...All the R.E.M. songs that have made the top 10, and their best song can't do it too.
Straight-up just, this is inexcusable.

#20: "Secret" - OMD I always liked this song. To me it felt like if The Beatles had gone synthpop. Something about the synth progression brought Paul McCartney writing hook into mind. Anyway, OMD had two styles. Their more Modern Rock sounding New Wave style ,like "Electricity" ,and this synthpop geared style made for the Poptart charts.
#19: "Love Vigilantes" - New Order This song is quite nice. Actually has a more modern Rock sound that could fit nicely into a Smiths and Cure playlist, but I'll always prefer them in Synthpop mode.
#18: "Pop Life" - Prince I did not recall KROQ playing this. They used to play "Raspberry Beret" A better song , but even worse for the format. With that being said I liked this song a lot back then, so I squeezed it into my top 40.
#17: "Smooth Operator" - Sade I'm super surprised with a list this packed that this is Tom's #1. However it to is my favorite Sade song. Easily gets a slot in my top 40. Sultry, sexy but in a smooth way. The Jazzy elements actually compliment the song this time around. It's just a pleasant pleasant which I'm sure helped a lot of teenager guys get their women in the mood.
#16: "Boy With A Thorn In His Side" - Smiths This was a first time listen for me, but just like most of these Smiths/Morrissey discoveries I found this song to take in one of those cotton cloud rides to the sky. Such a gorgeous melody to sway to.
#15: "Alive And Kicking" - Simple Minds Easily my favorite Simple Minds song from that Album era. One of those songs where the chanting part before the chorus really gives it uplifting strength. Also one of the best 80's New wave songs featuring male/female backups
#14: "So In Love" - OMD Another OMD classic. Loved the brass compliments. This time sung by Andy. I actually preferred Andy doing the vocals for the band ,but I just ended up ling "Secret" so much more that year. Most likely because it was their first ballad type song I remember from them .
#13: "Driver 8" - REM For the life of me I could not recall ever hearing this song on the radio. Maybe I have, but it also didn't seem too memorable. It also featured the second backup vocals which I never thought made a good melodic combo. It sounds like a good vocalist Michael being backed up with a tone deaf vocalist. For all I know it's Michael overlapping his own vocals, but that's just how it sounds to me, and it kinda tunes me out.

Yo my #3 made the top 20, that's huge! I doubt it has the capacity for top 10, considering it's in way more famous company now, but the song didn't do as well in its previous rankdown so this is just as satisfying Wait it made the top 10 too?!?!? 2 3 4 5 8 9 10 16 37 40

oops where did these come from? #12: "And She Was" - Talking HeadsIt's alright. Always thought it was a little silly sounding in the instrumental melody. Not a bad little tune just a bit on the hokey side. #11: "Life In A Northern Town" - Dream AcademyThis one really felt out of place on the Mainstream Rock RD. Here is it's rightful home. Gave this one a much deserved 30+ slot upgrade. guess I'll conclude tonight's post the list of extras which include two of my personal #1 songs. Welcome To The Pleasuredome - Frankie Goes To HollywoodI don't think I've even seen that video, but i knew this song well. The song is basically the Relax melody in extended mode. Holly's vocal delivery was more of a semi spoken one, but it fit the instrumental compositions of their songs. There are all kinds of Epic New Wave sounds going on in this song. Definitely the kind of music soundtrack you would most likely hear if you attended one of Andy Worhol's get togethers at his famous Factory. Duran Duran - A View To A KillFirst of two songs I would have had to reserve a top 10 slot for. This song right here is pretty much the blue prints of every Duran Duran song thereafter. Something about their percussion arrangements played side by side with Jon's bass chords gave them an Exotic/ with an appetite for the musically erotic type sound that no other band could reproduce. Most of their songs could actually fill up a James Bond movie Soundtrack. Wouldn't be my #1 song , but dangerously close to it. Felony - Vigilante Pretty cool Neo punk style. A little like The Tubes but not as theatrical. I'm Not a fan of the spoken vocal delivery throughout the song, but the synth inserts liven up the atmosphere a bit. The only song I ever really loved from this band has to be the fantastic "The Fanatic". Adam Ant - Vive Le RockThe best part about any Adam Ant song has to be his vocal tones and delivery even when the song isn't all that great. Take this song for instance. Passable at best, but I never found it musically interesting. In fact the most drab part about this song are actually the guitar arrangements. It almost sounds like an Electric Light Orchestra production with Adam phoning in the vocals. Not a good combo and surely not a highlight for me. I'm just glad it didn't make the top 100. hate to semi tank Adam Ant. If you know what I mean. Nick Heyward - Warning SignA decent solo effort from Haircut One Hundred's leading man that progresses into a pretty crappy song. For me just a little too George Michael leaning, but without the George Michael awesomness in tones ,and production that would make this kind of song work. I like Nick's vocal tones a lot, but this song was not his best effort. I'm not even gonna touch on that miss placed rapping on the middle. They should have given me a warning sign that was coming. Chuck Brown - We Need Some MoneyI swear I read Chuck Berry. Anyway this took a wrong turn from some R&B jive chart. The music which was basically some cool guitars and brass here, and there was the only saving factor here. Hated the vocal arrangements as much as I hate government having you by the balls in debit credit cards. One of the dumbest songs I have heard in quite sometime. Big Boys - What's The Word?Dangerously similar to the travesty above it. I don't like this groove. It's too in your face, and feels like a fat lady giving you a lap dance. I'm glad this sound didn't catch on on the Modern Rock format. Gary Myrick - When Angels KissA rather pleasant melody for a first time listen, but not blowing my socks off. This guy used to have a cooler New Wave style to his music with The Figures. I also just learned he did some guitar on John Waite's ' No Brakes". Yeah that's probably what happened. He came back with some nice melodies to showcase, but didn't know how to fit them together. My advise go listen to "She talks In Stereo" or better yet go watch Valley Girl again. It's on the soundtrack. Beat Radio - Without YouThis is what happens when you name your band after a radio Station. I had no luck even finding the band. I found this Beat radio, but it's a different one. beatradio.org/November Group - Work That DreamThis was pretty cool Club music with Disco NRG elements. Reminds me of the 1986 band Trans Dance. Great percussion and vocals. Go West - We Close Our EyesSaved the best for last. I'm pretty sure I have praised this band on other rank downs as the British version of Hall & Oates and a much cooler version of Wham. Go West incorporated everything from pop to NRG to even Jazz elements in their unique brand of Sophistipop and this song has one of my favorites Synthpop chord progressions ever produced. I've only heard similar but much faster versions of it on Eurobeat. Also Peter Cox sounds like no other vocalist. Smooth tones ,but with good vocal range. and of course you have the iconic music video. Not strong enough to take my #1 position on the RD, but maybe my #2. I usually put a song no one expected at #2. Now for my bonus. The other two Go West singles that I also charted in 1985. "Call Me" also made the Hot 100 at #54 and "Eye To Eye" at #73. and now the one that KROQ never played but somehow won a slot in their YE countdown at #83. Not the first time KROQ did something like that. Eye To Eye

