if you like this (or even if you don't), check out a song of theirs called "Number With Wings": Seconding this, Spotify recommended it to me not too long ago and I liked it quite a bit, would probably be in my top 30 on this list. Which only made this song all the more disappointing to me.

Man, I haven't had such a clean set of rankdown reveals in an eternity. Going to savor this while I can because I'm sure tomorrow everything's turning sideways.

I don't like either Howard Jones song here but "Life In One Day" sounded flat-out comical "Life In One Day" is probably my least-favorite Howard Jones song. However, "Things Can Only Get Better" is great, and so is the unranked "Like To Get To Know You Well."

#80: "Hits Of The Year" - SqueezeDamn this band can't get a break. Vocally not the best. I get it, but this this song is pretty good. Loved the bass line and how it lines up with the brass. which in this case would be the flute. #79: "Bite The Hand That Feeds" - Paul YoungDidn't recall this one right off the back, but it sounded really great. Sounds like one of those that would have cruised on over to pop. 80's New Wave killed in on the bass melodies. #78: "I'll Be There" - What Is ThisAn R&B cover isn't the best idea for Modern Rock, but this song has always had a wonderful melody and I think it worked with this rock vibe. Never heard of this band, but I also found the singer's pleasant enough to carry the guitar strums into my top half of the list. #77: "Nemesis" - ShriekbackThis was pretty big on yearend lists yet I didn't recall it getting much airplay. It had a gothic like melody progressed into pure silliness for me. Plus I hate this guy's vocal tones more than words can describe. Still not bad enough for bottom 20. #76: "Old Man Down The Road" - John FogertyI kinda like this jam. I don't think it belongs anywhere near a list like this, but I dig the folky "swamp hucklebilly" vibe or whatever you call it. #75: "Can't Get Enough Of You Baby" - ColourfieldI didn't know this existed and honestly though Smash Mouth had introduced me to this song? This one really brought in that psychedelic Paul Revere and The Raiders vibe. This organ style needs to make a comeback ASAP. #74: "Rain" - Boomtown RatsAnother first time listen. This is probably the most Bruce Springsteen top 40 I have heard this band sound, and I really loved it. Could be my favorite song from them? Not surprised I gave it the highest ranking since I was a top 40 kid. #73: "Space Jungle" - BongosI loved the way this song pulls you by the nuts and drags you to the dance floor. 'nuff said.....oh yeah it also has cowbell. #72: "Castles In Spain" - Armoury ShowLost a top 5, but i gained an mp3 I had been searching for years for. Like I mentioned to Troy . I had searched for this song for years under different band names and barely discovered who sang it this year. Easily my favorite first time listen since 1985 listen on this RD. Could of been Fobia or another Spanish Rock band. Loved the continuous riff throughout the song. very new wave gothic. * Gonna do a few more extras with these reveals. I'm pretty sure I've made known to the world my enthusiastic feelings towards "19" which is anything but enticing. "19'This song needed vocals in order to be something I could enjoy. Sounds like Max Headroom's brother is speaking about some war issues which I care little for. I like the female vocals, but would have preferred vocals about 19 year old blondes instead. I was about 8-9 back then. "Rainforest" uses some freestyle Nocera song as it's background. Actually I think it's Connie "Funky Little Beat"? Nice pleasant background music, but it could use some lyrics about the weather or something along those lines. Pleasure And Pain - DivinylsMuch better than her ode to self pleasure. I like the heavier "Boys In Town", but this one had a really cool Motels' New Wave vibe to it. Also I didn't know she had passed away. Damn. Cult - RainThe Cult could do no wrong with those guitar licks , fashion sense ,and vocals. Most likely another easy top 15 for me. Tom Waits - Rain DogsTom howling like wolf at the start of the vid. What the actual fuck. I can't handle this guy's vocals, but the song had a weird spooky carnival vibe to it. Kinda cool in a background music for a haunted house way. John Mellencamp - Rain On The ScarecrowI didn't really go for John's Alternative R.E.M sound. The lyrics don't sing to me either. T upelo Chain Sex - Revolution Will Be TelevisedWhat was this? I loved this band's name. I just wish the song gave me more of a Chains Sex vibe. Seriously had to google Chain Sex too. Nik Kershaw - RiddleNow we are getting somewhere. Love the main riff here. I see European castles and Pied pipers. It's a shame we didn't get to rank this one, because I would have really upgraded this one. randomly inserted blonde in a bikini. Even Nik looked surprised. Dance Society - Say It AgainWhat do you get if you cross Pete Burns and Jim Morrison? You get what is easily my favorite song of this batch. Now this gives me Chain Sex club vibes. One of my favorites of 1986 actually since that is when it finally cruised on over to the Hi-Energy dance Charts. A song like this needs to be appreciated in extended mix mode. I'm thinking if I really tried I could squeeze this into my top 10 on this list. Not sure how well if would have done among the rest of the rankers, but I'm pretty sure you all don't have this classic in your vinyl collections? Mike + The Mechanics - Silent RunningGreat song but not for this list . Still I'm thinking top 30. Lime Spiders - Slave GirlThis band's vocals are grating to the maxx. The song wasn't good at all. Even on guitar level it just felt uncoordinated. It had it's moments ,but its highlight was probably that upskirt thumbnail shot in the video. Belouis Some - Some PeopleThis is one of his best songs. Shame we didn't rank this one. Very upbeat and great percussion. has a bit of a Synthpop meets tropical melody going on. Fleshtones - Super Rock MedleyIt's a fun jam song. I'll give it that. Vocals kinda suck, but for these kinds of songs its the music that counts.

