The Man was maybe her first full fledged flop. It barely charted on the Hot 100 (as a single). I guess OOTW and New Romantics did kinda poorly too, but those at least went top 50 on the Hot 100 and were 6th and 7th singles. The Story of Us and Fearless didn't do much beyond their first weeks either. Nonetheless, The Man is still getting almost as many daily streams as the title track and about 3x as much as album tracks. I wouldn't spend a huge amount of resources on single promo at this point, but a few performances would be nice if only for the fans. |

Is peaking at #10 on country radio more noteworthy than peaking at #9 on HAC radio? To me, yes, given country was her core format at the time and it's a larger format. But I see your point, and I suppose an argument could be made that HAC is now her core format. Just adding to this too, "Fearless" also had more longevity - while songs like "Out of the Woods" and "New Romantics" raced up the chart super fast then dropped off like a rock pretty quickly, "Fearless" had a steady climb to its peak (it hit its peak of #10 on its 13th week at least on Billboard - late March 2010) then bounced around the same range for a little over a month before collapsing in May 2020. I think that also makes a difference in labelling "Fearless" as a hit for her where as "Out of the Woods" and "New Romantics" might not necessarily be the case. |

Out of the Woods and New Romantics still outpeaked The Man's single run by a healthy margin.
And even The Story of Us reached around 20 spots higher than The Man.

Not that it's a huge bar or a stat people are clamoring for, but for the year to date Spotify playlists I make for each format, "cardigan" just earned more points than "The Man" as of this week for pop, so woohoo!

It's hard to compare the success of some of these songs considering how much the industry has changed from Fearless to now.
I (personally) feel like "The Man" was a bigger hit and will be remembered more than "The Story of Us" and "New Romantics" regardless of their Hot 100 runs as singles.

I also remember "Safe & Sound" from The Hunger Games and "Both Of Us" with B.O.B not doing much on the charts either at the time. The songs had big debuts and fell off the weeks after. "Today Was A Fairytale" peaked at #2 and had no longevity on the charts either. Taylor has a few misses on the chart. At this point in her career,Taylor shouldn't be worry about getting hits with the "Folklore" material. If "Cardigan" as a lead single won't do much,I don't think the followups will fare better than this."Folklore" is a great album and will get Taylor back in the hunt for another well deserved AOTY nomination. |
