SLEDGEHAMMER vs. LAND OF CONFUSION Which song will win the 1986 Mainstream Rock Year-End rankdown? Will Genesis take the title or will the band's alumnus Peter Gabriel come out on top? Both songs were among the lowest standard deviations in the rankdown with one having the 2nd lowest and the other the 4th lowest SD. Each of these songs received 6 top 10 rankings. Both received their fair share of top 20s as well with one getting 6 more and the other 5 more. In the end the 2 songs were only separated by 17 points. Both Red and newpower still have their favorite in the game along with myself. Who among us will get to see their #1 emerge victorious? Find out in a few minutes...

Your Love would’ve easily been my #1 here, such an anthemic chorus that never fails to put me in a good mood

That concludes the 1986 Mainstream Rock Chart Year-End rankdown! Thanks again to everyone who sent in a ranking and participated in this rankdown. You guys are the ones that make all of this fun and worthwhile. As good as this year was for rock radio the best is yet to come as we go back even further with these retro rankdowns. I personally cannot wait to get started on listening to the playlists for the rock chart rankdowns of 1985! Should be lots of fun! {STATHAMMER} ![](https://i.imgur.com/0N3hTif.png)

sledgehammer as a euphemism for a penis doesn’t seem very appropriate...drill or piston sure, but a hammer? that doesn’t sound very pleasurable
still, an awesome song from a nearly perfect album & amazing music video
...brought to us by a top-notch host who provided us with a fabulous rankdown

{JUST A WORD WALL, ONE STEP AWAY FROM YOU}#10: Well, the points difference between the last couple of reveals makes me regret ranking this so high now. This is the weakest of the singles from these next couple of years for Simple Minds. I would assume "Don't You" tops this, anyway. #9: Freaking finally, a perfecto! I thought this might be the one to get me there. I'd feel more confident about their upcoming songs having a chance to top this if the coming years weren't loaded. #8: Why the ever-living hell did I rank this outside of the top 30 when we ranked the '86 Hot 100? I made some...choices in that RD, but that was, easily, the weirdest. #7: "1 6" Jesus. #6: I was worried about this potentially being a #1 contender due to a lack of tanking. Thanks for proving me wrong, crazi. #5: I love this song, but I only had 15 spots available for my top 15, and geez, was the top 15 stacked this time in comparison to most of these Mainstream Rock lists. #4: ...crap, "Higher Love" is going to win, isn't it #3: I stand corrected.
Not only do I love this top based on the quality of the songs, I love this top two because it's Gabriel vs. Collins. That is beautiful.
#2: This song rules so hard. I was really, really, really, REALLY torn between ranking this or "Shot in the Dark" at #2. I figured that the latter needed the help more, so I put it there. On one hand, I was proven right about it needing the help more. On the other hand...crap, I would have had a perfect top two if I had put this at #2 instead. #1: I've given my thoughts on "Sledgehammer" multiple times, so I'm not going to repeat myself here. I do have one thing to say, though...and I think we're going to need to break out of the word wall for it. #1: rowellfarm490, you are not the king of these rankdowns for nothing. As always, thanks for doing awesome works with these rankdowns as a host. Like you, holy crap, I'm so excited for future Mainstream Rock rankdowns. 1985 looks good, too, but once you get to 1984 on, holy crap.

Thanks rowellfarm490 for another great rankdown. Great to see so many deserving songs do so well. Ozzy! Big Country! Icehouse! Simple Minds (the better one - ATSS)! Seems to me that had Red Rain not received one major tanking, we could've seen a different #2. Looking forward to 1985

