I'll be honest, I kind of forgot about this song, and that's why it dropped in my ranking. I'm not sure how I forgot about this, this is fairly memorable.
I'm tired.

A nice song, but Modern English were pretty much done as a band, by this point. It's more of a last gasp than anything.

I'd like to forget that mid-80's and onward Talking Heads ever happened, really. This wasn't bad, really, but it's so lame.

Truth is, I didn't dislike any of the songs on this rankdown. The ones in my bottom 10 I just thought were..."eh." Not great, but not bad either.

70. The Big Heat - Stan RidgwayI kinda liked both of his entries on the same level, but how cool was the song's main music beat. 69. Too Much or Nothing - General Public Simply appalling. This is the BIG hit off the record. Love the big 80's sound with all the brass and melody. Danceable and makes you feel good all over. I swear if English Beat gets this kind of treatment I'm gonna get publicly pissed at you all. 68 A Good Heart - Feargal Sharkey I really love this song. The whole song reminds me of Cock Robin "When Your Heart Is Weak". Nice to see some Irish Sophistipop make this top 100, but sad to this out of the top 20. Not counting the U.S. which really let this song slip by their fingers this song went #1 in four Countries. Including one of the ones I visited. 67. Move Me - The WoodentopsAnother First time listen that made it onto my top 40. Aside from the NRGetic beat I can't really put my finger at what made me like this more than anyone here, but just the fact that I'm its highest ranker kinda makes sense. 66. Walk This Way - Run-DMCNot even the love I have for Steven Tyler's glorious vocal fire ,and one of Classic Rock's best guitar riffs ever could get me to put this one in my top half. You take Steven out and this would probably be in my bottom 5. That is how much an Aerosmith cameo can upgrade a shouty rap cover of a rock classic. Anyway good call cuz this kinda sucks. Now how about we kick out that stupid chiming travesty from the Ramones. 65. Now I'm Talking About Now - The Swimming Pool Q'sI found the melody of the song very interesting. A nice mix or Irish and English melodies from an American band. The female vocals helped a lot, but the real aspect that got me to upgrade this one a tad were the percussion. I hear a little of "Don't Come Around Here No More" by Tom Petty. 64. Depending on You - Rain ParadeGood another one of my bottom tanks. That only leaves three melodically challenged songs left in my tank. This song bored me into progressive Modern Rock hell. 63. Baby Ran - 54-40This was ok for a first time listen. Needed much more vitality for me to tap my feet, but the guitars had a bit of that later Alternative Rock style that I kinda now long for in today's Alt chart. 62. The Red and the Black - MinutemenI was really enjoying the harder Guitar vibes of this song, than the singer opened his mouth, and I was starting to wish it had been an instrumental instead. 61. Whistling In the Dark - EasterhouseAnother one those first time listens that just sounded like everything else on the list. I had to rank this one based on those continuous guitar strums. I kinda dug those, on a " London Calling" range, but not much more of the song enticed me. 60. Something to Believe In - Ramones....and there it is 20 some slots higher than it deserves. Ramones Aid? Was this an actual thing or just the theme in the video to excuse the cheesiness of this song. This sounded like there take on Sammy Hagar's "Your Love Is Driving me Crazy" which I love, but those chimes were driving me crazy. Not to mention that any connection between the verses and chorus melodies was nonexistent. Than you have the whole We Are The World cast cameos that I didn't ask for. ![B-|](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/notamused.png) The whole experience was just a great big mind F U C K that I didn't care for. Hopefully you will never see me rank Ramones lower than this. Oh and for the record. First and most definitely last time listen. 59. Ink and Paper - Modern EnglishThis was released right before "I Melt With You" had it re release . Anyway this is exactly the type of new wave upbeat songs you would find in my 45' collection. i'm kinda glad I was living in Europe at the time because this is what was on the radio. 58. Lost Weekend - Lloyd Cole & The CommotionsThis sounds like another 80's hit. Either that or I was distantly remember this one for somewhere else, but I really enjoyed the feel good vibe the guitars in this song gives. 57. Look Away - Big CountryA band I enjoyed since they first released "In A Big Country". This one had that kinda same Heartland ALternative Rock vibe that doesn't always entice me, but I do remember this one, and it makes a world of difference when the song has radio friendly melodies in mind for its audience. Also in my 45' collection. 51. Wild Wild Life - Talking HeadsThis isn't so bad. It was a big hit and it is fun, but I decided to sacrifice it to get some of my first time listens up in the top half. By the way those are the type of cameos I prefer. They ones that just add visual enticement. * Five songs away for the top 50 and I'm really kinda surprised "Higher Love" is still swimming. Especially since of was a huge Top 10 pop hit ,and we know how much we all love those making Alternative Rock chart appearances.

