Imagine tim's reaction had this won the whole thing... We (finally?) lose a single from the album, this one being the fourth single during the era, peaking at #5 on country radio in mid 2002 and reaching the top half of the Hot 100 to boot, with a peak of #48.

I love "My Heart Is Lost To You"! The Spanish influence to the arrangement helps it to have a really memorable personality. That being said, the song still manages to be kinda forgettable just because the rest of the hits were so big (aside from "Every River", which is just a better song than this one). This is the correct single to leave first, and arguments could definitely be made for it overstaying. "Go West" or "Last Thing I Do" would have looked pretty great in the top 5!

One of the biggest country songs of 2002, "The Long Goodbye" was a #1 hit for the duo, reaching the penthouse in late March of 2002 and peaking at #39 on the Hot 100 as well.

Oh my. THIS is an interesting development! I figured "Every River" would be toast when facing off against the trio of giant hits!!!
I just love the way "The Long Goodbye" is sung and produced. I remember reading some article once where Ronnie talked about how for weeks he would go out to the barn alone and just practice this song, getting it to sound exactly the way he wanted it to, perfecting all the little nuances against all the echoey walls, so that it would be perfect when they finally went in to record it. And I feel like all his hard work paid off, because this one has always stood out to me as a masterclass in vocal work. I know I got a perfect ranking, but I am honestly a little bit sad to see it leaving now!

Despite me putting "The Long Goodbye" just outside of the top 5 I'm glad it ended up making it in. This is such a great song and one that I think I often tend to overlook for whatever reason.

"Only in America" needs to fuck off. It'll be gross to see it beat out "Every River" though I won't be surprised, sadly.
Thankfully I can take solace knowing it has no chance of beating "Ain't Nothin' Bout You" at least. That should be a mortal lock for #1.

If "Every River" could sneak into the top 2 here I'll be so damn happy, such an underrated single from them! Glad to see we had the taste to bring it this far already!

I love the two big singles, but I’d be happy with an upset as well.

As much as I love "Only In America", I've gotta agree that I would actually be quite thrilled if "Every River" managed a surprise top 2 finish!! I think that would be my preferred outcome, tbh

"Every River" has always been one of those songs I always forget about. It just does very little for me so I hope it is out in 3rd, "Only In America" #2, and "Ain't Nothing 'Bout You" at #1. Definitely interested to see how this ends. I am sad that "The Long Goodbye" didn't make the top 3 cause I think that deserved it more than "Every River"

They just might have all the votes counted for the presidential election before the final top 3 are revealed for this

"Only In America" is such a nostalgic song for me! I love everything about it, from the electric guitars to the melody to the way Ronnie nails this vocal. I think one of the coolest things about this song in retrospect is that it came out at literally the PERFECT time to really make an impact. It was their active single when the 9/11 terrorist attacks happened. Lol it tends to be remembered among the wave of patriotic songs that followed that tragedy, and subsequently watered down because a lot of those other songs are seen as pandering and time-period-specific. But no, this one was literally already on its way to being a hit when everything happened. I don't thing there has ever been an instance where a song's impact changed THAT dramatically in the middle of its chart run.

...and bboat11 speaks the truth! "Only in America" was actually released in mid-June of 2001 (June 18, to be precise) and went on to become one of the biggest country hits of 2001. This actually played a little do-si-do with the #2 song briefly, despite it being the most polarizing song of the entire rankdown. I, along with two others, lose their #1s, while a pretty huge majority of us ranked this in our top half. Not surprised to see any detractors here tbh.

"Every River" has long been one of my most underrated favorites from them. This song is sooooo catchy, and really feels like it should have been a smash hit. The melody just sounds so classic. To see it finish in the top 2 here feels amazing, despite the fact that it was my #3.
"Ain't Nothing 'Bout You" has been DUE for a win, baby!!!!!! Seeing it come so close in their singles rankdown only to lose to a duo of songs that had already won before was low-key disappointing to me, but now it's nice to see it finally happening!!!! This song is a jam in every sense of the word. The guitar work especially just plain kicks ass. When I think of Brooks & Dunn, this is one of those songs that perfectly encapsulates everything about them as artists in my mind.

The people who hate "America" songs are pretty consistent, tbh. Including our fellow Canadian poster who was the lone participant to put this in their bottom 3! Patriotic songs are rather hit or mess for me with "Only in America" being one that happens to work really well. As a couple of you already mentioned this usually gets grouped together with other similarly patriotic songs which were released in response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, but it was actually released back in June of that year. It's hard to wrap my head around the fact that this is almost 20 years old already because I think it sounds just as good and fresh today as it did back then. I still hear this often enough on the radio that I never actively seek it out, but whenever it does come on it makes for such a great song to drive along to. I'm continually surprised at how well "Every River" is received on Pulse as it has always been one of my favorite songs from the album. I went back and forth between this and "Go West" for my top 2, but either way they are rather interchangeable as I like both equally. If anything was going to come ahead of my top ranking song I'm glad it was this one. I never doubted that "Ain't Nothing 'bout You" would come out ahead as it was not only a huge hit for them but still has lots of recurrent airplay to this day. In that regards, it's both a bit overplayed for me as well as not necessarily pleasing to my ears. That said, after the disappointing Tight Rope era the duo needed something to reinvigorate their career and this song succeeded in doing just that.

I'm happy to see "Ain't Nothing 'Bout You" win as that song just does not get old, even with the overplay I never got sick of it

The only other one I can think of, and it had the opposite effect. "Coalmine" as well. I always thought that too, but "Coalmine" was technically released after the Sago Mine disaster happened rather than it already being out during the event.

Ooh, this got bumped I see! I originally planned on doing the second album of this series being open for submissions throughout this month with reveals in the second week of the next month, but I'll hold off until after the New Year. Get excited though because we'll tackle an album from the '90s next!
