stations to country result in the other one skyrocketing in the ratings, while simultaneously blowing a major holes in Z100's ratings, similar to what happened to KIIS-FM after Power 106 signed on and took MOST of KIIS-FM's teens?

WKTU is not urban though. It's dance. There are three stations in New York that are mainstream urban, and one Urban AC. WQHT is more of a hip-hop station. WPWR (I think) leans R&B, as does WBLS which also plays 60's, 70's, and 80's R&B. WRKS is Urban AC. If any station should flip to country, it's WNEW.

Rhythmic seems to becoming more and more Urban now. Songs like "Let's Get It Started" seem to be made for the rhythmic format, but I guess that song is now too pop for rhytmic.

I think that sounds like a good idea. It would shake up stale NY radio.

Rhythmic seems to becoming more and more Urban now. Songs like "Let's Get It Started" seem to be made for the rhythmic format, but I guess that song is now too pop for rhytmic. What was "Urban" last year is "pop" this year, it seems. I don't even think Janet Jackson would be considered R&B anymore by ANY criteria, whereas she used to walk the fine line rather admirably before. Mind you, I doubt she'd be caught dead working with Lil' Jon and the like. An example of a song that was just one year too late to make it big on rhythmic radio would have to be Mis-Teeq's "Scandalous". Most likely, had it been released in 2003 when it was released in the UK, it would have been an equally big hit in America. But Warner waited a whole year before getting the Mis-Teeq project underway, and by that time the music had completely changed once more by way of the beatless and tuneless (aka Usher syndrome). So you're right, in essence. It all depends on the timing of the artist.
