I meant "You Belong With Me" and "Today Was a Fairytale", (plus "Love Story" only reaching #4). It seemed like maybe stars were never going to align for her for a bit (especially after "Mine" leaked and only went up to #3). Ooooh right, now as I re-read, what you are saying makes much more sense. It is remarkable it took her 6 years to earn her first number 1 and that she "only" has 6 number 1s to date, but there are so many reasons for that. Besides the fact that country songs almost never hit #1, both LS and YBWM had very long chart runs with peaks at different radio formats at different times. IKYWT could've potentially hit #1 had it been available for streaming. And as mentioned in my previous post "Me!" and "YNTCD" were just unfortunate timing. Luckily she has proven herself to be the ultimate queen of the Billboard 200, so the relative low number of #1 singles doesn't really matter so much, and it's just incredible she's still able to hit the top 14 years into her career with such a non-mainstream song. It's #9 on iTunes with behind two new releases.... It also climbed back up to #3 on US Spotify today which is the true indication of how the GP is responding to a song in 2020. |

^ no surprise to see S.F. support this song. KMVQ spun “Cruel Summer” months after Lover dropped, I remember losing my mind on a drive to Safeway in October 2019. Good station, though I wish they’d just remove “Yummy” from their playlist already lol

The itunes performance of this song is shameful. I've noticed the songs that tend to consistently do well on itunes are big radio hits. Before Blinding Lights it was Dance Monkey and now it's Watermelon Sugar. I wonder what radio format contributes to itunes sales the most. At this point I'd say the driving formats for iTunes sales is Hot AC and pop with country aiding a bit here and there. But at the end of the day, digital sales are so low they really don't matter much anymore. |
