'Folklore' leads for a sixth week. Plus, Metallica and Katy Perry debut in top 10.
Taylor Swift’s Folklore collects its sixth week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, making it the album with the most weeks atop the list in nearly four years. The set earned 90,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending Sept. 3 (down 8 percent), according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.

Folklore now has the most weeks at No. 1 since Drake’s Views ruled for 13 nonconsecutive weeks on the charts dated May 21-Oct. 8, 2016. Plus, Swift ties Whitney Houston for the most cumulative weeks at No. 1 among women -- more on that in just a moment.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new Sept. 12-dated chart (where Folklore spends a sixth week at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's website on Wednesday, Sept. 9 (a day later than usual, due to the Monday, Sept. 7 Labor Day holiday in the U.S.). Of Folklore’s units earned in the tracking week ending Sept. 3, album sales comprise 51,000 (down 2 percent), SEA units comprise 38,000 (down 15 percent) and TEA units total 1,000 (down 14 percent).

Swift Ties Whitney Houston: With Folklore’s sixth week at No. 1, Swift’s cumulative weeks at No. 1, across all of her seven chart-topping albums, now rises to 46. That ties Whitney Houston for the most weeks atop the chart by a woman in history. Houston landed four No. 1 albums: her self-titled debut (14 weeks at No. 1 in 1986), her sophomore effort Whitney (11 in 1987), The Bodyguard soundtrack (20 in 1992-93) and I Look to You (one week in 2009).

After Swift and Houston, Adele has the next-most weeks at No. 1 among women, with 34 weeks from her two No. 1s: 21 (24 in 2011-12) and 25 (10 in 2015-16).

The all-time leader with the most weeks at No. 1 is The Beatles, with 132 weeks at No. 1 across their 19 leaders.

Swift Leads 2020: With a sixth week at No. 1, Folklore surpasses Lil Baby’s My Turn for the most weeks at No. 1 in 2020. In addition, Folklore has the most weeks in a row atop the list since Views spent its first nine weeks at No. 1 in 2016.

Folklore also has the most weeks at No. 1 for any non-R&B/hip-hop album, or an album by a woman, since Adele’s 25 tallied 10 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 between Dec. 12, 2015, and March 12, 2016. Folklore also has the most weeks in a row for either a non-R&B/hip-hop set or an album by a woman since 25 notched its first seven weeks at No. 1 (Dec. 12, 2015 – Jan. 23, 2016).

Swift Meets The Beatles: Folklore is Swift’s fifth album to log at least six weeks at No. 1, making her one of just two acts to have at least five albums each with six weeks at No. 1. Only The Beatles also managed the feat.

Swift previously spent six weeks at No. 1 with, in descending order of weeks at No. 1, 1989 (11 in 2014-15), Fearless (11 in 2008-09), Red (seven in 2012-13) and Speak Now (six in 2010-11). The Beatles did it with 12 of their 19 No. 1s albums: Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (15 weeks in 1967), the A Hard Day’s Night soundtrack (14 weeks in 1964), Meet the Beatles! (11 weeks in 1964), Abbey Road (11 weeks in 1969-70), Beatles ’65 (nine weeks in 1965), the Help! soundtrack (nine weeks in 1965), The Beatles (a.k.a. The White Album) (nine weeks in 1968-69), the Magical Mystery Tour soundtrack (eight weeks in 1968), the 1 greatest hits compilation (eight weeks in 2000-01), Beatles VI (six weeks in 1965), Rubber Soul (six weeks in 1966) and Revolver (six weeks in 1966).

Following Folklore on the new Billboard 200 are a pair of former No. 1s, as Pop Smoke’s Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon holds at No. 2 (77,000 equivalent album units earned, down 6 percent) and Juice WRLD’s Legends Never Die is a non-mover at No. 3 (64,000 units; down 9 percent).

