Disgraceful
Love that people apparently think this is worse than the corny song that uses the f-slur several times for no reason other than 'casual flavoring'!

tomorrow, we will have another tie, another PPPPP, and many of us will be happy to see EIGHT bottom 5 rankings finally revealed, so not surprisingly we will see two more of our highest Standard Deviations

#50: "Break Them Down" - Graham Parker Perfect type of that heavy Guitar oriented album rock you would hear on the radio back then. A definite Modern Rock vibe, but heavily influenced with 80's Guitar hooks. Easily my new favorite Graham Parker song.
#49: "Boy (Go)" - Golden Palominos This is that type of melodically challenged song that I would tank any given year. Especially one that sounds like it has no business existing in 1985. Michael's vocals sound ahead of their time. (while that might be a good aspect with some listeners that is not a good thing with me). There is a reason songs like this didn't have a chance cruising onto the Pop Top 40.
#48: "Madame Butterfly" - Malcolm McLaren Interesting that our host thought this would anchor my tanked songs. Oddly enough the opera vocals where what kept this one out of my bottom 10. That ,and the female vocals. I generally prefer them in these Modern Rock lab created Frankenstein monster type experimenting songs.
#47: "Bittersweet" - Hoodoo Gurus The best part of this song is the Tom Petty "Jammin' Me" guitar strums. It was pretty hard to squeeze a few of this really good rockers into my top 50. I took a look at my list again, and maybe I could have gone on e higher over "This Time"? and that's a big maybe?
#46: "Paisley Park" - Prince Not the melodic fire I used to from Prince. Pretty simple instrumentally as well. Would have rather ranked "Raspberry Beret". Same production ,but better sugar coated.
#45: "Walls Come Tumbling Down" - Style Council I like this one. A little Jazz and Blue-Eyed soul mixed into their Sophistipop sound. Much like Wham injected into their singles.
#44: "Strength" - Alarm F U C K! There is no excuse why I should lose this top 10 song. What is it with you guys that The Alarm ends up getting the shaft? Any rank under a twenty is mind boggling. For future reference turn up the volume to the Maxx. It might help when you listen to these guitar fire songs. ;) BTW this is the version I ranked. The extended Power Mix version which frankly is the only version I need. It takes the main bass line ,and basically feeds it steroids.
#43: "When All's Well" - Everything But The Girl This one really surprised me. Much better than that 90's "Missing" song everyone but me seemed to love. They should have kept this style, and in some cases male vocals prevail. Sounds a bit like an upbeat version of all The Smiths' songs put together. Very nice indeed.
#42: "Stay" - Blue Nile This was a nice discovery. I really love the little beat throughout the song ,and the chorus is pretty lustrous. It's his vocals that seem to be stuck in the same key. No range what so ever. They probably had to lower the volume of the music to not drown him out? I think that chorus would have worked better with a stronger vocal delivery. Tom Bailey from Thompson Twins would have done wonders for the song.
#41: "Walk Away" - Sisters Of Mercy I usually rank this band higher with even top 10's ,but I needed more of the over the top level their songs usually go in. I still love the Goth vibe, but it's missing something. My guess would be they needed to maxx the bass. It's too low, and a song like this needs the bass to take center stage. For me it will always be more is better.

