I don't like either Howard Jones song here but "Life In One Day" sounded flat-out comical

Thought this would be way higher just because the Eurythmics made it, glad to see that's not the case

Despite my ranking, this was one of the better ones I've heard from them.

Wow these reveals blew, but at the same time were pretty cool, because most cleared out my bottom 20. Warning: Some of these mini reviews might be too harsh for sensitive readers. #90: "Bigger Stones - Beat Farmersthis song sounded weird. It really didn't seem to fit in any genre for me. was it country? was it Hearttland. was it New Wave? It didn't even last long enough to categorize it. #89: "Universal Radio" - Nina HagenWhat the hell was this? Never heard this before. The music itself was actually kinda cool. As a instrumental I would have ranked it much higher, but her vocal works sounded bi-polar. One moment she sounded normal next moment she was flying over the cuckoo's nest. A musical exorcism if you will. #88: "? (Voices Of Modern Industry)" - FishboneThis must have been the year when bands were trying new sounds? This was another "what the hell did I just listen to" PULSE moments in my book. Some weird ass beats with some dude giving shout outs to his favorite radio Stations? I swore he mentioned KROQ which was actually the high point of the song. What the hell was the "?" in the song's title about anyway? #87: "World Destruction" - Time Zone...and there it is. I know you all saw it coming? This song was begging me to give it a big fat #100 ,and I was more than happy to oblige. Love seeing my #100 show up early in the game. "World Destruction" is correct. An apocalyptic vocal catastrophy is all I got in thos three and a half minutes.. #86: "Cheerleaders" - MinutemenThis was terrible all the way around. The melody is just one verse after another and sounded atrociously numb, and the vocals sounded wooden as they can get. No emotion. Basically lifeless. To top it off you call your song "Cheerleaders"? Yeah right. Dead Cheerleaders? maybe? #85: "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" - BluebellsThis kinda sounded like amateur R.E.M with better vocals. R.E.M's sound was good for the 90's. Not the big synthpop/arena rock 80's. This song was alright, because it was short enough not to get on my nerves, and like I mentioned. I kinda dug the vocals. #84: "Temptation" - Joan ArmatradingThis wasn't nearly half as interesting as "Kind Words (And a Real Good Heart)" Give this woman a guitar. That's the instrument she was known for. Also interesting to find out she was from the 70's. #83: "Life In One Day" - Howard Jones I do love me some Howard Jones, but if I was to get on board with what some of you have commented I would have to agree that this is one of his hokier songs. That is why it missed my top 40. #82: "I Love You Like A Ball & Chain" - EurythmicsI love the New Wave vibe of this song and especially the percussion with the DOA claps and the guitars, but It also misses my top 40, but this time because I wasn't too familiar with it back than. Also I don't need over eight minutes of this particular song. The 4 and half deal is enough. #81: "Bottom Line" - Big Audio DynamiteThis could possibly be my favorite Big Audio Dynamite song ever. That isn't saying much, because it still vocally challenged, but it did make my top 50. I liked the "White Lines" riff, and the percussion. Again with the NRG claps. Percussion is a big deal for me. It pretty much makes or breaks a song.

With all the BAD we've ranked over the years I'm surprised "E = MC^2" never got ranked on Alt, seems to be one of the songs I hear the most from them on 1st Wave and Spotify. Would have been probably the only song of theirs I'd have ranked outside of my bottom 20, too.

Nice to see "The Bottom Line" end up as one of BAD's best performances and almost make it out of the bottom 20. Too bad we never got to rank "E=MC^2" though. {? (STATS INDUSTRY)}

I'm not doing as well as I was hoping to do so far. Some of the songs remaining in my bottom twenty are by artists that I typically like but these songs are so BORING. I'm looking at you Squeeze, ABC and 10,000 Maniacs - even Prince. They can leave any moment now.

