Born Carolina Giraldo Rivera in Medellín in 1991, she was obsessed with music from age 5, following in the footsteps of her musician father. She released her first single at 16 and went on to study music at the University of Antioquia. But despite a turn on El Factor X in 2010 and numerous backing gigs, G couldn’t seem to move beyond supporting roles—doors slammed whenever she, as a woman, tried to get ahead in the male-dominated world of reggaetón. Frustrated, she moved to New York City to study English, but she couldn’t bury her musical ambitions. While there, she resolved to become both an artist and a savvy businesswoman. She returned to Medellín, singing covers and sharing them online while seeking new opportunities. Her renewed focus paid off: she signed to Universal Latino in 2016. Her 2017 collaboration with Bad Bunny, “Ahora Me Llama”, blew up, setting the stage for the Latin trap masterpiece Unstoppable, an album that established her as both an excellent singer and a rapper with a cool and collected flow that calls to mind greats like Spain’s Mala Rodríguez. Collaborations with Nicki Minaj and Quavo ensued, and 2019’s follow-up, Ocean, saw KAROL G branching out with next-level trap, sinuous dance music and persuasive ballads, cementing her as one of Latin music’s most versatile and talented artists.

Karol G Achieves Rare Feat at No. 1 on Latin Airplay Chart With 'Ay, Dios Mio!'

The Colombian becomes the first female artist to Top Latin Airplay chart without a collaborative act in 2020.

Karol G earns her eighth No. 1 on the Latin Airplay chart, as “Ay Dios Mio” jumps 6-1 on the Oct. 10 survey.

With the song’s coronation, Karol G becomes the first female artist to lead the chart in 2020 without a collaborative act. The last woman to achieve the feat was Natti Natasha with “Me Gusta” (May 18, 2019-dated list).

“Ay, Dios Mío!” hits No. 1 assisted by a 30 percent increase in audience impressions, to 11 million, earned in the week ending Oct. 4, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.

Notably, out of the 32 No. 1 titles on Latin Airplay in 2020, 15 were credited to just one act, while the other 17 were billed to multiple artists, and, of the 15 No. 1s by just one act, 14 were by men or all-male groups.

Elsewhere on the charts, “Ay, Dios Mío!” also arrives at the summit on both Latin Rhythm Airplay and Latin Pop Airplay, Karol’s eighth and fourth leader, respectively.

Gains at the Latin Airplay sector help push “Ay, Dios Mío!” upward on Hot Latin Songs, which combines airplay, streaming data and digital sales. The track lifts 7-5 and takes the Greatest Gainer/ Airplay honor.

“Ay, Dios Mío!,” meanwhile makes its first appearance on the all-genre Hot 100 chart, arriving at No, 94.