Metallica debuts at No. 4 with the rock band’s new live effort S&M2, a co-billed project with the San Francisco Symphony. The set, which is a sequel to 1999’s No. 2-peaking S&M, bows with 56,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that figure, album sales total 53,000, SEA units equal 3,000 (translating to 3.6 million on-demand streams of the album’s tracks in the tracking week) and TEA units represent a negligible figure.

S&M2 is Metallica’s 11th top 10 album, and also makes the act the first group (and third act overall) with at least one new top 10 album in each of the last five decades.Metallica logged one top 10 in the ‘80s (…And Justice for All, No. 6 in 1988), five in the ‘90s (the No. 1 self-titled set in 1991; Load, No. 1 in 1996; Reload, No. 1 in 1997; Garage Inc., No. 2 in 1998 and S&M, No. 2 in 1999), two in the ‘00s (St. Anger, No. 1 in 2003 and Death Magnetic, No. 1 in 2008), two in the ‘10s (Metallica: Through the Never, No. 9 in 2013 and Hardwired… To Self-Destruct, No. 1 in 2016) and now one in the ‘20s with S&M2.

The only other acts with at least one new top 10 album in each decade from the ‘80s through ‘20s are James Taylor and Ozzy Osbourne.

Katy Perry’s new album Smile launches at No. 5 with 50,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, album sales total 35,000 (aided by merchandise/album bundles sold via Perry’s official webstore), SEA units equal 14,000 (translating to 19 million on-demand streams of the album’s songs in the tracking week) and TEA units total 2,000.

Smile is Perry’s fifth top 10 effort, following Witness (No. 1 in 2017), Prism (No. 1, 2013), Teenage Dream (No. 1, 2010) and One of the Boys (No. 9, 2008).

With Swift and Perry at Nos. 1 and 5, respectively, it’s the first time two albums by solo women (or acts led by or comprised entirely of women) have been in the top five together in seven months. It last occurred on the Feb. 8-dated chart, when Billie Eilish’s When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? was No. 3 while Halsey’s Manic was No. 4.

The original Broadway cast recording of Hamilton: An American Musical slips 4-6 with 48,000 equivalent album units (down 6 percent), while Lil Baby’s former No. 1 My Turn descends 6-7 with 42,000 units (down 3 percent). Rod Wave’s Pray 4 Love dips 7-8 with 36,000 units (down 9 percent) and DaBaby’s previous No. 1 Blame it On Baby is steady at No. 9 with 32,000 units (down 5 percent).

The final debut in the top 10 is from the production collective Internet Money, whose B4 the Storm arrives at No. 10 with 31,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that starting sum, SEA units equal 30,000 (translating to 41.1 million on-demand streams of the album’s tracks in the tracking week), album sales total a little under 1,000 and TEA units equal a negligible sum.

B4 the Storm is a feature-laden affair, boasting guests such as Future, Juice WRLD, Wiz Khalifa, The Kid Laroi, Lil Tecca, NAV, Swae Lee and Trippie Redd.

It's been noteworthy when an act hasn't utilized these options in the last several years, which has been few and far between. That will change soon, of course. Though consumers will have the option to add an album (if such option exists) when purchasing concert tickets or merch in the future.

By now you’ve probably read that Taylor Swift ties Whitney Houston as the female solo artist with the most weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 -- 46 weeks. That’s pretty impressive since the chart dates back to March 1956, before either artist was born.

You may be wondering what other artists are up there on the all-time rankings. Glad you asked.

In all, 22 acts have logged 26 or more weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s flagship album chart. Here’s a complete list. Ties are shown in alphabetical order. In true Casey Kasem style, we’ll count ‘em down to No. 1.

22. Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass (26 weeks): The ensemble had more weeks at No. 1 than any other instrumental act. The Brass’ longest running No. 1 was What Now My Now (nine weeks in 1966). That’s one week more than its most famous album, Whipped Cream & Other Delights (eight weeks in 1965-66), with a cover that was considered unbelievably sexy in 1965 -- or 2020, for that matter.

