The fact the Empress of Soul doesn't have an artist discussion thread is so blasphemous. Do better, Pulse!

Didn't expect an iTunes flood but nice to see Claudine at #5 on iTunes R&B along with several GH compilations at 10, 15 and 18.

It's crazy that majority of her success came from her time with the Pips and she doesn't have nearly as many solo hits. I would love to hear about her journey as a solo artist and the gaps she had between solo projects. Also, with her and Patti on the same label at the time (MCA) and Patti having a pretty good commercial run when Gladys wasn't seeing as much success. In 94 Patti had a top 10 R&B hit with "right kinda lover" and Gladys barely went top 30 with the babyface record " i don't want to know". I wonder if MCA decided to push 1 more than the other.

I thought they wouldβve at least played Men since itβs technically her biggest solo hit. Just for You is a classic IMO and both singles shouldβve been top-10 smashes.

I thought "I don't want to know" was a bigger hit than it actually was. I was surprised to see it not even make top 30 R&B. I feel like I heard that song all the time. The album did go Gold though. The "At Last" album had some songs that sounded like potential hits. I don't know what happened with that project. Did they even release a single?

MCA was fizzling out at that time, following corporate shakeups which included an acquisition by Seagram, which subsequently acquired PolyGram, and then sold off its music holdings to Vivendi. In 2000, I think Gladys' At Last and Patti's When A Women Loves albums both got lost in the shuffle while all of that was happening.

If I Were Your Woman II and I Said You Lied were both singles but neither got a video; IIWYM hit #11 on Urban AC.

Considering that wasn't long before her recorded cover of "The Way We Were," I have to believe this was the inspiration. Anyway, I could watch her do that every year!

We saw the Empress of Soul tonight at the State Theatre in Easton. Lordy, what a legend. That voice just hits you. I teared up when she sang "In This Life," as did my partner. Hearing her "Neither One Of us..."
She told a story of a girl whose music she loved, and happened to walk by where she was, and it was Barbra Streisand,. She said she walked by and asked ion they could sing a song- and it was "I Can't Make You Love Me." And she said Babs again after singingthe song. Did she actually mean Barbra?