Welp I certainly cannot complain about this top 10. If "Driver 8" had made it over "Shout" this top 10 would've been just about perfect. I'm guessing that my #3 comes out on top though I really wouldn't be upset with any of these songs winning.

#20 "Secret" - OMD
While this group's hooks don't always land perfectly for me, few bands during this era did atmosphere better than OMD. A few of the synth parts here feel a bit superfluous, but the melodies and cavernous production work perfectly together.
#19 "Love Vigilantes" - New Order
Here we have a heartfelt track from New Order. I really like this band's eclectic take on the post-punk genre; their other hit is practically synth-pop but this one is pretty traditional for the genre. The songwriting is straight-forward and highly effective, with a strong sense of storytelling.
#18 "Pop Life" - Prince
Apparently I'm one of the few who likes Paisley Park more. Regardless, I'll certainly take this excellent fusion of funk rhythm and psychedelic production in the top 20.
#17 "Smooth Operator" - Sade
I don't think is bad on any objective level, but this kind of slow smooth jazz infused sophisti-pop just isn't my thing.
#16 "Boy With A Thorn In His Side" - Smiths
I've got mixed feelings on The Smiths, and this song is a good sample of both the good and bad I see in them. I love the lush jangle pop sound of their music, but something about Morrissey's vocals just irritates me at times.
#15 "Alive And Kicking" - Simple Minds
Simple Minds at their atmospheric best, fusing pop hooks and alternative sensibilities.
#14 "So In Love" - OMD
Similarly great atmosphere to their other hit this year, but they got a bit more from their vocalist on this track.
#13 "Driver 8" - REM
REM were still very much in their classic collage rock sound on this track, and they deliver some nicely done, straight-forward material here. If nothing else, their sound definitely stands out amongst all the sophisti-pop and synth material this year.
#12 "And She Was" - Talking Heads
Here's a fun little pop song from Talking Heads, and definitely one of their most straight-forward tracks. David Byrne's voice suits this song perfectly and that chorus is one of their all-time catchiest.
#11 "Life In A Northern Town" - Dream Academy
We had this in last year's mainstream rankdown, but it certainly feels more at home on modern rock. Great atmosphere and a mesmerizing chorus on this intensely sophisti-pop track.

any surprises? disappointments? predictions? As newpoweR stated earlier, the top of this rankdown has been getting very pop-friendly. I'm surprised to see so little sophisti-pop up here given how heavily the genre saturated this year. Also, I knew Tears for Fears would be popular, but I certainly wasn't expecting them to get all three of their songs in the top 10. I am very glad (and quite surprised) to see Propaganda make it this far though.

any surprises? disappointments? predictions? That's a whole lot of Tears for Fears in this Top 10. I get the love, but this is a bit much. Particularly at the expense of a little more diversity - no early REM? I agree with Right Now that Love Vigilantes >>>> Perfect Kiss. Love the starts to Both In Between Days and Perfect Kiss, but both the Cure and New Order have done better as these songs drag as they go on, IMO. I'm rooting for the most unique song in this top 10.

Remember when "Voices Carry" didn't even make the top 55 in the 1985 Hot 100 rankdown? What was this forum thinking back then, man
I'm not usually this petty but I do have to admit, after Doc took my #1 out of the top 10, I'm feeling a bit of that revenge vibe keeping his #1 out of the top 5, lol

Delighted to see Propaganda in the top 10. Double delighted that it gave me a perfect rank. I agree 3 TFF songs in the top 10 is a little too much...

Are Curt and Roland laying siege to the 1985 Modern Rock Rankdown?

I kind of love "Shout" and "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" equally, so again I gave the edge to the one I thought wouldn't do as well
Now, if my 46 could leave, I'd be fine with any winner - I've never cared about the artist behind the song
