The VMAs tonight will probably provide a nice boost for some songs, I think Rain On Me and Dynamite will see the biggest gains out of it.

Last year's VMAs:
Truth Hurts Digital Song Sales more than doubling from 26,000 to 53,000. It also pushes 6-4 on Streaming Songs, up 21% to 34.4 million U.S. streams in the same span.
Helping spark the gains were Lizzo's buzzy VMAs performance, her four-song set on NBC's Today on Aug. 23 and two newly released versions: a DaBaby remix and a CD remix.

Mendes and Cabello's "Señorita" retreats to No. 2 on the Hot 100, despite a 2% gain in overall metrics and after the pair performed it on the VMAs.
Swift surges 14-4 on the Hot 100 with "You Need to Calm Down" and 19-10 with "Lover," as the songs blast 22-9 (24.6 million, up 49%) and 21-7 (29.1 million, up 81%) on Streaming Songs, respectively; current radio single "Calm" additionally rises 13-12 on Radio Songs (52.7 million, down 2%). VMAS this year will certainly not have the same impact as last year for obvious reasons. So not expecting big gains for any song being performed today.

It depends on several things I'd say. The HUUUUUUUGE smashes might not benefit much but songs that have not yet reached the saturation levels will gain.
For instance, if The Weeknd performs Blinding Lights, that will not have any significant impact.
Maluma's Hawái might very well surge a lot.

Technical question: Can you just not bring up Mariah in every single thing, like that album ain’t even top half from her discography? Speaking about Mariah, if for example Rockin Around The Christmas Tree went #1 and AIWFCIY didn’t, then would it still have the same credit around here as the latter, or would more people demand for XMas songs to be removed? |

Why do American artists release songs mid week? I understand why International artist do due to different tracking weeks in different countries, but why Anerican artists?

Maybe because you don't have to battle against other songs. No new releases on mid week. It doesn't really matter what the first week is if the song has longevity.

Last year the VMAs lined up with the Lover release so I don't think Taylor's bump had much to do with them.
Lizzo had a huge push as well that week to gun for #1.
But they can take credit for the 2% bump for Señorita I guess.
