EXTRAS: We are continuing with extras from artists who do NOT appear in our Top 100 this year and have only one extra.
featured video: A Day - Clan Of Xymox
Darkwave, which merges the goth of Bauhaus with the more rhythmic synth sound of Gary Numan, was birthed with this Amsterdam based band. The 'zine Sounds says of this song that it "suggests so many places, colours feelings and despairs that it is totally awe inspiring"

featured video: Love Like Blood - Killing Joke
Although the previous year's "Eighties" proved inspirational for Nirvana, it was LLB that was their big hit. Their only UK Top 20 & only song to chart outside of England (& the lower reaches of the US Dance chart) it went Top 10 in Netherlands & New Zealand and also charted in Germany and Ireland. This song's riffs & driving rhythm still hold up today.
Alphaville{Forever Young} Phil Oakey & Giorgio Moroder{Good Bye Bad Times} Kane Gang{Gun Law} Blue In Heaven{Julie Cries} Animotion{Let Him Go} Chris Isaak{Livin For Your Lover} Stevie Ray Vaughan{Looking Out The Window} Billy Bragg{Love Gets Dangerous} Nomads{Lowdown Shakin Chills (skip the few seconds of silence at the start of the video)} Flash & The Pan{Midnight Man}
Notice, only FOUR days left before the deadline

"Love Like Blood" would've been another contender for my #1 (and considering it was really close to winning my post-punk personal rankdown, might've contended for #1 in the results too)
"Midnight Man" is also excellent

gonna review a few i don't see on Mainstream.
The Reducers - The Fashion Of The Times First time ever listening to this band's music. Both songs have a nice post punk sound to them. A little Plimsouls mixed with The Clash. I enjoyed "Let's Go" for the emphasis on the vocals. Gave the post punk vibe an even stronger vibe with some Go -Go's uptempo melodies.
Suzzanne Vega Knight Moves - This Artists music doesn't really inspire 80's in me. Sounds like she was writing 90's music in the 80's. Pleasant ,but doesn't really move me. Marlene On The Wall - Music is pleasant , but I have the same issue with it sounding too 90's. The 90's era for the most part sounded rather simplistic musically to me ,and I was always for the louder over the top styles.
On a different note. I bet both these songs would slay on the rest of the PULSE lists.
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers It Ain't Nothing To Me - Thankfully we get to rank "Don't Come Around....) on mainstream. This other song sounds like a first time listen. I didn't give this record too much play since I had the two singles on 45'. The studio version sounds a lot cleaner to me. The Tom Petty album sound comes alive and gives the song a more 'Hard Promises' feel to it. Good song. Felt good for Mainstream not Modern Rock.
Wang Chung Fire In The Twilight Guess I've covered this song before. One of my favorite aggressive New Wave style songs from the band. Loved where they inserted it in Breakfast Club. It certainly has a running feel to it. It also has a cool driving Miami Vice vibe to it. It would have easily been in my top 20 here and on mainstream rock rds. WOW! what was that 'Videodrome" Hi-NRG song at the end of the video. To Live and Die In L.A. From the film of the same name this one has a different vive all together. A slower mood like Thompson Twins "Doctor Doctor" .Another song I would have slotted really high on this RD.
A few extras of my own from 1985. I feel Italo Disco and Hi-NRG would best fit in the Modern Rock format since a few songs did actually cruise over. The genre was also at it's height in the mid 80's.
Miko Mission - How Old Are You? This one has Italo with some New Wave synth melodies like Trans-X who actually got airplay on KROQ and 91x.
Ken Laszlo - Hey Hey Guy Real name Gianni Corraini. this is perhaps his most known hit besides "Tonight". Gianni Corraini went on to have many more Hi-NRG aliases and hits in the 90's.
Radiorama - Desire Live version of the immortal Radiorama performing "Desire". Rarely did the actual vocalists perform on stage. I forget the name of the performers, but the actual male vocalist is Mauro Farina. This one had a darker Italo vibe to it.
Aleph - Fly To Me This one had the DOA Hi-NRG style which became the basis for 90's Japanese Eurobeat. That's actually a young Dave Rodgers performing the song on the Italian version of Top of The Pops. It's just a promo edit, but this one is a Hi-NRG masterpiece in it's original extended version.

featured video: Opportunities (Let's Make Lots Of Money) - Pet Shop Boys
Often overshadowed by the behemoth which is WEG, Opportunities eventually hit the top 40 in a dozen countries across the globe. Its original release however climbed only as high as 63 in Australia and missing the UK chart altogether. But it did get Modern Rock airplay & two video releases (the original version featured here).
Culture Club{Mistake #3} Dukes Of The Stratosphear (aka XTC){Mole From The Ministry} Cruzados{Motorcycle Girl} Lou Reed{My Love Is Chemical} General Public{Never You Done That} Marti Jones{Neverland} TSOL{Nothing For You} Chameleons{On The Beach} Roman Holiday{One Foot Back In The Door} Murray Head{One Night In Bangkok} Notice, only TWO days left before the deadline