#90 "Bigger Stones" - Beat Farmers
The Beat Farmers are a fun, upbeat country rock band - a great treat if you appreciate that sort of thing. This is not one of their best tracks - the chorus is a little unsatisfying - but I still found it pretty enjoyable.
#89 "Universal Radio" - Nina Hagen
Nina Hagen brings a ton of personality and quirkiness to this song, which is definitely needed because the backing track here is about as bland as '80s synthpop gets.
#88 "? (Voices Of Modern Industry)" - Fishbone
You definitely have to give Fishbone credit for their creativity over the years, but honestly, I think their more straight-forward tracks are generally their better ones. Their more outlandish material can get - as disassociative noted - rather gimmicky.
#87 "World Destruction" - Time Zone
I personally liked the beat here and found the music pretty creative. The production is nicely dense and layered, especially for such a relatively early rap track. The rigid vocal flows, however, are very much of-their-era, and the fact that one of the vocalists is a non-rapper guest star probably didn't help in that regard.
#86 "Cheerleaders" - Minutemen
I wanted to like this for the new wave jerkiness and brass section, but man, those vocals. The repetition didn't help either.
#85 "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" - Bluebells
This was a pleasant poppy listen, although not a track that stands out a lot from the pack. Part of the vocal melody reminds me of another song I've heard, but I can't for the life of me remember what song it is.
#84 "Temptation" - Joan Armatrading
This is my first top 20 off the board, but I knew this one wasn't going far. I'm aware Joan Armatrading built her reputation on singer-songwriter material and that this radio-ready pop-rock track is likely a betrayal of that, but as someone not too familiar with her work, I thought this was an excellent song. The little synth flourishes provide plenty of great hooks, the production was timely but not tacky, and Armatrading nails the vocals.
#83 "Life In One Day" - Howard Jones
Yep, this is '80s music alright. It isn't bad - there are some pretty catchy melodies here in fact - but this song feels like the common denominator of about a dozen other synth-laden pop hits from this era.
#82 "I Love You Like A Ball & Chain" - Eurythmics
I think this is the worst Eurythmics song I've heard. Some nice bits of guitar by Dave Stewart here, but the chorus is flat and boring, the hooks are near nonexistent, and the structure feels very repetitive.
#81 "Bottom Line" - Big Audio Dynamite
A more or less okay track weighed down a little by some odd production choices (what's with that "the horses are on the track" bit?) While I don't dislike Big Audio Dynamite as much as some here, I think it's very safe to say that neither of The Clash's two primary songwriters benefited from the band's breakup.

Yea this song is aggressively bad, and I have no idea what it's doing in an Alternative rankdown anyway

Time to finally catch up!! Just two songs in the bottom 10 were not discoveries for me.
100. Tight Connection To My Heart (81): I liked the melody in the chorus, but his vocals were off-putting enough to make me rank it in my bottom 20. However, I don't think it's bottom 5 material.
99. I Got You Babe (70): This was a minor hit back home. It didn't make my personal chart as this was a year with lot of strong material, but I don't mind it. I'm not a huge fan of the original, and I kinda like this cover a bit more. I like the vibe, and Chrissie does a great job. Miles better than Breakfast in Bed.
98. Little Wild One - #5 (78): This was a pleasant song to me, but more mainstream, old style than modern rock, so I kinda get why it's in the bottom 5.
97. I Knew The Bride (72): Another pleasant one with a vibe I like, but it felt much more mainstream, old style rock, and a tiny bit generic.
96. This Is England (59): I remember hearing this song in the late 80s, and liking the chorus despite some of the messy production choices. I still like the main melody and chants enough to escape my bottom third.
95. Dark Night (54): I liked this one. Even though it has a much more mainstream than modern rock sound, it also has a darker vibe with more interesting attitude than other similar old-school rock tunes in this RD. Didn't think it was gonna leave this early...
94. Sun City (96): I found the music a bit generic and the melody quite forgettable, despite however number of famous people were singing this.
93. Hollywood (57): I really liked the bass work here, and the overall eclectic instrumental. Somewhat its messiness didn't pull me away, but sorta made it more interesting and appealing to me. The melody wasn't strong enough to make it to my top half, though.
92. When The Spell Is Broken (91): This was just too vanilla/boring, especially for a modern rock RD.
91. Method To My Madness (56): I really liked the slicker, slightly electronic production, and a bit of the chorus melody, but the vocals didn't help at all.
90. Bigger Stones (44): Very nice discovery. It reminded me of classic late 70s/ early 80s rock pop stuff, including Bruce Springsteen tunes. The harmonies were also quite appealing to me. Sad to see my first top half song.
89. Universal Radio (87): I've liked a few songs by her. The production was promising at the beginning, but then it turned into a real mess, vocally, instrumentally and melodically --except for the chorus that was catchy enough to escape my bottom 10.
88. ? (Modern Industry) (100): What the hell was this? Where is the melody? What are the distorted, annoying effects that come in the chorus? What are those rambling sounds that are supposed to be vocals in the verses? One of the few songs in this RD that I dislike.
87. World Destruction (99): Another song I didn't get. I disliked whatever main melody was in the chorus, whereas the verses melody sounded super generic, while vocals were bad, too. Clear bottom of the barrel for me.
86. Cheerleader (90): The instrumental and main melody were ok, but a bit too simple, and those vocals were a turnoff.