21. Barbra Streisand (27 weeks): The legendary star’s longest running No. 1 was the A Star Is Born soundtrack (six weeks in 1977), on which she shared billing with co-star Kris Kristofferson. Her next longest running No. 1 was People (five weeks in 1964).

20. Drake (27 weeks): The hip-hop star’s longest running No. 1 to date is Views (13 weeks in 2016).

18. Bruce Springsteen (29 weeks): The Boss’ longest running No. 1s are Born in the U.S.A. (seven weeks in 1984-85) and Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band Live/1975-85 (seven weeks in 1986-87). He shared billing with the E Street Band on the latter album, a five-disk box set.

18. Led Zeppelin (29 weeks): The band has logged more weeks at No. 1 than any other hard rock or heavy metal band. (Metallica is in second place with 14 weeks on top.) Led Zep’s longest running No. 1s are Led Zeppelin II (seven weeks in 1969-70) and In Through the Out Door (seven weeks in 1979).

16. Eagles (30 weeks): The band’s longest running No. 1 was The Long Run (nine weeks in 1979). That’s one week more than its most famous and classic album, Hotel California (eight weeks in 1977).

16. Mariah Carey (30 weeks): Carey’s longest running No. 1 was her debut, Mariah Carey (11 weeks in 1991).

14. Eminem (34 weeks): Eminem has spent more weeks at No. 1 than any other hip-hop artist. (Runner-up Drake has logged 27 weeks on top.) Eminem’s longest running No. 1 was The Marshall Mathers LP (eight weeks in 2000).

14. Adele (34 weeks): Adele’s longest running No. 1 is 21 (24 weeks in 2011-12).

13. Prince (35 weeks): Prince’ s longest running No. 1 was the Purple Rain soundtrack (24 weeks in 1984-85). His next longest running No. 1, Batman, was also tied to a film. Purple Rain was one of two No. 1 albums on which Prince shared billing with his band, The Revolution. (The other was Around the World in a Day, their follow-up to Purple Rain.)

11. The Monkees (37 weeks): The group’s longest running No. 1 was More of the Monkees (18 weeks in 1967.) It was that year’s longest running No. 1 album, ahead of a little item titled Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

11. Harry Belafonte (37 weeks): The calypso singer's Belafonte album was No. 1 on the very first weekly Billboard 200 chart. Belafonte’s longest running No. 1 was Calypso (31 weeks in 1956-57). Belafonte, 93, is the oldest artist on this list.

9. The Rolling Stones (38 weeks): The band’s longest running No. 1 was Tattoo You (nine weeks in 1981).

9. Fleetwood Mac (38 weeks): The group has had more weeks at No. 1 than any other mixed-gender group. (Prince & the Revolution are runners-up with 27 weeks on top.) Fleetwood Mac’s longest running No. 1 was Rumours (31 weeks in 1977).

8. Elton John (39 weeks): Captain Fantastic has spent more weeks at No. 1 than any other solo artist who wasn’t born in the U.S. (Runner-up is Adele, with 34 weeks on top.) His longest running No. 1 album was Greatest Hits (10 weeks in 1974-75).

5. Taylor Swift (46 weeks): Swift’s longest running No. 1 albums are Fearless (11 weeks in 2008-09) and 1989 (11 weeks in 2014-15). Folklore is just five weeks away from equaling that run. At this point, we shouldn’t put anything past her. Swift, 30, is the youngest artist on this list.

5. The Kingston Trio (46 weeks): The folk trio spent more weeks at No. 1 than any other American group or duo. (Among groups and duos where all the members were born in the U.S., runners-up are Eagles, with 30 weeks at No. 1.) The trio’s longest running No. 1 was The Kingston Trio at Large (15 weeks in 1959).

5. Whitney Houston (46 weeks): Houston’s longest running No. 1 was The Bodyguard soundtrack (20 weeks in 1992-93). She recorded just six of the album’s 13 tracks, but they were the ones that sold the album. And her photo dominated the album cover. Houston’s next longest running No. 1 was Whitney Houston (14 weeks in 1986).