Great set of extras with a couple of extraordinary first time listens. Elton John with Millie Jackson - Act Of WarI always liked this song. It's aggressive and has a really great dance beat. The guitars are great. They almost sound like Steve Stevens giving it a Billy idol vibe at the same time. This is another song that would have been fun to see it perform on this RD. I'm thinking a definite top 50 from my part. A Drop In The Grey - All The SameFirst time listen. What a fantastic song. Has an undisputable Spanish rock vibe all the way through. You can even hear a little of "Hombre Lobo En Paris". It probably would have been my second favorite first time listen ,and a very high ranked song on my list. Download/check. John Paul Jones - Bad ChildThere is that Italo Disco vibe I was talking about last night. damn I wish this one had made the list, and I don't even think I had this one in my collection. That's how much of an impact this song just did. This could have easily been Ken Laszlo or Radiorama song. The five minute plus run time gives it justice. How high would I have ranked this jam? Jet Black Berries - Bad HombreGreat band name. Has some Los Lobos vibes. Not quite my groove, but I also hear some Social Distortion so I'll give it a thumbs up. Love And Rockets - Ball Of Confusion'Don't get the big deal over this band. This is one of the better ones I've heard. The way the guitars are played is quite enticing. Definitely has a 70's Psychedelic vibe like "Spirit In The Sky" just not as cool. At least it's way better than that "So Alive" hit they had. Sly & Robbie - Bass and TroubleThis isn't really my groove. Sounds like Art of Noize meets Run DMC ,and it was way too long. I like the brass, but that's about it. The Replacements - Bastards of YoungHere is one of those bands PULSE really likes. I can take them ,or leave them. This one is bit more on the melodic side. I like that. Gino Vanelli - Black CarsI could have sworn this guy was the son of a famous Italian Wise Guy. Turns out he is in fact Canadian. I didn't expect to see this melodic wonder here. This one is strictly for the Top 40 kids like me. The chorus itself isn't all that, but that synth beat leading to it. Priceless. Would have given this one a top 50 rank.

Yeah, same here! I couldn’t resist the opportunity of joining the Martina McBride rankdown after doing Carrie’s, which has meant spending time on both RDs in the past couple of weeks. And last week I had to work in the wee hours I’ve grouped half of the songs in this modern rock RD, and I’ve listened to a total 2/3 of songs, so it’d be great to have extra weekend time to finish it.

It's a crime that we don't get to rank this gem! Chrissy Amphlett led this Aussie band and this was their only song to chart in the US until she started touching herself in the '90s. It was their highest charting single in NZ and a big hit in their home country.
Cult{Rain} Tom Waits{Rain Dogs} John Mellencamp{Rain On The Scarecrow} Tupelo Chain Sex{Revolution Will Be Televised} Nik Kershaw{Riddle} Dance Society{Say It Again} Mike + The Mechanics{Silent Running} Lime Spiders{Slave Girl} Belouis Some{Some People} Fleshtones{Super Rock Medley} Notice, I am extending the deadline to the end of the weekend (Sunday 10/18 at 11:59 pm PT), so now only THREE days left before the deadline

Another night of extras:
John Palumbo - Blowing Up Detroit A definite first time listen. This sounded like one of those over the top poprock jams that you could find on a 80's action flick soundtrack. The huge percussion sounds really reel me in. Youtube's Retrowave channel has a lot of songs with this vibe. Most of it instrumental.
Jane Wiedlin - Blue Kiss This song sounded really lightweight. It never really did anything for me. I liked her with Sparks on "Cool Places". Makes you wonder why Jane didn't keep releasing stuff in the 90's. This sounds like a early 90's melody wise.
Milkshakes - Bo Diddlus sounds like it was released two decades too late. The music is alright for one of those at the hop nights.
Cheech Marin - Born In East LA I loved the Cheech and Chong movies, and the lyrics are somewhat funny, but this is as Modern Rock as half the songs on today's Alternative chart.
Corey Hart - Boy In The Box ah.. Wrong video and song. This is the real video. Also this is a great song with many music vibes from exotic far east melodies to Italo disco synths in the chorus. My favorite next to "Sunglasses At Night". This would have been in my top 20 just because it's so unique and mystical.
Broken Wings - Mr Mister This is a spectacular Sophistipop song. Very unique in sound and with Tears For Fears like Modern Rock elements. Richard Page sounds like he had some amazing vocal range. The build up of the song together with his vocals was the magic of this song. There was nothing quite like it on the radio. So popular it was even covered by Boy in Hi-NRG fashion in 1991. Also I wouldn't say they were never heard from again. That might be true chartwise, but they did release an album strictly for the fans in 2010. You might like the one free download they released. It's the one I also charted. Has that same unique sound they had back in '85.
Linda Thompson - Can't Stop The Girl For a second I thought I read Lea Thompson. LOL! This has some Country elements. Not a bad song. For some reason I hear Slade's "Run Runaway" in the chorus. Part of the reason I like this song.
Gene Loves Jezebel - Cow So Gene Loves Jezebel released a few songs I never heard of. I love the sitar in this song. Together with that psychedelic sound gives this a nice Fobia Spanish Rock sound.

