No surprises yet on the bottom five! I really liked the two older Christmas songs but knew they'd be some of the first to go.
I'm just hoping my #1 can atleast make top 20. 😓🙏

We kick off our next set of reveals with our first non-Christmas elimination from her pre-Greatest Hits phase. "It's My Time" was the fourth and final single from her Emotion album, and was a decently large hit, peaking at #11 when all was said and done. This one has been a frequent concert staple of hers through the years ever since then. On several of her tours throughout the 2000s, this was used as the opening number for the entire show!
And yet, despite nearly making the top 10, being used as her concert opener, and being her most recent hit at the time, this song was left off of her Greatest Hits album, and seemed to be forgotten by the masses rather quickly.
I never thought this was a great choice for a single. This is one of those songs where even I can acknowledge that the vocal arrangement is a bit much, and it can become grating rather quickly if you listen to it too often. This album was just FILLED with single potential too, as I think "Make Me Believe", "Anything's Better Than Feelin' The Blues", "I Ain't Goin' Nowhere", etc. all could have been huge successes at radio!! So while the live show potential was there, I think that other songs could have been better choices for radio.

The Timeless album takes its first loss here, with the massive flop of a second single "I Still Miss Someone" bowing out at #44. This album may be one of Martina's best selling projects, but I think it was unnecessary to treat it like a regular album era. Cover song are usually a pretty tough sell for radio. "Rose Garden" limping into the top 20 was pretty remarkable, but after that, it is my opinion that the only song that stood any chance whatsoever would have been "'Til I Can Make It On My Own", because that song has quite a bit more fan hype than anything else on the album. Instead they went with "I Still Miss Someone", and it barely scraped the charts.
Martina sounds amazing, of course, and it is always nice to hear more from Dolly. However, I have always found this one to be pretty boring. Older country in general is not really my thing, so even though these ladies do a great job with it, this song is still absolutely no comparison to the rest of her modern mainstream career.

45. It’s my time (48): I didn’t like the melody that much. But the worst offender was her vocals in the chorus. It was simply too much to bear. After a couple of listens I didn’t want to hear again that big “it’s my tIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIiiiiIIIIIIme” quite a contrast fo most of the songs in this RD.
44. I still miss someone (45): I’m a big fan of Dolly’s so I was excited at this collaboration. I’ve never heard the original, so sorry for any disrespect... I actually like the traditional sound, but the melody of the song was a bit of a bore, and the production was just too flat. It was a bit forgettable for this list.

We take a jump to the very early years of Martina's career with "That's Me" bowing out at #43! This was her second single of all time, and also her first big flop, as it fell off the charts after peaking at #43 despite her debut single nearly making the top 20. I'm not sure whose idea it was to release this to radio, because Martina can't have had too much control over her career at that time, but it seems like a really boneheaded move for a label executive to make... I mean, it's a great song, but has no hit potential whatsoever imo. If they wanted to go the ballad route, something like "A Woman Knows" would have probably been MUCH better received by radio (it's also much more indicative of the sonic direction Martina would be going as an artist). Still, despite the lack of radio friendliness, I do like this one a lot! The lyrics portray two people after a breakup in a really clever way with all the descriptions of "that's me" vs. "that's him" giving the listener a very realistic and emotional glimpse into the lives of these people. Don't let my bottom 3 rank fool you! Her career's just that strong :) Most of her singles are MUCH better than this, but I do enjoy the song.

Another song from Martina's early career had some rankdown trouble coming on, so we got rid of it at #42. "Heart Trouble" is a driving '90s country shuffle, that unfortunately sounds kind of out of place coming from Martina. She came to be known for slick, big-voiced anthems like "Independence Day", "Where Would You Be", "Concrete Angel", etc., which is like the exact opposite of this song. Her material has always stayed closer to her country roots than some of her peers like Shania Twain and Faith Hill, but was never really this type of country.
Also, this song gets a TON of flack from Martina's fans, because it was the followup single to "Independence Day", but it was the WRONG followup single to "Independence Day"... "Strangers" is way more of a favorite, for the fans as well as Martina herself! After the controversy surrounding "Independence Day", Martina wanted "Strangers" to be her next single, but the label basically told her "Nah, we're gonna play it safe and go with "Heart Trouble". She felt so confident that "Strangers" was the hit that got away, that she included it on her Greatest Hits album in 2001! Of course, "Heart Trouble" was nowhere to be seen ;)
I will say, this song was actually not as much of a flop as I thought! I just noticed it nearly made the top 20 on the country charts. So I guess for all intents and purposes, it was a successful single! Definitely didn't do anything long-term for her career, however. It gets pretty much zero recurrent play.

I should probably mention, "Strangers" was almost released as the 5th single from her Greatest Hits album after "Concrete Angel" peaked, but the label once again decided it would be a better idea to move on to new music rather than spending more time on a hits album. I mean, it makes sense, because 5 singles is unheard of for a Greatest Hits era. Her getting four huge career-changing hits out of the new material on her Hits album is already unprecedented!
It's just kinda funny that the song got passed up twice!

"Strangers" was nearly sent to radio twice, as bboat11 mentioned. I think it actually had an adds date, and was pulled at the last second for "This One's For The Girls".