10. Sanctify Yourself - Simple MindsGreat way to start off the top 10. Definitely one of the ones I was putting in my top 30. A little repetitious in the chorus. meaning its a bit simple, but the rest of the song is Simple Minds gold. I know "Alive and Kicking" has got to higher than this, with "Don't You..." being a a strong #1 contender for '85. Well see cause we do have those that like to tank the big top 40 hits. 9. Don't Get Me Wrong - P retendersThis is a good Pretender's song. They started off really strong in the early 80's than slowly mellowed their sound a bit. I'm more for the song "Tattooed Love Boys", but I can also flip for "Brass In Pocket". I wouldn't consider this song top 10 Pretenders. Not when we have "Middle Of The Road" and others to look forward to. Hopefully I can get a Pretenders song on one of my top 10 lists soon enough? 8. Life in a Northern Town - The Dream AcademyThis one has a nice Dreampop melody. Not sure what I think about it on this list. I liked it for Pop, and I think that is where I first heard it too. Never once heard this on KLOS or KMET, I'm positive I will upgrade this song higher than most of you on my Modern Rock list. 7. In Your Eyes - Peter GabrielThat is some #1 you guys chose. Did not see that coming. It's a nice song to mellow out to. This song is great for Modern Rock. It even made my top 50 there, but it really lost its luster among this set of rock's heavy hitters. i still like it, but not at all for this list. 6. What You Need - INXS For me this was INXS at their peak. The brass was at all time high in pop and this band already had it incorporated to their music, so it sounded so natural on this song. Easy top 20 for me. I have high hopes for "Original Sin" too, and in case you forgot that is my favorite INXs song ever. 5. Your Love - The OutfieldAnother easy top 20 for me. Glad to see they made the top 5 with their best song. 4. Red Rain - Peter Gabrieltalk about sticking out like a sore thumb. I just never really liked this particular song. I gave it a #63 on the last RD, because I really wasn't too familiar with songs off that list. As it is I put a lot of first time listens above that one there too. Anyway I understand " Sledghammer" was a huge hit, but I hope to see this much enthusiasm when we rank "Shock The Monkey"3. Higher Love - Steve WinwoodWhat can I say I was a top 40 kid in the 80's. This song right here is 100% melodic fire. I thought it was funny seeing this one on the Modern Rock RD, but I gave it a high rank anyway. I do remember Rock format playing this one all the time. It probably the least guitar oriented you'll see me get in my Mainstream Rock rds, but it is my favorite Steve Winwood song too. 2. Land of Confusion - GenesisGreat song. Like already mentioned this song gets a killer music video. The band's muppets look F'ed up . but that's ok, because the song rocks. This song is great. Now all I need if for everyone of you to promise to put "Abacab" in your top 10's for 1982.1. Sledgehammer - Peter GabrielSo you guys actually do put songs by the same artist side by side. I've never done that, but I think I might have to for the "Hearbeat City" Singles. Not my choice for #1 on this list of songs but its still a rock radio classic. Isn't this song about wanting to bang a chick? Didn't think you guys would upgrade sex theme songs? oh well I had fun anyway and that's all that counts. Great year and great list of songs. Special thinks to rowellfarm490 for extras and music videos. Much appreciate the hard work and effort.

#10
This shares basically the same strengths as their other hit this year, but it gets a higher rank from me thanks to that keyboard lead-in to the chorus and probably the fact that I haven't heard it as much. Two worthy top 20 songs from Simple Minds this year.
#9
This one caught me by surprise as I'm generally not a huge fan of the Pretenders; their very straight-forward style often feels too plain to me. Here though, they found a captivating melody with plenty of charm, and Chrissie Hynde delivered one of her best vocal performances.
#8
This was another one that took forever to rank. The production and songwriting style are so intensely sophisti-pop that the song almost feels like a caricature of the sound. And yet, there's an indescribable dreamy mood to the music and vocals here that I'm not sure I've heard in any other song. It's a unique experience to be certain.
#7
A beautiful ballad from Peter Gabriel with lush production, what's not to like? And yet, it's only my third favorite of his hits this year.
#6
This track ranked 2 spots higher on the rankdown than on it's highest submission. I guess that's the sort of accomplishment you can pull off when you've got one of the best grooves in '80s pop. Easily one of the most listenable songs in this year's top 100.
#5
I own this album, and to be honest, I think I kind of burned myself out on this track, which is why it ranked so low on my list. Of course, to burn yourself out on a track like that, you have to willingly listen to it so much in the first place, and the strong melody and great chorus hook on this song will certainly give you a reason to.
#4
Another slow Gabriel track, although this time with a darker, heavier style. Very heartfelt vocals here, and a very appropriate atmosphere.
#3
This is the one of the few times - perhaps the only time - you'll see me put Steve Winwood in the upper half. The bright chorus, good beat, and slightly faster than usual tempo give this track a vivacity that I usually find absent in Winwood tracks.
#2
Very nice to see this at the number two spot. Land of Confusion is the best track from the Invisible Touch album in my opinion - it has a slight sophistication and a darker tinge to it that makes it stand out amongst the more conventional relationship songs that dominate most of the album. Not sure how a song can spend 30 weeks on the chart in this era without making it to the top 10 though.
#1
Not too surprising that this one won out; it's an excellent pop track that had a huge base of appeal, hitting #1 on the album rock, Hot 100, and dance charts, while also getting plenty of alternative play. I'd like to have seen Genesis take it all, but I'm okay with their ex-singer getting a #1.