let's continue this ongoing project of mine. Some day I'll take all these mini reviews of mine and stick en in a thread tilted" Doc Indie Party Rock 's music reviews no one asked for, but exist anyway.' Take The Skinheads Bowling - Camper Van BeethovenThis was a first time listen. Are we sure this isn't from 1994?. Anyway it wasn't all that bad. The lyrics were kind of silly but fetching. "There's not a line that goes here that rhymes with anything". I can appreciate something like that if done in good fun. Baltimora - Tarzan BoyYou know this is my favorite song of the entire night. Italo disco goes to the top of the tops. I remember loving this the first time I heard it. Slow BPms, but they really push forward the synths inserts in the background. The whoa whoa whoa's were the magic of the song. Easily a top 5 on my list. BTW Baltimora was not a one time wonder. "Juke Box Boy" and "Woody Boogie" were chart toppers in Italy as well. They were basically the same song (What Italo Disco song doesn't sound like 100 others) , but that was the talent of the genre. Changing a single key here ,and there, and fooling us into thinking we are listening to a different song. "Woody Boogie" is another song I would have ranked high if it had magically found its way onto this list. Alex Chilton - Tee Ni Nee Ni Noo (Tip On It)Didn't some band make a song about this guy? You what I'm thinking right? Huey Lewis and The News. This song had it's charm. Had some James Brown vibes with those Jazzy R&B horns. Harmonicas were nice. Actually a lot of sounds that kept me enticed. Those little guitars in the background could have broken into the Batman theme song, and it would have even been better. The Romantics - Test Of TimeAnother band that kinda got the shaft after they woke up from "Talking In Your Sleep"". I liked this song back then. Got the 45 and everything. Sounds more like "One In A Million" part II. Unfortunately the guitar solo brings the songs level a little down, and doesn't go with the light hearted Motown vibed music in the verses. I would have traded in the guitar solo for a brass solo instead. Green On Red - That's What Dreams Are ForThis one rides into that folky territory I care to not follow into. The vocals were a bit country, but not good Country. Sure contender for tank heaven on my list. Reivers - Things Don't ChangeThis was pretty good. Never heard of it until tonight. A nice mix of Heartland Rock and early IndieRock. The female backups were a bonus I wasn't expecting ,and really livened up the song's mood. David Bowie (w/ Pat Metheny)We will run into this duo on mainstream RD ,and frankly we should have ranked it here. At least it would have had a fighting chance on my list. Van Morrison - Tore Down Ala RimbaudNot a song for me. I have no idea what he is singing about ,and with the music being boring the lyrics just bring it down another notch closer to the tank range. Colonel Abrams - Trapped I dug this one. Sounded like a first time listen, but had quite a few Italo Disco vibes in the percussion and synths so I had to look him up, and sure enough I recalled his other hit "How Soon We Forget". A big airplay hit on KPWR. So actually this was a nice rediscovery for me. John Hiatt - UsualI hear Cowbell. I can't do much with his vocals, but I do really enjoy a heavy guitar oriented Bluesy Rock song. Even from Acts I don't usually care for. This one would have been cool for Mainstream Rock '85. Falco - Vienna CallingRight up there with "Tarzan Boy". A strong NRG beat through out the song. Catchy and mesmerizing at the same time. I had no idea what Falco's talkin' about, so I always just waited for the "whoawhoa part to join in. A want to remember a version with an actual buildup to a great outro, but i couldn't for the life of me find it on youtube.

#50 "Break Them Down" - Graham Parker
Musically, this is a nice sample of Graham Parker's Costello-esque style. However, those constant title drops got old pretty fast for me, and the song seems to have been more or less built on them.
#49 "Boy (Go)" - Golden Palominos
One of those tracks that I just don't get. Michael Stipe's vocals drone on and on and the music sounds like a generic backing track with some twangy guitar dubbed over it. For me, this is the audio equivalent of watching dry.
#48 "Madame Butterfly" - Malcolm McLaren
This is certainly unique; you have to give it that at least. The opening portion with Malcolm McLaren's spoken-word narration isn't particularly exciting, but the combination of opera, '80s synth-pop, and semi-rapped storytelling that follows is an interesting experience.
#47 "Bittersweet" - Hoodoo Gurus
Not much to say about this one - it's a perfectly fine college rock hit from the Hoodoo Gurus that sounds pretty much how you'd expect it to.
#46 "Paisley Park" - Prince
I really love the combination of psychedelia, '80 pop, and R&B that Prince had on Around the World in a Day. The way the warbled textures of the synths and guitar combine with Prince's lyrics and the playful backing vocals creates an uncanny feel to the entire piece.
#45 "Walls Come Tumbling Down" - Style Council
This track has a great combination of jazz, soul, and pop hooks packed together in one high energy, peppy performance. One of the best sophisti-pop tracks of the year in my opinion.
#44 "Strength" - Alarm
I'm pretty surprised to see this one go out so soon, especially given how well it fits the format. There's a strong drama flair to the piece that's elevated by the excellent production work, plus a bit solid guitar slashing to match.
#43 "When All's Well" - Everything But The Girl
This sort of sophisti-pop style material was all over this top 100. This one has a nice chorus, but in a year like this, it needed to set itself apart from the pack more than it did.
#42 "Stay" - Blue Nile
Agreeing with Right Now here - this would have been a lot higher without the singer's tuneless warbling, as the music is quite lovely.
#41 "Walk Away" - Sisters Of Mercy
Between the cavernous soundscape, dark sonic textures, and moaning vocals, this is about as gothy sounding as it gets - got to love the atmosphere and feel of this one. The songwriting isn't the most unique perhaps, but the execution took it into my top half.

This song was a fine enough effort for poppier rankdowns, but here? the competition is way too good for it to be this high

you got two #40! my #1 made it to the top 40! (but I'm pretty sure will be the first to go out)
I always wonder, what are we ranking in these rankdowns... how much we like the song or how well the song reflects the genre? Example: Smooth Operator is a great song... but Alternative/Modern Rock?