#71: "Ways To Be Wicked" - Lone Justice Forget to mention this song. I enjoyed it for it's Sheryl Crowe vibe ,and I almost pushed it into my top 50. It just felt more 90's than 80's.

#80 "Hits Of The Year" - Squeeze
Squeeze's style is a little hard to pin down - they change things up quite a bit from single to single. Here they try out a sort of groove-oriented sophisti-pop, and it actually works out pretty well for them.
#79 "Bite The Hand That Feeds" - Paul Young
This was a strange one for me - I kept feeling like I was overranking it a bit, but upon repeated listens, this was the spot it felt natural at. I can see how the production here may feel overstuffed to some, but I personally kind of like the density of the track. The pop hooks here are effective as well. Like dissociative though, I don't quite understand what Paul Young is doing on an alternative/modern rock chart to begin with. The material he was doing on this album would fit right in on a pop station.
#78 "I'll Be There" - What Is This
This was produced by Todd Rundgren, which is never a bad thing in my book, but this Spinners cover feels... unnecessary. It's a perfectly fine listen, but it doesn't improve on the original nor does the band find any particular twist to add to it.
#77 "Nemesis" - Shriekback
The gasping vocals in the verses irritated me as the song went on, but the chorus here is a superb mix of catchy and eerie.
#76 "Old Man Down The Road" - John Fogerty
I love the dark, swampy sound of this track - feels like something that could have been a CCR track a decade-and-a-half earlier. John Fogerty maybe goes a bit to far with all the "hidey-hides" as Right Now noted, but as a big fan of the Creedence sound, this track as a whole works for me. It was rather hard to judge this track for the rankdown though; most of the songs this year are very overtly '80s, so it's weird to get hit by stuff like this and The Beat Farmers.
#75 "Can't Get Enough Of You Baby" - Colourfield
I recognized this as a ? & The Mysterians cover, even though I'm pretty sure I'd never heard the original track before. Colourfield's take definitely plays into the '60s vibe, but they go a bit slower and more psychedelic than the original. It works out well for them.
#74 "Rain" - Boomtown Rats
On first listen, I loved the atmosphere and excellent production here. On subsequent listens though, I found myself becoming irritated by Bob Geldof's vocals. He sounds very yearning and overwrought, and it really cheeses up the track. Still though, plenty of non-Geldof things went right here.
#73 "Space Jungle" - Bongos
A bit on the simple side in terms of songwriting, but it's a fun, upbeat treat with some pleasing new wave vibes.
#72 "Castles In Spain" - Armoury Show
There are some good things going on with the bass here, but aside from that, this one didn't really register with me. It didn't straight up irritate or bore me like my bottom seven tracks did, but it was one of those "in one ear and out the other" tracks.
#71 "Ways To Be Wicked" - Lone Justice
The crisp, fairly minimalist production stood out in this year's batch, and you can almost always count on the songwriting skills of Tom Petty and Mike Campbell when it comes to penning straight-forward heartland rock tracks. A little too "dry" for me to rank any higher, but it's an enjoyable song. I also agree with Doc Indie Party Rock that this feels like it should be a '90s mainstream song rather than an '80s alternative track.

The quirkiness of Byrne's lyrics was always part of the TH's appeal, but the concept and tone of Stay Up Late goes too far into infantile territory, and it gives me hardcore second-hand embarrassment. I never want to hear a grown man describe a child's "little pee pee". And the instrumental is way too simple to stand out and make up for the lyrics.

I don't know if this was somewhat tanked due to unfamiliarity, but I thought it was an excellent first listen. Great jangly guitars and lovely vocal harmonies.

And yea, we still haven't ranked anything close to X's glory days in retro Alt. if anything from their first 4 albums shows up, rest assured they'll rocket up my lists.

There are some big names still hanging around with very mediocre songs - let's get rid of those instead.

Rattlesnakes contains some of the best songwriting (and jangling) of the decade, get outta here with this reveal. Definitely wasn't expecting this to be my first top 30 loss over my #28, either.
(also re: Guadalcanal Diary, I'm a little disappointed we never got to rank "Litany (Life Goes On)", that song's a gem)

The 80s lists have given me a lot of these experiences where I don't recognize a solo artist, and I think "wonder why we're ranking this random Adult Contemporary song on Alt". Then I look up the name, realize they're a member of a 1st Wave band, and then my thought turns to "wtf how were they not able to retain any of their cool factor from the band into their own recordings?"