No way I'm letting these classics fade away into PULSE archives of forgotten extras without giving them a proper send off. Now here is the big chunk of the 1986 I remember. You will see a huge difference of enthusiasm between these and the songs we ranked. What no videos for these classics? That won't do. I'm only gonna go for the ones I charted and have in my 45' which is gonna be a pretty hefty list anyway.collection Pet Shop Boys - Love Comes Quickly (KROQ #59)Please was a New Wave dance masterpiece. Stephen Hague did an amazing job as producer, but Bobby Orlnado also returned and lend a helping hand on Track #1. You can hear his presence on the song's percussion. It also has that New York NRG Club vibe. back to "Love Comes Quickly". First off the song clocked in at #59 on KROQ's YE list, second it's one of The Pet Shop Boy's best of mellow but NRGetic. Something about Neil Tennent's vocals always gave me the vision of him coasting up and down the dance floors looking for his next dance partner. very subtle but sure of himself vocals. Pet Shop Boys - SuburbiaFor the record this was KROQ's #1 song of 1986. The most interesting aspect of this song is the percussion. It's picture perfect early Italo Disco. It has that tropical exotic congos vibe. Not really my favorite percussion vibe, but its a perfect intro to what follows. Which is a simply gorgeous synth melody taking us into the realm of Synthpop heaven. Another top chart hit in Europe. Pet Shop Boys - Why Don't We Live Together (KROQ #91) This was a minor hit, but I loved the addition of Freestyle beats to this one. The melody could have been the new Sa-Fire or even Johnny O. Freestyle has a lot more European vibe than people realize. The main chorus melody from this song inspired Cy-Re's "Last Chance" ,and a few other Nancy Martinez songs. That's how innovative The Pet Shop Boys were. The Hooters - Day by DaySkipping some B-52's and on to some radio rock friendly party jam from the The Hooters. Love this band. This song and "..and We Danced' are probably the most hokiest ,but awesome songs I ever heard. This band did nothing in Europe, but was on top of the charts just as soon as I returned to U.S. soil. The Smiths - Bigmouth Strikes Again (KROQ #37) The Smiths - There Is a Light That Never Goes Out (KROQ #99) I would have loved to rank these two Smiths song as these, and ""hang The Dee jay"" are the ones I recall the most. "Bigmouth Strikes Again" does everything right with the guitarworks. A continuous guitar extravaganza that keeps the song going in a strong direction for start to finish. "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" is a song that I also knew but loved even more when Mikel Erentxun made it his own Spanish Rock 90's classic for the ages. New Order - ParadiseThis New Order song didn't make the KROQ list, but I always dug the bassline. It wasn't as synthpoppy but still retained the strength of a good New order song. 'Til Tuesday - What About LoveI remember this one as the second single after "Voices Carry". It was still extremely radio friendly and one of my favorite songs from the band. This time the melody and background synth beats in the verses struck me as the most classy aspect of the song. Ric Ocasek - True to You (KROQ #103) praise praise praise. Also I probably mentioned a 100 times before that this is basically a Cars song with all bands members ,but David Robinson present on instruments, so yeah...praise praise praise. Robert Palmer - I Didn't Mean to Turn You On (KROQ #88) Another one to make KROQ's top 106. i think we should rank the 1986 extras just because they are the songs that everyone actually remembers on the radio back then. By now Robert was not going to do away with his vogue cover girls fantasy band. I for one actually loved the idea that these chicks were the ones actually playing the music. This song here brought on the finesse fire with Robert Palmer's vocals. The song actually has a simple bassline but emits a really classy rhythm. Simple Minds - All the Things She Said (KROQ #69) Lucky enough we will be ranking more Simple Minds classic on the mainstream Rock. The Simple subtle melody here really is the strength of the song. Simple Minds always sounded great with female Backups. Wang Chung - Everybody Have Fun Tonight (KROQ #65) Really sucks that we didn't get to rank this one. Even KROQ recognized the Fun bomb this song was. Andy Taylor - Take It Easy (KROQ #97) looking to be the next Rick Springfield with this ultra Porock fire. You can never have too much Rick Springfield on the charts. I love this song and it would have been in my top 10. Could have bee the closest we got to ranking Night Ranger on Alt. That Gavin chart guy spoiled my fun again. Bananarama - Venus (KROQ #61) Let me start off by saying. Gavin chart guy. wherever you are? WTF? Everyone knows how much I loved Hi-NRG Bananarama phase. I would sell my Glam Metal vinyl collection if anyone sloted this song higher than me. Picture perfect pop to my ears. Erotic dancetronic percussion, Just the right amount of guitars, fast Dead Or Alive like NRG bassline, melodic Female vocal combinations. probably my favorite cover song ever. I put this one really high on that Billboard pop Rd as well. Belinda Carlisle - Mad About You This one didn't make the KROQ top 106, but still an amazing pop song. Belinda drops the beachnick punk vibe , for a mellow aesthetic melody on this song, but still shines a sparkling musical light on any chart with her lovely vocals. Belouis Some - ImaginationI vaguely recall this getting some airplay in France. One of the lesser known songs on Modern Rock airwaves, but if you dug the sophistipop sound of "Digging Your Scene" than you probably would slot this one side by side with my high top 30 rank as well. This one a bit of Roxy Music in it. ...to be continued

I'll be doing something I haven't done in a while for this set of extras - actually posting all of them individually! The album this song is on won the 1986 Grammy for Best Reggae Album, the only time a non-Jamaican act (they're British) won it. Save Black Music Steel Pulse
