Sent my list for '86 mainstream Rock last night. It isprobably the hardest list of songs I have had to rank in a rock forum so far. Coming up with a top 60 was hard enough cuz I had to leave one song out of the top 50. Then I had to leave one out of my top 40 and it got harder and harder as a neared the top 10. 1985 mainstream rock should be even more stellar. let's do some extras:Glen Burtnik - Little Red HouseThis was a first time listen that sounded like a blueprint for 1980's album rock. The chorus has that booming bass that emphasizes every other line in the lyrics. Used alot in anthemic rock songs. I like it. Billy Squier - Shot O' Love Melodic enough for Billy, but most of it sounds like it was written for Bryan Adams. Great fro Bryan , but a bit to simple for Billy. The chorus sounds like Billy Squier. He kinda lost that epic feel his songs had in the early 80's. Mickey Thomas - Stand in the FireMore movie soundtrack rock music. This song is just alright. They could have easily given it to Genesis. The percussion was the best part. Also never heard of this movie 'Youngblood', but I could shamelessly pimp out a great new song from Tokyo Motor Fist with the same name. Honeymoon Suite - What Does It Take"Feel It Again" got a whole lot more airplay. I like this song, but I used to think it was Loverboy. Canadian 80's Powerballads tend to have a similar emotion to them. Aretha Franklin - Jumpin' Jack FlashHere is a cover I didn't need from a movie I furthermore didn't need. I would rather prefer the original featured in "Nightshift". Ratt - DanceHere we go. Now we are getting to the monster jams. Love Ratt and Stephen Pearcy, and this is great song with that same dance vibe that "Round and Round" had, but Glam/Hair Metal hadn't yet caught fire on the charts. Bon Jovi really opened up the door for the genre and Atlantic Records should have waited a few more months and released 'Dancing Undercover" in 1987. As it is I charted this one and Cinderella "Nobody's Fool" in 1987 when rock platform was prept and ready for Glam. It was all about timing, and this would have been a really big hit in 1987. Joe Cocker - You Can Leave Your Hat OnJoe Cocker has terrible drunken like vocal tones, but this song did what it was meant to do in the movie. It's not a bad song and would have sounded way better with almost anyone else on the mic. I wasn't aloud to see 9½ Weeks, but I watched it anyway. Bryan Adams - Christmas TimeLove this song. I hadn't heard it till late last year around Christmas. The MV is from 2019, but I didn't know the song was from 1986. I knew there was a reason that song always struck me as 80's epic. This next set are all first time listens except "Shake Me". The Dream Academy - The Edge of ForeverThe band had a pleasant Sophistipop sound to their songs. I would have preferred to rank their songs in Modern Rock Rank Downs as I felt this sound fit better on that format. I think I like this one better than "Life In A Northern Town", but it still doesn't leave an everlasting scar on my listening pleasures. Huey Lewis & the News - Whole Lotta Lovin'This verses sound a bit like Bobby Day's "Rockin' Robin" which is why I like the song. The rest is the usual Huey Lewis and the News, but the chorus isn't that strong. My favorite aspect was Huey on Harmonca. Sorry Huey , but Bobby Day's original has a better melody. Yes - Hold onDidn't see the point of this live version. The original did little to entice me. A little too Proggy for me. I always preferred Asia anyway. Cinderella - Shake MeYou could tell by the music videos that this genre was being prepped to become the next big thing on the charts. I heard this one after "Nobody's Fool", but I do remember the MV on MTV all the time. A good song to introduce the band to the Rock charts. i wasn't really hard into Metal til '87, but I do really enjoy this song whenever it pops up. Phantom, Rocker & Slick f/ Keith Richards - My MistakeThe Stones meet the Stray Cats. Earl Slick sounds great, Elvira looks great. I think I like this one a whole lot better than Brian Seltzer's song from this Rd. Kim Mitchell - Patio LanternsI barely remember this guy's song "Go For Soda". This song doesn't sound like anything I would flip for in '86. Kim has good strong vocals. Much like .38 Special style, but good vocals don't make for a good song. Danny Wilde - Isn't It EnoughMore Heartland. If it wasn't delivered by John Cougar Mellencamp vocals I really didn't care for much heartland. On a different note I did love and charted Danny's single "Body To Body" much stronger song with a killer chorus. Models - Cold FeverThe title track was the one I remember. This one was pretty good. Did I already compare them to INXS? The added brass and guitar works give them an early INXs vibe. I still prefer the Titletrack.

This whole set is actually really good. I would have rather raked some of these songs by these acts instead of the ones they actually scored in the YE list.. Even Neil Young surprised me.