15. All the Things She Said (77): I've never been a big fan of this song. I like the instrumental, but not the melody -at all. 14. Silent Running (1): It was very hard to choose my top 10. Seriously any song had equivalent strengths to take the crown. In the end I opted for this gem. A hit back home, and personal chart-topper, with unique, rich instrumental and vibe, strong vocals by Paul Carrack, and solid lyrics. A song that still makes me stop to pay attention to it. Great representative of 80s uniqueness. 13. Tonight She Comes (3): One of my favorite Cars songs. A big hit back home -one of the top songs of the Summer- and a personal chart topper. I love the instrumental, including the guitar in the bridge, and the synths and drums that take the energy to a high level throughout the song, as well as RIc's warm vocals and the melodic background vocals. It may not reach the heights of some of their previous hits, but this still sounds super fun and strong to me. In my top 5 Cars songs for sure. 12. Fall on Me (16): This was my favorite discovery in this RD. It sounds ahead of its time, much more 90s than 80s, but with strong melody and vocals that captured my attention strongly. 11. No Promises (58): Nice sophistipop production and pretty good vocals, but again I'm not a big fan of the melody. I like the pre-chorus, but the chorus was a letdown. EB and Crazy are miles better than this to me. 10. Sanctify Yourself (39): This is much better than ATTSS, but still not at the level of A&K or DYFAM. The melody in the pre-chorus and chorus is good enough, as is the vocal energy, and the synth pop-rock style. It was just not as strong for me to make my top 1/3. 9. Don't Get Me Wrong (13): A big hit in '86 and their second most played song overall back home. It also reached the top of my personal chart, and it's one of my favorite Pretenders song -just behind Back on the Chain Gang. Great melody and instrumental that brings back lots of great memories. It's faster than their usual stuff, but has the same nostalgic vibe, musical strength and solid vocal delivery as earlier hits. 8. Life in a Northern Town (63): Another song I like quite a bit and I could've ranked higher in a modern rock, pop, or AC rank down. Don't complain at seeing it top 10, though, as I think it's got a great unique and strong melody and instrumental. 7. In Your Eyes (5): Yes! A great ballad powerfully interpreted by PG -with effective backing vocals. Very strong, almost new-age instrumental and melody that make it one of my favorite PG songs. 6. What You Need (9): A big hit back home and in mu personal chart, with good recurrent airplay. It's one of my top 5 INXS songs. I love the rich instrumental (especially that sax!), the compact and unique d production and Michael's strong vocals. 5. Your Love (2): One of my favorite 80s pop-rock songs. It reached the top of my personal chart and was a big hit back home, too. It's gotten pretty good recurrent airplay, and I still listen to it often. Concise song that punches instrumental and vocal strength, and solid melody in a few minutes. Great to see it top 5! 4. Red Rain (25): I like this song a lot, but felt it was a bit more modern than mainstream rock. 3. Higher Love (8): Great result! My favorite SW song. A minor hit back home and a personal top 5. Very strong instrumental, melody and vocals (including Chaka Khan's background vocals). 2. Land of Confusion (12): This was practically a flop in pop stations back home --but the video was popular. I loved both video and song, and thus it became their second song off this album to top my personal chart. I love the stronger energy, harder instrumental, the super catchy melody especially in the chorus. Although I like Touch a bit more, I ranked this higher because it fits this ranking much better. Despite my relatively lower ranking, I'm quite happy to see it as the runner-up in this RD, as I was very close to put this in my top 10, too. 1. Sledgehammer (15): Another song I was very close to put in my top 10. Great instrumental, melody, vocals. Quite an eclectic production that is a great representative of the eclecticness of the 80s. Thanks rowellfarm490 for another great RD!!
