There's no reason this song needs to be seven minutes long. You could have cut off a couple of minutes, and this would have been way better.
There was a seven minute UB40 song, and THIS was the one that felt like it was dragging.

Another really nice little first listen. I liked the chorus especially. I can understand why someone would be turned off by the vocals, though.

85. Right and Wrong - Joe Jackson"Steppin' Out" was innovative. Jazzy, Alternative New Wave. This song had none of that. sounded like a bad jam session. Not even the bassline moved me this time. 84. Slide Away - The Dream SyndicateThe song's melody sounding promising, but the drab vocals ultimately shot it down my list. Too many songs sounding like wanna be R.E.M. clones. 83. Rich - Lloyd Cole & The CommotionsThis was really cool. More of that big 80's percussion sound I prefer, while also sounding like what I liked in the 90's. If you ever listen to some of those Ric Ocasek solo albums. This would be one of those filler tracks. 82. No Money Down - Lou ReedI almost ranked this higher for the melody alone. Then I realized that if you remove that little synth beat, all you are left with is a Lou Reed song sounding like a really bad Dire Straits song. Also the music video is disturbing and unwatchable. No thanks. 81. In a Lifetime - Clannad f/BonoFirst time listen. Gorgeous melody. Bono could have been replaced with any other cameo for all I care. It was the female vocals that really took it up my list. Bono didn't sound bad tho, but the female vocals were the aesthetic bliss. 80. Drive, She Said - Stan RidgwayYup another first time listen. I'm pretty sure Stan's vocals are going to be his downfall, but he has sounded like this since "Mexican Radio" so you either dig it or you don't. What I really liked was the song itself. kinda darkwave if you think about it, and much more 80's sounding than most songs on this list. 79. Kind Words (And a Real Good Heart) - Joan Armatradingeveryone praises Tracey (wake me from a coma) Chapman acoustic hell, but tank this awesome rocking Tina Turner with a guitar like jam. How does that work out? Looks like it returns on mainstream RD too. 78. Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood - Elvis CostelloThis song has been covered so many times. Including in Italo Disco King Kong & The D.J. Girls fashion. Elvis brings on a different vibe for the song by dropping the disco vibe Santa Esmeralda added and brought it back down to the mellow original of Nina Simone. I'm not sure Elvis vocals are the best for it but this version keeps its nostalgic emotion. The other Elvis Costello song also anchors the range were I started liking songs from this Rd. Everything under #64 sounded pretty disposable to me. 77. Call It Democracy - Bruce CockburnThis kinda had an 80's melody to it, but it was also mind numbing boring. I hate this kind of lyrical bull in music. Bruce looks like he is ready to drop over as he is singing this borefest. 76. Tokyo Storm Warning - Elvis Costello & The Attractions Not a bad first time listen. I liked the structure of the song. It had a lot of 60's vibe to it. It could have been cut down to 4:minutes and sounded less dragged out. 75. Children of the Revolution - Violent FemmesHere is a band I never really cared for. "Blister In The Sun" eventually grew on me but not enough to want to chart it. Joe Femmes sounded like he picked up some vocal tips from Mick Jones. Not easy to sit through. The fact that the background bass beat reminded of Foreigner's "Juke Box Hero" bothered me even more. 74. Lonely Street - Guadalcanal DiaryI hate this hokey AAA wilderness vibe. This definitely had some folk in it. Vocals struck me like a bad barber shop quartet. 73. Get It On - The WoodentopsThis was one of those first time listens that gave me some Oingo Boingo musical vibes. Good vocals, NRGetic , a nice nervous little beat to keep you on your feet too, but it was really about that Oingo Boingo vibe. 72. Spirit of '76 - The AlarmThis was a great song. Stared off a little on the testy side with the slower intro, but I do enjoy harmonics, and it builds up real nicely into a John Mellencamp heartland atmospheric feeling. my only beef is that you don't need the song to be 76 minutes long. 71. Throw Your Arms Around Me - Hunters and CollectorsThis kinda felt like being left out side on the sidewalk on a rainy day...without a raincoat. Which means I wasn't ready for this mellow AAA vibe in '86. The vocals tones were not bad, but the delivery sounded boring. *Hey I got a question? I know everyone loves The Ramones. Me probably the most on this board, but The Ramones synth chiming it up ,and sounding like a Christmas jingle travesty was begging to be tanked. Why is it still in here?

Two songs among this set of extras are getting their own posts. But here we find, among other things, very early entries from two bands that would go on to major Alt success in the 90s (James and Soul Asylum), a cut off the second Feelies album, a minor Hot 100 charter in "Mutual Surrender" (peaked at #62), and a top 20 hit in the UK and Australia ("Respect Yourself"). #YE | Artist | Song | Video | #190 | James | Scarecrow |
| #189 | Fetchin Bones | High Noon |
| #188 | Bourgeois Tagg | Mutual Surrender (What a Wonderful World) |
| #187 | Latin Quarter | Modern Times |
| #186 | The Feelies | On the Roof |
| #185 | Crazy 8's | Touchy Situation |
| #183 | Soul Asylum | Tied to the Tracks |

And what better way to follow that up than with an even more popular song of theirs? We'll at least get to rank "In Between Days" off this album in 1985. EXTRA

This particular Stan song is driven hard by its lyrical content. In a lesser year, it would have escaped my bottom 40 based purely on the story being told.

I would like to formally apologize for saying in Alt 1994 that these guys had no business being played on the Alt format. This clearly shows that they had a history on the format, and I was misinformed. (That, and Dave Wakeling being a big part of the act. I was a moron.)
It's also worth noting that this is way better than the Staple Singers cover, despite my ranking.

Here comes "in a lesser rankdown" again, but, "in a lesser rankdown", I would have treated this better. Put this in the 1986 Hot 100 RD, for example, and it's probably in my top half. Different standards.
Interesting to think that the singer of "Teenage Kicks" went from that to this in seven years.

"A Good Heart" was like the Alison Moyet song last year because my first thought upon hearing it was, wow that was very poppy and average, *looks at international chart peaks* ok it's definitely finishing about 20 spots higher than I ranked it

I liked this one a pretty decent amount, but I have no idea what it's doing ahead of "Get It On". It's much less interesting.
