Unfortunately for tim, "Twang Thang" is indeed our first song to exit, after he just mentioned that he would have liked to see it escape the bottom 3... At least his prediction that this would be the most polarizing song was correct! In reality, this song wasn't really set to be our last place until the final list from castleoblivion26 came in and TIED it with the most consistent last place contender.....which then won the tie due to the fact that it is somebody's #1!!! Nothing like starting this rankdown off with a bang Anyway, "Twang Thang" has always been the most obvious example of "filler" on this album in my opinion. That is not necessarily THAT bad of a condemnation, because Terri is one of the most consistent albums artists, and to me her "filler" never actually approaches the irredeemable places that it does for many other artists. But something had to go there, and there were actually five of us who felt it belonged in last. The most of any song on this album.

And there is the aforementioned most consistent last-place contender that ended up being saved by the fact that it was someone's #1!!!! Unfortunately for gardyfan , he is the one who has to suffer that loss... You can tell how close these results were at the bottom, however, because castleoblivion26 ranking this in his bottom 2 instead of last place gave it the boost it needed to tie with "Twang Thang" and thereby escape last place completely 😂 I think "Hold Your Horses" has always felt like album filler to me just like "Twang Thang" (again, by Terri's standards that does NOT speak to a lack of quality!!). The breakneck pace of the song makes it a really fun listen, so I am not at all surprised to see some high ranks. To me the melody just does not stand out as having the mass appeal of most of the rest of the songs on this album. I think it's the type of song that sounds like it would be better in a live setting and loses a bit of its energy in translation to the studio.

I'm going to go ahead and pause there for a spell, since I know gardyfan will want me to cancel the whole rankdown I'm going to go dive into the top 10 of New Country Releases! Then I'll come back here in a little bit.

So other than tim and .indulgecountry regarding "Twang Thang".... do you guys just not like fun? I always loved the energy this song had really didn't peg it for the bottom. "Hold Your Horses" I also think is a lot of fun and I love the pace of the song especially in the chorus but I can see how this may not appeal as much so not as surprised here!

In my opinion Terri pretty much always nails the energy level of nearly everything she touches, with very few exceptions! So that is definitely not an issue here, haha. In the case of this song, for me personally the chorus melody just doesn't quite hit the ear as smoothly as a lot of her uptempos do. With this song, I feel like the melody of the higher parts of the chorus, "twang thang" and "deep pang", tends to be a little grating sometimes. Maybe it's that her twang sounds slightly put-on right there, or maybe I just don't like the way that the melody is shaped. It does tend to feel kinda repetitive. Either way, Terri tends to have a real smooth, somehow simultaneously bad-ass yet elegant mastery of uptempo melodies, so it's rare for one to not hit immediately for me. But, while stuff like "Poor Poor Pitiful Me", "Emotional Girl", "You Do Or You Don't", etc. all just are absorbed in the ear effortlessly, this one doesn't sink in quite as easily. That was all very abstract and probably made only partial sense, but either way, Terri is pretty much always perfect, so even a tiny bit of gratingness is essentially a nail in the coffin for an otherwise okay song 😂 I'm going to try to finish this tomorrow!!! Hope y'all are ready for more!

I'm so sorry for the delay, y'all! These first few weeks of the school year are always just so busy, with random tasks that you have to deal with now in order to make the entire school year go smoothly... That being said, I'm gonna go ahead and finish this album up right now! Thank you so much for your patience, as per usual. Let's dive in and see what is truly the best of yet another incredible album from Terri

"Keeper of the Flame" is a beautiful song! But out of all the ballads on this album, this is the one that feels the least like a potential hit, imo. So I am not at all surprised to see it leaving already. Nevertheless, the message is strong, and Terri's vocal hits hard! Definitely one I enjoy revisiting from time to time.

Our uptempo "flame" song bows out right after the ballad "flame" song... Once again we have a tie, and once again it is gardyfan's high rank that gave it the tie-breaker! Unfortunately, that means he has now lost his #1 and #2... I love seeing some of these random songs getting love, as Terri truly does have some incredible album tracks throughout her career!! "Neon Flame" is another characteristically sassy uptempo that is perfect for Terri. Literally nobody would quite be able to match her energy and personality on songs like this. A simple romper about a new lover being jealous of an old fling that they run into in a bar, this song is delightfully country, and I could see it being a hit. Although admittedly I love nearly everything else on the album just a tad more, hence my low-ish rank...

