I think Taylor was super smart with this era. Reputation and Lover saw her doing the same pop music with the same marketing to slightly diminishing returns, a trend that would have continued over the years until no one cared. A surprise album with a slight genre shift was a brilliant move. Taylor will never be a has-been but true legends go on being relevant long after their singles stop racing up the chart. Beyoncé stopped playing that game a while ago while maintaining event status for her albums. It's a smart move for the long run, and since Beyoncé and Taylor are both very smart I'm not surprised that's the direction they're going.

I define a big event as a) influencers outside of music critics/reactors/etc talking about it or b) my grandma and my neighbour's baby sister knowing the song. A song cannot reach the latter in a week, and for the prior it has to have something "special" about it, like Gooba which inspired many, many parodies and re-launched 6ix9ine into the public concious for those fifteen minutes of fame, while laso making it break the record for most-watched rap music video within the first 24 hours (which WAP couldn't break). Highest in the Room on the other hand literally debuted with almost twice the amount of streams of WAP and kept the numbers high throughout the week so saying that it wasn't big just isn't true, especially since it was also discussed because of Travis' breakup with Kylie Jenner. I am not saying that WAP won't be as big as those songs in some time, but saying that it is the biggest event since OTR is just plain wrong. However, I do hope that it will reach those levels, since I really enjoy the song. If some people will keep repeating them, I can see the song reaching more and more people though. I'm not saying that WAP's numbers are bad, am I? They're great, and since they are so similar to what HITR was doing, that song was massive too, just, because of how long it has been out, it gained more traction. I'm looking not only at spotify, that was really just an example that I used mostly because the numbers are made public.

The discussion about sexuality and women in rap has been going on for a while on the other hand, but this may just be some sort of pinnacle for it I guess. But reallym now with the backlash against that post I am honestly starting to think that it may just be that I'm European and I just don't get some things

A lot of templates in that video can be seen across all of the videos he did for Kendrick during the .DAMN era and even Travis’ own Sicko Mode. You may also want to start prefacing certain discussions that your viewpoint is from a European residence because some of this could’ve been avoided earlier. But honestly, I wouldn’t even buy that excuse now because Dizzee Rascal was pulling this a decade earlier.

Taylor’s song “Cardigan” is doing just fine. The song is doing great with no promotion and mainly streaming from us Swifties and purchases on ITunes/Target, This era is a success no matter what. While Rep And Lover got minimal Critical Acclaim, This Album has massive Critical Acclaim and is a major contender for AOTY at the Grammys. This album is like Beyoncé’s 2013 Surprise release, the songs are intended for major chart placements like “Me!” And “You Need To Calm Down”. The intention this era is different than her past eras and so far it is done far better on the charts than anyone expected and in that way it is considered a major win for Taylor on this project.

Yeah, and though the album is definitely more folk-skewed, it was marketed and intended as a full-blown, mainstream studio release, so let's not pretend like this is some completely obscure, indie side-project, and as mentioned, there have been other more acoustic, folky-type songs that have had better staying power (though many of them, such as Shallow, take a while to build up, so it's still early and Cardigan might eventually follow that route), but I do think it's completely fair to say that so far, as far as #1 debuts go (like many others this year), it's not holding up as well as could be desired. It was marketed as mainstream and intended as a full-blow studio release? Bruh. The surprise album that was dropped in hours without notice or any kind of advanced promotion? Mainstream? What is "mainstream" about this album other than Taylor being the artist? Any and every review speaks of the shift in style and sound of the album and how it largely leans alternative/indie. It is in no way crafted for mainstream success in the way Lover was and sounds nothing like/is the antethisis of everything that is popular atm. You must be listening to a completely different album. Interesting the only comparison you have to draw a parallel to is "Shallow", a song that was a phenomenon all its own, backed by a huge push via the film and music industry, award season buzz, and mumerings of an alleged romance between its artists. Even still "Shallow", with all its success, crawled up radio and failed to hit big on pop peaking just within the top 20 at #18 (right where "Cardigan" is now,funnily enough). Not to mention "Cardigan" isn't backed by a hugely successful film and blockbuster, consistent promotional train. Let's not even mention the fact that "Cardigan" outpeaked every single from Lover despite that and streaming for Folklore has vastly been more stable and consistent than her last release as well despite this all. The fact that a song like "Cardigan" hit #1 to start with and Taylor brought a folk album to the summit of the yearly album sales chart 15 years into her career after two weeks is a testament to her success, yet some try to paint it is a sign of her struggling/under-performance. Y'all crack me up. So, as is shown, yes, this was ABSOLUTELY a full-blown, mainstream, fully-promoted studio release. She uses the exact words, "I will be releasing my 8th STUDIO album," and in 16 different physical versions nonetheless, which you do not do for a side project. The fact that it was announced last minute is immaterial nowadays, as many, many album releases are announced last minute. It was all over social media, the news, entertainment sites, etc., it was inescapable that this album was out and it got a full rollout. And yes, I already mentioned that it's heavily folk-leaning, but an album can absolutely be non-pure pop and have other genre leanings but still be considered a mainstream release, and it's not like it's the Fleet Foxes or Leonard Cohen or anything, and many (but not all) the songs still have pretty strong pop undergirdings, including especially Cardigan, and is still classically Taylor. I mentioned Shallow just as an example, there are others, and don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that I don't like the album or that it's underperforming or anything or that Cardigan is a flop per se, but it was designated as the lead single, had a video right away, and is being pushed to major radio formats, and since IT DID debut at number one, that by default set a high bar for itself, so comparing it against OTHER #1 DEBUTS, it is disappointing to see it drop to possibly the 20s already by its third week. But like I said, it is early and it still could rebound, so I don't know why YOU ALL have to come at me so strong. Like, people complain about us trying to discredit Taylor when it's really not discrediting but just bringing up small criticisms about how things aren't quite as they used to be with her or that she's slipping in one particular instance, so it really is funny how stans go to great lengths to silence all criticisms and say they have absolutely no merit and to paint the picture that everything is completely pristine and stellar with her.

