The playlist support for this on Spotify is insanely low. Somehow, Maroon 5's new song is above this on Today's Top Hits despite the fact that it isn't doing nearly as well. Playlist placement is relative to how well its performing in the given playlist, not on the platform overall. It's possible for a song to be performing generally well (fans streaming the song via their own playlists, the album, their saved libraries) and not reacting well by those listening to Today's Top Hits.

As someone mentioned, this already hit #1 on Hot 100 so anything at this point would be the icing on the cake.

Honestly at this point, whatever happens happens. She has nothing more to prove, she got 3 top 10 hits off this album, widespread critical acclaim, and I feel like the general public is starting to like her a lot more. The recent "Love Story" dance trend on TikTok has millions of videos posted and tens of millions of views and counting. She’s doing just fine.
If radio dropped this tomorrow I wouldn’t even be upset (although it would be nice if this could get some longevity lol it’s such a great song).

Truth is no one wants to see another TROLLZ, but I don't see this dying as fast.
The historic fall thing is an exaggeration.

I like the song of course and only posted it hoping the song improves after this week. As a Swift fan I like to see this hang in the top 10 for awhile, This deserves to last longer here than “Me!” did over a year ago.

I don’t think this is a pop single type of song. I like the album though.
The thing is, she is solidly in Beyoncé territory now IMO and it’s been coming for years. All the signs have been there for a long time.
She is an established artist with a huge fanbase and she can pack arenas. That’s not going anywhere anytime soon. She can release music and it will be heard by millions no matter what. She doesn’t need pop radio and pop radio no longer has her on their It list.
She can get by on buzzworthy videos and commercial placements and whatever else she cooks up.
I’m saying all this to say this song is likely going nowhere and it’s not a big deal.

#13 on US Spotify being described as dead in streaming cardigan is predicted to go down to #8 and it's #4 on ODAS. This is not a Trollz situation (Which debuted and peaked at #15 on US Spotify btw!) Taylor doesn't need to be #1 in every single possible metric for weeks to be considered a reliable hitmaker in 2020

I’m saying all this to say this song is likely going nowhere and it’s not a big deal. While I would agree with this if the song was underperforming, it's performing extremely well on radio and it's clinging on streaming despite all the new releases. Its performance in the urban-dominated AM is stellar so far. It's a little bit of a stretch saying this song is probably going nowhere when it already went so many places and is probably here to stay until the pop callouts are released.

She really has nothing to prove at this point in her career. Album sales, song sales, radio, streaming, tour, grammys, etc.

If this song can last 20 weeks on the charts it's a win. She has been struggling a bit with longevity with the last couple albums, but for this type of song it would be amazing to reach recurrency. So far it seems like airplay will get it there.

I just mean I don’t think this is going to be some kind of huge hit. It’s her lead single and she got that initial flush of activity because she’s who she is, but a month from now I’m not expecting much to have happened. This should end up pretty moderate. I think alternative and AAA longevity could happen... that would be great. Especially AAA because that really fits the albums sound.

And maybe the pop performance won't be as bad as we think.

I think Taylor is one of those select few (or maybe even only) artists with whom expectations are rarely, if ever, tempered in the way they should be (due to her being one of a kind in terms of consistency in commercial viability). Tbh this going top 20 is already more than I expected if I am being honest. We have to remind ourselves neither this song nor its parent album are tailored for radio or commercial success. The fact that it has garnered such success in spite of itself is already pretty extraordinary and a testament to its quality. I could see people clamoring to exclaim "cardigan" is a failure if it doesn't hit, say the top 10, but it was never meant to serve that purpose anyway IMO. Basically, this is the era she went full tilt into artistic expression and allowed everything else to take a backseat and as such we will likely see that choice reflected in various chart performances this era. Granted, I would love to see this kind of work strike lightening and ride the wave to find even more success (in the form of "Exile", "the 1", potential singles etc), but I know the odds are kind of stacked against it. We will obviously see how things play out, but being one of the biggest albums of the year out of the gate, the critical acclaim, records being broken, I would say its success has already been cemented and any further single success is mere icing atop an already gorgeous cake. I mean who honestly saw a song like "cardigan" being a #1? Crazy. lol I think Folklore set up the second half of her career absolutely exquisitely (completely agree with the transitionary Beyonce parallel given earlier).

I just hope she doesn't completely abandon the poppier sound of her previous three albums.
I'm a sucker for pop, what can I say...

Cardigan at #19 on the pop chart is great, it is doing better than anyone expected on the format and the drop to #8 is better than anyone expected on its 2nd week. It should hold stable with the all new releases coming up in the next few weeks.