"Something in the Water" seems to be the "forgotten" single of this album, as it only peaked at #39 in Canada and didn't chart in the US. (I don't know if it was not released here or if it completely failed to chart.) Either way, it's no surprise to me that this would be the first single out, and not really a contender for the top 5 like singles normally are. That doesn't mean it's not a great song though! I think the melody is great, and Terri's vocal perfectly sells it, and it sounds like it could have been a hit even though it never really was.
It did make it all the way up to #29 in the singles rankdown though, so it is not exactly disliked on Pulse despite its low profile!

Ugh, there goes what should have been the RUNAWAY highest album track... This is easily within the top 5 catchiest non-singles of her entire career. Absolutely the hit that got away on this album! That chorus is absolute money, and I swear I have had it stuck in my head every day for like 15 years now, lmao. The fact that this was top 4 until the final list is just dumb. Terri's albums are so strong that there are always going to be more than enough deserving songs for the top 5, but this one having to miss is just incorrect. That being said, this is one that I could see potentially doing sneakily well in her album tracks rankdown once all the distracting hits are out of the picture, so I'm still excited for that

Beating out "You Do Or You Don't" by ONE POINT for the top 5, we lose the fan-favorite ballad "Any Woman". And I honestly wouldn't have wanted to see this one miss the top 5 either, so I definitely don't begrudge it that victory!! Terri just has a knack for making ballads that are somehow super catchy despite having slow melodies. It's why I have always loved her ballads so much even though she's not nearly as rangy of a vocalist as someone like Martina or Reba. "Any Woman" gets stuck in my head from beginning to end, and I cannot get enough of it! I could see it being a hit, and if "You Do Or You Don't" couldn't be the highest album track, I could have definitely been happy with this one as well!
At yet with this loss, "Not What I Wanted To Hear" is now the highest remaining album track....

And there's the highest album track, bowing out now to leave us with the three "hits" of the album as the top 3! (In quotation marks for the title track's sake, LMAO!) "Not What I Wanted To Hear" was a hell of a contender, unlike tim's predictions for it! This song was actually our most prominent #4 contender, so despite my disappointment that "You Do Or You Don't" lost out on top 4 at the last minute, there is no question that this one is still deserving. At least the battle for highest album track was quite intense, as this one finished only 1 point higher than "Any Woman" and two points higher than "You Do Or You Don't"! I have always found this one to be really catchy, but personally I don't think it is on quite the same level as either YDOYD or AW. Still easily my 3rd-favorite album track though, so I'm not exactly disappointed to see it beat those two, especially since the battle was so close.

Our title track bows out next, which is absolutely no surprise considering what it was up against, lmao. "Just The Same" is not nearly the hit that "Poor, Poor Pitiful Me" and "Emotional Girl" were. While both of those were top 10 hits in the US (and #1 hits in Canada!!), JTS was only a #49 hit in the US... Although it did hit the top 20 in Canada, at #16, so it still did its job in her homeland! Unfortunately this was only #43 in her singles rankdown, so I am actually really impressed at the way this grabbed onto the top 3 and never relinquished its hold!
My goodness, there is just something about this one... She freaking ATE this vocal, in a way that I have never heard from her before or since! There is something almost electrifying about the way she sings this one. That's always my biggest takeaway from this song, lol. Just complete and total awe at her vocal. It's a shame it couldn't have managed to be a bigger hit, but then again it would be a tall task for ANYTHING to be remembered when it shares an album with two hits like "Emotional Girl" and PPPM, regardless of the artist!

Terri's 2nd and 3rd #1 hits (in Canada), respectively, conclude our rankdown, as I am sure literally everyone expected! (Except for maybe nathanalbright, with the weirdest last place rank anyone has ever had in a rankdown??!) "Emotional Girl" just has this pure, unbridled energy that I can never get enough of. I knew it would be a tough sell for a victory up against one of Terri's signature hits in PPPM, but this actually managed to remain competitive a bit longer than I expected it would! But of course, "Poor, Poor Pitiful Me" was the OBVIOUS winner of this album, as it deserves because it is undoubtedly one of Terri's most popular songs, despite being a cover! I would even argue that this version has gone on to be even more popular than the Linda Ronstadt original, although that may just be my bias based on the time period in which I was born... With a whopping EIGHT people putting this at #1, and everyone else putting it top 5, there was no question how this rd was going to end. Thank you all for participating and/or following along! I'll get the next album launched shortly :)

“Just the Same” is easily one of the greatest vocals, if not the greatest, Terri Clark ever put on record. Wish it could’ve made the Top 2 spot tbh.