^One great opportunity for Taylor as well as other artists to get a boost for their songs will be to perform at the BBMAs in just under two months. I can definitely see her perform Cardigan the way she performed Lover at the AMAs last year. Of course, performing in other television shows, such as the late night ones or SNL is also a good option.

Let's not even mention the fact that "Cardigan" outpeaked every single from Lover despite that and streaming for Folklore has vastly been more stable and consistent than her last release as well despite this all. The fact that a song like "Cardigan" hit #1 to start with and Taylor brought a folk album to the summit of the yearly album sales chart 15 years into her career after two weeks is a testament to her success, yet some try to paint it is a sign of her struggling/under-performance. Y'all crack me up. So, as is shown, yes, this was ABSOLUTELY a full-blown, mainstream, fully-promoted studio release. She uses the exact words, "I will be releasing my 8th STUDIO album," and in 16 different physical versions nonetheless, which you do not do for a side project. The fact that it was announced last minute is immaterial nowadays, as many, many album releases are announced last minute. It was all over social media, the news, entertainment sites, etc., it was inescapable that this album was out and it got a full rollout. And yes, I already mentioned that it's heavily folk-leaning, but an album can absolutely be non-pure pop and have other genre leanings but still be considered a mainstream release, and it's not like it's the Fleet Foxes or Leonard Cohen or anything, and many (but not all) the songs still have pretty strong pop undergirdings, including especially Cardigan, and is still classically Taylor. I mentioned Shallow just as an example, there are others, and don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that I don't like the album or that it's underperforming or anything or that Cardigan is a flop per se, but it was designated as the lead single, had a video right away, and is being pushed to major radio formats, and since IT DID debut at number one, that by default set a high bar for itself, so comparing it against OTHER #1 DEBUTS, it is disappointing to see it drop to possibly the 20s already by its third week. But like I said, it is early and it still could rebound, so I don't know why YOU ALL have to come at me so strong. Like, people complain about us trying to discredit Taylor when it's really not discrediting but just bringing up small criticisms about how things aren't quite as they used to be with her or that she's slipping in one particular instance, so it really is funny how stans go to great lengths to silence all criticisms and say they have absolutely no merit and to paint the picture that everything is completely pristine and stellar with her. 👏🏿 👏🏿 👏🏿

I think the user didn't see the date correctly because this is for all 7 days (7th-13th). The number includes UGC which was changed in Jan 2020 regarding its counting on Billboard Hot 100. Since YouTube views are filtered out at high rate, Talk Of The Charts say ~60% count, so: 60% out of YouTube = 34.56 + 51.66 Audio streams (HitsDD) = 86.22M. 'Thank u, next' had 93.8M (with the old rule). So depends on how many views are counted from YouTube. If the old rule was still around, 'WAP' would have had 109M streams (only behund 'In My Feelings' and multiple weeks from 'Old Town Road'). Here are Global and US:

In the last 28 days OTR has 14.2M, Panini has 6.29M & Rodeo 4.76M. --- Roar by Katy has 6.57M streams in the last 28 days in the US on YouTube for comparison ---
Past 7 days: OTR has 3.34M, Panini has 1.56M & Rodeo has 1.14M. Which isn't bad by any means, but it isn't anything to brag about either.

Sometimes I don't believe I'm actually reading some of the comments on these chart threads, these are truly another beast like.. Sometimes I don't believe how low tech Pulse Members are - continually quoting large blocks over and over - only to add one or two meaningless lines... But maybe it's a strategy to make threads look longer. Could Harry's label ask radio stations to drop AY and give some out of that outdated song's airplay to WS?