I can have this done by Sunday night. It could be early in the evening, or it could be overnight, but I do intend to do this. I've been unexpectedly busy at work since the beginning of the month, and it all depends on how late I end up having to work on Sunday. Thankfully, I have Monday off, so I know I can focus on this once I get home Sunday night. Expect my list sometime between 9PM Sunday and 3AM Monday, EDT.

EXTRAS: We are continuing with extras from artists who do NOT appear in our Top 100 this year and have only one extra.
featured video: Take The Skinheads Bowling - Camper Van Beethoven
This song is a staple of classic alternative & yet another head-scratcher at how it missed our rankdown. David Lowery and the band hail from Santa Cruz, CA. This song was featured in the movie Bowling For Columbine & was covered by Manic Street Preachers. This did become an indie hit in the UK climbing up to #8, but Lowery was confounded that this would prove so popular, he says he would've expected the hit from this album to be "Where The Hell Is Bill"
Baltimora{Tarzan Boy} Alex Chilton{Tee Ni Nee Ni Noo (Tip On It)} Romantics{Test Of Time} Green On Red{That's What Dreams Are For} Reivers{Things Don't Change} David Bowie (w/ Pat Metheny){This Is Not America} Van Morrison{Tore Down Ala Rimbaud} Colonel Abrams{Trapped} John Hiatt{Usual} Falco{Vienna Calling} Notice, We are up to nine lists...i'm hoping to get up to 15. But we have only TWO days left before the deadline - let me know if you need a further extension.