Rush - Territories Rush sound a bit too proggy for me thats year. This and the other song we ranked are not exactly 'Moving Pictures" RUSH. The song has some interesting guitarworks, but it needed way more work to be something memorable. The lyrics also had that (I really don't care to sing along too) vibe as well.
The Hooters - Where Do the Children Go This is another well known hit for the band. Slower Hooters, but still good. Banjos and everything.
The Call - Everywhere I Go This would have been a better song to rank. It has that fast bassline melody I like in Modern Rock songs. This style always sounds more Spanish Rock ,and 80's to me. I usually rank songs with these faster bassline higher than the broken bass ones, unless its anthem Rock bass like Loverboy/Def Leppard style. Anyway this song is really good for a Download/check.
Marillion - Lady Nina this song would fall into progressive album rock. I'm not too familiar with this band outside of "Kayleigh". This song is just alright. I fail to pick up on a really catchy peak point. Not even in the chorus. If I had to say something positive it would be the synthesizers towards the end of the song. Those had the apex vibe. Unfortunately the song fades away before the peak is reached.
Bob Seger - Tightrope I like Bob Segar in Album Rock mode so much better than his ranch music. This song for instance really brings out his vocal gruff and it even emphasizes those Steve Winwood like synths. A little Styx vibe. Maybe used a bit like the intro of "Blue Collar Man"? This song would have been great on the Heavy Metal Animation movie soundtrack.
Billy Joel - Modern Woman I like this song, but maybe sounds a little too Top 40 for this RD. Great instrumentation production. The synth inserts feel a little silly at times, like out of place, but would fit nicely on a Beverly Hills Cop soundtrcak.
Neil Young - Weight of the World Sounds like Neil wasn't always trying to be an older version of Nirvana. His vocals also sounded way different. This song is another one I really enjoyed. A little proggy ,but still album rock enough like a Joe Walsh jam. Another missed opportunity where I could have slotted a Neil Young song in my top half.
The Cars - I'm Not the One Gotta love The Cars re releasing their 1982 ballad ,and taking it top 40. This song is very simple in percussion and synths, but still sounds so hauntingly beautiful with Ric's vocals. That chorus shines so bright especially with that progressive Synth chord. I say progressive ,because it has the scent of a Yes/Asia song. The Cars are super popular on these RDs so I'm sure my top 15 rank for this song would have given it a high slot.

Joni Mitchell - Good Friends This song was good. I can't recall anything from her, but this had a proper Sophistipop meets Top 40 poprock vibe. Thought I heard Michael McDonald in there too.
Pete Townshend - Secondhand Love Already I can say that this should have been the Pete Townshend song we ranked. It fits his vocals better. It doesn't really go anywhere melody wise, but has a decent bluesy feel. It definitely sounds more The Who than the other two we ranked.
Journey - Raised on Radio I didn't really flip over the songs on 'Raised On The Radio". they were not bad Album rock songs, but it almost felt like they regressed compared to the direction of Frontiers. The melodies and guitars were playing it really safe for top 40 audience and the songs lacked that edge a Journey song takes you through. Also they felt rushed ,and you don't rush a good Journey. With a title like "Raised On The Radio", and it being the title track one wishes this had a more epic sound to it. "Stone In Love" part 2 is what we should gotten. Instead they all sounded like tracks left off the 'Frontiers' album.
Asia - Too Late Whoever uploaded the song put the wrong album thumbnail. This song is from Astra not the debut album. This song was much better than "Go", but still too a bit simplistic in the chorus. I like the song, because its more than the chorus. That breakdown should have been extended. That's the part I really liked.
.38 Special - Heart's on Fire Always loved these Southern Rock bands. This was straight out Album Guitar Rock. Good song with strong vocals. I hope the band does good on this Rd?
The Del Fuegos - I Still Want You I don't usually go for this band's vocals, but if I listen beyond that I can actually pick up a little of The Doors Roadhouse vibe in the verses and intro. The rest of the song did little for me.
Starship - Tomorrow Doesn't Matter Tonight I remember this one as a big top 40 hit. It's amazing how much this style has inspired today's Retro Wave vibe. I liked this song, but this "St. Elmo's Fire" style was quickly becoming the blueprint for late 80's rock. That is why Hair/Glam metal had to the save the day. At least give rock a different sound.
Golden Earring - Quiet Eyes Always wondered what happened to this band after "Twilight Zone"? This is actually pretty good for that Progressive Altrock sound. Also has a European sound in the the way the guitars are played. In all honestly this is my favorite out of tonight's bunch. Download/Check.

