How did California Dreaming not make #1. Such a great song.

When the Hot 100 debuted in August 1958, both the A and B sides of singles were capable of charting separately.   If a B side of a single had enough points to chart on its own, it would chart on its own.   This continued until the last week of November 1969 when Billboard discontinued its practice of charting A and B sides of singles separately.   From then on, if a B side of a single had enough points, it would simple be added to the A side's points and they would chart as a double-sided hit.

Under the old rule, both A side "Come Together" and B side "Something" entered the Hot 100 on their own.  But separately neither one had enough points to get to the #1 spot.   Then came the week of November 29th, 1969, both sides of the single had their points added to each other and together they had enough points to top the Hot 100 for 1 week as double-sided hit Come Together/Something."

So it was basically just luck that the Beatles' single was in that position that they benefited when the rule change took place at the end of November 1969.

"Something" is just as much an official #1 Hot 100 hit as "Come Together."



As for your other questions about Billboard replacing certain number #1 year end singles with other year end singles, I don't really know why that was done except to say that maybe they replaced "Surfin' USA" with "Sugar Shack" because the latter song was also a #1 hit on the Hot 100 and the former was not.
 
But that doesn't explain why "California Dreamin" was replaced with "Wooley Bully" except that maybe the former song only got to #4 on the Hot 100, while the latter song managed to get to #2, although neither one of them made it to the top.

Just like One Sweet Day was the original Song of the Decade, then they claimed How Do I Live, and now they even claim Smooth. 

Who knows what they'll claim down the line once more.

"California Dreamin'" was originally the #1 song for 1966, not '65 - so it was replaced by a fellow #1 song, "Ballad of the Green Berets". I do think some of their reasoning might have to do with those original year-end #1's only charting as high as #3 and #4, which seems odd. "Wooly Bully", "Breathe" and "Hanging by a Moment" at least came closer and, if I'm not mistaken, even spent multiple weeks at #2? Not sure.

Ah, I see. I just checked the original magazines and basically, "Come Together" peaked at #2, "Something" at #3 (both on November 15, 1969), and "Come Together/Something" at #1 (2 weeks later). Interesting. I wonder if Billboard changed its rules to benefit the Beatles and ensure they got that 18th #1 to surpass Elvis, since they were matched as of "Suspicious Minds" just a few weeks before. I mean, on Nov. 22, "Come Together" had dropped to #7! Then the new rule kicks in and it rises to #1. 

Damn, Billboard is shady huh? Like I said before, I sooooooo want an exposé on all the stuff they've done over the years to manipulate the charts. I wouldn't even be angry about it, I'm just so darn curious. #Justice4BakerStreet

It's an industry magazine and if that's what was best or what the industry wanted that's what probably happened....
It's not all about popularity.
The music industry has proven that many times and that's who Billboard looks too to create their charts.

Re: The Come Together / Something controversy: This was during the brief period of time that the Hot 100 did not use Airplay for the top half of the chart. Because both sides of the Beatles record were so hot nationally at that time, retailers generally reported the single as one entity in their lists to Billboard, creating this dilemma. (Not a big deal in the 50s with Elvis’ songs as differing airplay of HIS double sided hits clearly defined which side was more popular)

When the Hot 100 debuted in August 1958, both the A and B sides of singles were capable of charting separately.   If a B side of a single had enough points to chart on its own, it would chart on its own.   This continued until the last week of November 1969 when Billboard discontinued its practice of charting A and B sides of singles separately.   From then on, if a B side of a single had enough points, it would simple be added to the A side's points and they would chart as a double-sided hit.

Under the old rule, both A side "Come Together" and B side "Something" entered the Hot 100 on their own.  But separately neither one had enough points to get to the #1 spot.   Then came the week of November 29th, 1969, both sides of the single had their points added to each other and together they had enough points to top the Hot 100 for 1 week as double-sided hit Come Together/Something."

So it was basically just luck that the Beatles' single was in that position that they benefited when the rule change took place at the end of November 1969.

"Something" is just as much an official #1 Hot 100 hit as "Come Together."

Ah, I see. I just checked the original magazines and basically, "Come Together" peaked at #2, "Something" at #3 (both on November 15, 1969), and "Come Together/Something" at #1 (2 weeks later). Interesting. I wonder if Billboard changed its rules to benefit the Beatles and ensure they got that 18th #1 to surpass Elvis, since they were matched as of "Suspicious Minds" just a few weeks before. I mean, on Nov. 22, "Come Together" had dropped to #7! Then the new rule kicks in and it rises to #1. 

Damn, Billboard is shady huh? Like I said before, I sooooooo want an exposé on all the stuff they've done over the years to manipulate the charts. I wouldn't even be angry about it, I'm just so darn curious. #Justice4BakerStreet

I don't think there was anything shady about it.  I don't think Billboard would just go and change an 11 year old rule just so the Beatles could collect an 18th #1 hit.  Billboard history seems to show that they think long and hard (sometimes too long for the fans) before making major rule changes to the charts and don't just do it overnight.  I believe the change of adding the points of A and B sides of double sided hit singles was probably something that had been in the works for awhile.

I believe it was just coincidence and good fortune that the Beatles' were the major beneficiaries of that particular rule change; but of course, as always, YMMV.