We learn to let go of the lead single from her 2005 country classics covers album Timeless to round out our bottom 10! With this reveal, we have also officially eliminated our first REAL album era!!
"Rose Garden" is a song made famous by Lynn Anderson, but has also come to be a fairly well-known song for Martina. It made the top 20 in 2005, which is pretty incredible for a note-for-note cover of an old song, and speaks to Martina's star power at the time more than anything else imo. To this day, it remains a live favorite for her and her band, as I do not think I have ever seen a setlist of hers since 2005 that didn't have this song on it! That might seem odd to a casual fan, but it makes sense when you think about who Martina is as an artist. She has HUGE respect for the classics, and her Timeless album was very important to her. She is very conscious about honoring those who came before her, so she seems to always do a couple covers in the middle of her show, usually from Timeless. "Rose Garden" makes sense, as the album's big hit and also one of the more high-energy songs on the album. And then she'll follow it up with something more random, like "Help Me Make It Through The Night", or, like last summer when I saw her, "Today I Started Loving You Again".
So this song is not held in very high regard on Pulse, but it does have quite a bit of legs still in terms of its impact on her actual career.

44. I Still Miss Someone 41. (I Never Promised You A) Rose Garden Album Tracks: 'Til I Can Make It On My Own
"'Til I Can Make It On My Own" has always been a fan favorite from this album. The song is incredible to begin with thanks to it being one of Tammy Wynette's more heartbreaking classics. But Martina's vocal truly elevates it to a whole new level! This is the one and only song on Timeless that I feel transcends its original time period, and sounds like it could have been a hit at any point in country music history. For that reason, I have always felt like this was the obvious missed single opportunity from the album. Radio was not that interested in the project, but this one would have at least gotten more attention than "I Still Miss Someone"! It also made it all the way up to #16 in her 60-song album track rankdown that we did last year, while none of the other songs from this album even made the top half! You Ain't Woman Enough
The song that was almost the 3rd single! It was announced, and then never actually released... This song is a major fan favorite, and continues to be a fairly regular entrant in Martina's live shows. The sassy Loretta Lynn energy is on full display in this one, which is no doubt why it is such a fan favorite! It only made it to #32 out of 60 in her album tracks rankdown, as the second-highest finisher from that album. I'd say that's to be expected though, because most of us on Pulse are more interested in her original classics. Timeless is officially our first real era to leave us! Which surprisingly few of you predicted... I think toomuchboy might have been the only one? It is also our first regular era to suffer multiple losses, which literally nobody predicted! It seems like everyone thought her debut The Time Has Come would perform worse than this album. Boy were you guys wrong, as her debut escapes the bottom 10 with 2/3 of its songs intact Timeless came out in 2005, right at a point where Martina was starting to feel a little bit stagnant and unsure of where to go next. Commercially, she was performing better than she ever had before, but after the huge success of songs like "I Love You", "This One's For The Girls", etc., plus the strains of trying to juggle her career and family on top of a third pregnancy, she felt compelled to look back at her roots and remind herself/us where she started. And so, Timeless was born! The album was a HUGE success for her career! It became her fastest-selling album of all time, selling nearly 200,000 copies in its release week (Holy s**t those numbers!!! I can't even name 5 modern country artists who can do that anymore!). She had a wildly successful tour associated with the project as well. Unfortunately, radio barely touched it. After the lead single "Rose Garden" died just inside the top 20, the followup "I Still Miss Someone" barely charted. There were talks of releasing "You Ain't Woman Enough" third, but they never came to fruition... As wildly successful as this album was for her commercially, I always credit it for the beginning of her decline with radio Think about it. It was STUPID to treat this like a regular era! Anyone could have told you modern country radio would barely touch songs like this! It should have been treated like a side project, with new music to go immediately after. Instead, Martina pretty much voluntarily removed herself from radio's radar, right on the cusp of turning 40, and right at the same time that Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, and Taylor Swift burst onto the scene.... Of course she continued to have consistent top 20 hits for nearly a decade after that, and several eras of moderate success, but there is no question that this album was the turning point where radio took her out of "it-girl" status. I hold a lot of resentment towards this era for that reason, lmao.

The album was a HUGE success for her career! It became her fastest-selling album of all time, selling nearly 200,000 copies in its release week (Holy s**t those numbers!!! I can't even name 5 modern country artists who can do that anymore!).
Carrie seems to be the only one who can post such numbers anymore and look at her coming along right as Martina was beginning to be phased out by country radio! A passing of the sales torch

Recap of the Bottom 10!
50. It's Beginning To Look a Lot Like Christmas (962) ---Album: It's The Holiday Season---
49. Silver Bells (904) 48. Marry Me (887) 47. For These Times (868) 46. O Holy Night (809) ---Album: White Christmas---
45. It's My Time (779) 44. I Still Miss Someone (757) 43. That's Me (754) 42. Heart Trouble (748) 41. (I Never Promised You A) Rose Garden (738) ---Album: Timeless---
What an exciting rankdown! 10 songs in, and we've already lost three albums There is definitely a hollow place left by their departure, but hopefully none of the song losses cut too close to the core so far. We'll kick off our top 40 tomorrow with a song from an album that has already seen one loss! Any guesses which one it might be?

Um "Heart Trouble" is too low. I did lower my rankings for it compared to the first Martina RD but it's still a jam. I just grew to love some other songs more.
Granted sales were much better back when Martina released Timeless than now but 200,000 copies is nothing to scoff at in any age! Ms. Taylor the sales queen remains unbothered with 582,000 copies of Fearless sold in her debut week and then Speak Now and Red both hitting 1 million copies in its debut week before moving to pop