4. Michael Jackson (51 weeks): MJ spent more weeks at No. 1 than any other Black artist. (Houston is runner-up at 46 weeks.) His longest running No. 1 was Thriller (37 weeks in 1983-84).

3. Garth Brooks (52 weeks): Brooks has spent more weeks at No. 1 than any other country artist. (Runner-up, way back at 17 weeks, is Billy Ray Cyrus). Brooks’ longest running No. 1 was Ropin’ the Wind (18 weeks in 1991-92).

2. Elvis Presley (67 weeks). Presley spent more weeks at No. 1 than any other solo artist and more than any other American artist. (Brooks is runner-up on both counts.) Presley’s longest running No. 1 was the Blue Hawaii soundtrack (20 weeks in 1961-62). His tally includes four No. 1 soundtracks: Loving You, G.I. Blues, Blue Hawaii and Roustabout.

1.The Beatles (132 weeks): The Fab Four have spent nearly twice as long at No. 1 as any other act. Their longest running No. 1 is Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (15 weeks in 1967). Their tally includes four No. 1 soundtracks: A Hard Day’s Night, Help!, Magical Mystery Tour and Let It Be.

The Fine Print: If you count the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack (which logged 24 weeks at No. 1 in 1978) as a Bee Gees album, the trio had 31 weeks on top. Bee Gees had six tracks on the album -- five of which were No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Their photo was on the front cover -- as prominent as a photo of the film’s star, John Travolta. But Billboard counts it as a multi-artist soundtrack album.

Likewise, if you count The Graduate soundtrack (which logged nine weeks at No. 1 in 1968) as a Simon & Garfunkel album, the duo had 26 weeks at No. 1. The duo recorded eight of the album’s 14 tracks and had a front-cover credit (though not a front-cover photo: The cover was the iconic image of star Dustin Hoffman eyeing co-star Anne Bancroft’s seductively outstretched leg). The Graduate competed on the Billboard 200 with S&G’s fourth album, Bookends. One album or the other was No. 1 for 16 consecutive weeks. Billboard counts The Graduate as a soundtrack, not a S&G album.

U.S. Vinyl Album Sales Hit Biggest Week in 2020 After First Record Store Day Drop

Thanks to Record Store Day 2020’s first drop on Aug. 29, U.S. vinyl album sales surged to a new weekly high in 2020, as 802,000 copies were sold in the week ending Sept. 3, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. That’s a 63% increase compared to the previous week’s sales.

That 802,000 haul is also the largest week for vinyl album sales since the week ending Dec. 26, 2019, when 1.243 million copies were sold.

Further, the 802,000 sum is the biggest week for vinyl albums outside of the Christmas shopping season since the week ending April 18, 2019, when 848,000 were sold. That week included Record Store Day 2019 festivities.

Due to complications caused by COVID-19, Record Store Day 2020 – which was slated to take place April 18 – was split into three separate drops: Aug. 29, Sept. 26 and Oct. 24. In turn, the Record Store Day-focused releases and exclusive titles that were all due to hit independent and small chain record stores on April 18 were spread across the three days, including the two upcoming dates. Many titles are released specifically for the annual music store holiday, including unique color vinyl variants, hard-to-find catalog pieces and niche reissues.

The biggest-selling album at indie and small chain record stores in the week ending Sept. 3 – as reflected on the weekly Tastemakers albums chart (dated Sept. 12) – was Billie Eilish’s Record Store Day release Live at Third Man Records, with 13,000 copies sold. The 10-track acoustic album was recorded on Nov. 6, 2019 and was released exclusively on blue opaque vinyl. The set also debuts at No. 55 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Eight of the top 10 albums sold at indie and small-chain retailers (see list, below) were either released for Record Store Day or had a new format of variants issued for the holiday. Only Taylor Swift’s Folklore (No. 3 for the week) and Metallica’s S&M2 (No. 4) were not Record Store Day-focused, though the latter had a color variant exclusive to indie stores for its release on Aug. 28.
