Good grief, we need to stop bumping these threads up. The ancient "Cold" and "So Cold" have both regained bullets since their topics were brought back.

Well, despite moving back up to #14 on it's what, 56th week? It looks like a wave is coming to push it recurrent. There's 9 in a row gaining, plus Audioslave will be up there fast...I'll give them 2 more charts (not counting todays) to be in the top 20.

This song has been on the charts for a very long time. If they are waiting for the song to die then they will never release a 2nd single.

"Cold" for tomorrow's R&R Alternative chart dated May 6, will be in its 48th week on the chart eclipsing "I Hate Everything About You" by Three Days Grace, who had 46 weeks. "Headstrong" barely has the all-time lead now with 50.
Of course all these songs realistically would have 2 extra weeks, because R&R freezes their charts for 2 weeks at the end of each year, so theoretically, Trapt would have charted for exactly one full year.

Anyone care to take a shot at explaining why such boring, derivative, and (objectively) crap songs are setting new longevity records?

Speaking only for myself here, it just so happens that while at first I think these songs are derivative and pretty crappy, they resonate to an extent with their target audience: casual rock fans who don't "know better" than to be tired of these sounds, but also younger fans who didn't grow up during the prime of these sounds and therefore aren't sick of technically derivative, copycat bands like these.
So these latter groups of fans keep these songs going until they start sticking around long enough to finally start wearing down the initial jaded listeners (like me). There are always going to be plenty of people who never come around and just keep getting annoyed by the longevity of songs like these (like you).
I hated all these songs, including "So Cold" by Breaking Benjamin, which I believe is fourth on the list (I could be wrong). While I still don't really like "So Cold" and "Headstrong" they became solid B songs, but I'm pretty burned out on them.
"Cold" and "I Hate Everything About You" I came to like just fine, eventually, and those songs are B+ songs to me and are still listenable for me.
That's the way these songs affected me, anyway.

"So Cold" is far better to me than the other three. Maybe because it's derivative of a better song/band ("Spiders" by System of a Down) than the other three (...I'm actually drawing a blank on specific bands. Maybe an amalgamation of late-'90s, early-'00s rock?).

All I can say is that I really like "Headstrong" and "Cold"... but I really dislike "I Hate Everything About You" and "So Cold" (although I love "Sooner Or Later").... just a matter of tastes, and this kind of music will always be around IMO

I didn't like Sooner or Later at first, but it grew on me.