Clan of Xymox - A DayI didn't know of this song back then. It came to me much later in life with a bunch of other Darkwave songs. Love the fast bassline. Reminds me of early Berlin. It really reminds me of that new Powerman 500 album I got into this week. The Del Fuegos - Don't Run WildThese guys look and sound like Roman Holiday. I like the style of songs, but this one isn't all that memorable. The chorus isn't even trying to be the high part of the song. Danny & Dusty - Song For The DreamersSounds like one of those songs I would slot in bottom 20. It isn't bad, just nothing that keeps me on my toes. Vocals are pretty plain. Sorry can't compare to any band, cause I usually don't listen to this style. Thought - Eight Miles HighNever heard this version. It isn't all that different from The Byrds. You would think that modern 80's sounds would give it a stronger vibe, but somehow the original is still a lot stronger with the guitars. They sound more raw. Sometimes raw is better than clean. Arcadia - Election DayCovered this one. Pretty much Duran Duran on spectacular mode. Kid Creole & Coconuts - EndicottKid Creole and The Coconuts suddenly went darkwave on me. However this is the actual song. It's a good song. Funky and Groovy. Very retro sounding. I don't have the slightest idea who Endicott is, but it sounds pretty cool to be him/it/?. The Lucy Show - Ephemeral (This is no Heaven)First time listen. Now this is the kind of Modern Rock I like to be introduced to. Melodic, great vocals, and still a bit psychedelic and dark. A nice balance of what I like to listen to on Modern Rock besides the top 40 synthpop hits. Ministry - Everyday Is HalloweenYou should have saved this one for Halloween night reveals. Anyway this is one of the songs when I was a Ministry fan. Love the hypnotic bassline of the song. The chorus has early Pet Shop Boys vocals vibes. This band always had a clubby vibe to their music, but it sounded better in the 80's. Top 20 on my list for sure. Men At Work - Everything I NeedFor me this band had two great years. '82 and '83. After that they inexplicably lost the magic of their music. I never liked this song. Funny thing this song isn't too different from "Who Can It Be Now" in musical form, but somehow falls flat at every turn. There were 5 singles off this album and I cannot for the life of me recall anything memorable about any of them. Needless to say they broke up after this flop album era, right? The Truth - Exception of LoveI wanna say I've heard this band before. They have a sort of The Style Council sound. This song is alright. Doesn't do much for me on a big 80's chorus level, but I'm sure it has fans? second jam packed batch .Killing Joke - Love Like BloodSounds like a first time listen. I only knew "Eightees" and "Follow The Leaders". This song sounds a bit more subdued for them. Not a bad first time listen, and his vocals are showcased nicely in this more mellow New Wave style, but this just made me wanna go back to the more aggressive New Wave style of "Follow The Leaders". Alphaville - Forever YoungJust so you all know this song is iconic over here. I ended up liking it so much more as the years progressed. a-ha made this atmospheric synthpop style much more popular too. I like it because it brings Synthpop to an almost epic Ballad level and the lyrics are perfect. I prefer "Big In Japan", because well you know I just do. ;) Phil Oakey & Giorgio Moroder - Good Bye Bad TimesI forget if this was from 'Electric Dreams' film? This to me is a perfect song. You had the master Moroder throw his Disco NRG beats ,and one of my favorite New Wave vocalists at the time at the helm. The synth progression is done up in beautiful Italo Disco style and Phillip Oakey's vocals are like a fashion sense that never went out of style. The Kane Gang - Gun LawI hardly recall this band's name, but the music sounds like something I would definitely jump on. I hear some dancepop elements that could have given them a few top 40 hits as well. Blue In Heaven - Julie CriesThe music is pretty good. Not a fan of his vocal tones. The song kinda sounds like it could have cruised over to the 90's. Animotion - Let Him GoI much more enjoyed the real Animotion as opposed to the Cythnia Rhodes version. This rocked . I loved this faster New Wave style with Hi NRG elements. That last "GOOOOOOOOOOOOO' introduces a killer cool bassline found in Sa-Fire's "Don't Break My Heart" giving the song a bit of Freestyle as well. Man we were seriously robbed from ranking some of the best songs for 1985. Chris Isaak - Livin For Your LoverI always knew this guy struck me as a fan of rock a billy. This one could have been featured on an Elvis Hawaiian Jamboree. This song isn't bad actually. I like how his low vocal tones sound with this music. This might be my favorite from him yet. It's definitely a fun one. The Nomads - Lowdown Shakin ChillsSkipping to this one because it has a Morrison thing going on in the vocals. Love the psychedelic 60's. The guitarists didn't even really have to stick with the melody so long as they cranked their fingers away. This definitely rocks in my direction. Flash & The Pan - Midnight ManThis band had a unique sound of their own. This song did little to entice me. Weak vocals. I checked out some other songs from them. They Kinda sound like Abba meets Murray Head's speaking vocals. Not my thing. The music is pleasant enough, but I didn't think these songs really fit together. Way too Proggy for me. I found to only like one titled "Early Morning Wake Up Call " Its a faster New Wave deal, but still has some offputting vocals. I hate ending up on a sour note when I do these so I'm grabbing The Pet Shop Boys songs from the next batch.Pet Shop Boys - Opportunities (Let's Make Lots Of Money) vers. 1First off its a crime we didn't get to rank this one. I have a strong feeling that if Billboard had started up The Modern Rock charts in 1985 we would be ranking a whole set of different songs. This one included. This version is ok. It's missing the meat on the rind. It has the looks but not the hooks. The second version is much more well put together. Basically the same percussion which really works on this song, but the instrumental connections from verse to bridge to chorus fit so much better in the second version. Also the ending of vers.2 is much more commanding. This was my favorite Pet Shop Boys song until "New York City Boy" came out years later. True story.

EXTRAS: And now we conclude with our final set of Extras. Yet again, from artists who do NOT appear in our Top 100 this year and have only one extra.
featured video: Welcome To The Pleasuredome - Frankie Goes To Hollywood
While we don't get to rank this one, we will be seeing FG2H songs in the '84 Modern Rock rankdown. While moderately charting in the US, they were a pop culture phenomenon in the UK. After three #1 smashes, this song peaked at #2 across the pond. From that height, they fell hard with their follow-up album Liverpool (which proved to be their last) after which Holly Johnson left for a solo career.
Duran Duran{View To A Kill} Felony{Vigilante} Adam Ant{Vive Le Rock} Nick Heyward{Warning Sign} Go West{We Close Our Eyes} Chuck Brown{We Need Some Money} Big Boys{What's The Word?} Gary Myrick{When Angels Kiss} Beat Radio{Without You}(i can't find this song - can you? November Group{Work That Dream} Notice, we are only hours away from our deadline, but we have a few people who are still working on their lists, so I will accept any list that arrives within the next 36 hours while I tabulate the lists I have. I anticipate our first set of reveals to be presented on Wednesday evening.