Squeezing a few more extras in before showtime. That Giuffria song was a huge let down. What a regress from the debut album. Jackson Browne - Lives in the BalanceJackson Browne certainly has good vocals, but this song didn't work for me. These songs with political themes or world themes whatever they are don't get me in the right mood to listen to music. If I want to know this stuff I watch the news. Bob Dylan f/ Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Band of the HandThe music isn't so bad. Got the Tom Petty and Heartbreakers vibe, I'm not a fan of Bob Dylan's vocals at all. Twisted Sister - Leader of the PackI used to like this one quite a bit. It hasn't aged well with me, but I still enjoy Dee Snider's vocals. I listen to it now days, and think why the hell did they cover this song? It made them sound like a parody of themselves. Without my full support I feel this song would have fared rather poorly on this Rd. Like bottom 10 poorly. Triumph - Tears in the RainThis one was rather cool to rediscover. It didn't really sound like 80's album rock Triumph at all. Had more of an 80's Metal sound to it. Like Dokken, but once they added the synths it went back to Foreigner maybe even Rainbow '84 level. Easily my favorite song from this first batch. John Fogerty - HeadlinesThis is the one that sounded most like his CCR days. Funny enough it's the song I enjoyed the most. Still has that "this bud's for you" vibe, but it pulls through with that good guitar vibe. Way better than the ones we ranked. Giuffria - I Must Be DreamingI'm a huge fan of their breakthrough hit "Call To The Heart". David Glen Eisley has amazing octane in his vocal tones, and they had a strong Steve Perry feel to them. The song had a strong epic tone to it with heartfelt lyrics. One of my favorites from 1985 ,and a song that paved the way for the later Whitesnake/Winger powerballads. I didn't recall this particular song. I didn't even know they had an album in '86,, but this "I Must Be Dreaming" had none of the heart or even emotion that "Call To The Heart" had. This sounded like Survivor filler material. The kind of song that makes it onto a Karate Kid soundtrack. Probably one of the few songs with this 80's powerballad vibe that I strongly dissapprove of. I'm going to go preview this album to see if there is anything worth saving, but in the meantime compare this spinless powerballad to the real thing which I hope we get to rank in '85. John Lennon - ImagineI mean the song is epic. Studio or live. I just don't see why the charts would have any use for it in 1986 other than as recurrent on rock format radio. Pete Townshend - Barefootin'Seems Pete was all over the place with his musical vibes in '86. Not a bad song. It actually smacks in the brass department. looks like Pete is dancing on hot coals. I would have loved to see Pete do a cameo with Huey Lewis and The News. **last set. John Waite - If Anybody Had a HeartStarting off with a monster rock ballad. I'm a huge John Waite fan as I've shown on past rank downs. This song rocked, and also featured a lot of strong emotion in his vocals. I used to hear it everywhere, but it never became the big hit I wished it had become. Easy top 15 for me on any rock list. Eddie Money - We Should Be SleepingAnother of my favorite 80's rockers. This song is arena rock fun. It isn't the best on a Eddie Money discography, but his vocals bring it up a few notches. Steve Winwood - Take It as It ComesSound quality on that MV sounds shit. You can appreciate the song more here. www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CPdeKaqPm4. Anyway this song is good on a Steve Winwood level. Kinda hard to choose which of his songs are better than others. It has all the usually Steve Winwood ingredients. You can pretty much pick any three from his discography and still have a good listen. INXS - Kiss the Dirt (Falling Down the Mountain)A bit more of a raw sound for the band. IMOP this band's sound peaked when the brass was the premier aspect of their music. I still like this song, because of vocals and melodies. Genesis - The Last DominoThis remastered version you chose really gives the song depth. I remember liking this one because it sounded more like something KLOS would play. The other singles from the album were good too, but more for top 40, while this one had more of that "Abacab" vibe to it. Proggy? yes, but also epic. "Abacab" the extended version is still my favorite Genesis song ever. Dokken - The HunterAnother great extra. I loved Dokken's heavy metal style. Their songs had more of a European Metal feel to them. Their melodies glimmered in the sheen of Don Dokken's vocals, and you really got the feel of a hunt with the pounding bassline in the background. Like a tiger ready to move in for the kill. I loved "In My Dreams" even more. Van Halen - Summer NightsThe first Van Hagar album had some fire in it. No skippers on the record. "Love Walks In" might be my least favorite, but it was still decent. This one has some of that Eddie Van Halen groove. great chorus too. John Lennon - Come TogetherAnother classic we have all heard a billion times. This song is such a bulls eye, but this version pales because it's missing the other three Beatles. This song has an even bigger meaning for me because its the one that tuned me into Aerosmith. I actually thought it was theirs' when I saw the Sgt. Peppers... movie. Years later I found out it was not theirs', but its still my favorite version. also on a funny side. Comments on Youtube say that's Michael Jackson on piano. LOL! That's rich.
