This set of reveals was better than I expected, though I'm a bit sad about "Kiss From A Rose", since it seemed like the best shot to prevent a certain song from winning.
10. "Freak Like Me" [29]: Not surprised that this is the first one out, and also not complaining. A great discovery that I can go back to, but also one of the less great songs in this top ten, IMO.
9. "I Know" [35]: This definitely grew on me a lot. I used to not like it much, but now I can really appreciate the guitar and vocals. I still feel like there's something missing in this song, and parts of it sound kinda monotonous to me. I'm surprised it was that huge of a hit on pop radio (ten weeks at number one).
8. "Kiss From A Rose" [4]: I thought this was a lock for top five, and a serious contender to win. I didn't think that many people would tank it. :( I'm rooting for you now, TLC (since Coolio obviously won't win it)! Please, come through...
7. "Secret" [25]: This is a pleasant surprise! I also thought this was a lock for the top five, and I ranked this a bit higher this time around, but after it won in 1994 (and robbed "Linger"), I'm definitely not complaining about this missing the top five, especially since it was one of my lower ranks in our top ten, too. Still, I can't deny that this is a great song from Madonna.
6. "This Is How We Do It" [9]: Definitely an unexpectedly high placement for this, but I guess I'm not complaining! This is a 90's jam for the ages, and I can't believe I ranked it in my bottom half in the 90's decade-end rankdown. I have lots of ranks there that I regret, but my #1 is definitely not one of them... :sip2:
Speaking of which, I'm really glad my #1 made the top 5, even though I can't see it winning. Remaining ranks: 1, 2, 8, 17, 32. Great top 5, as long as anything but my #32 wins (no prizes for guessing what it is :sip2). Watch as I just jinxed it... I just want something in my top ten to win, since I came so close in the previous two rakdowns.

My prediction:
5. "Runaway" 4. "Gangsta's Paradise" 3. "Creep" 2. "Fantasy" 1. "Waterfalls"
"Runaway" is kind of a wild card; I wouldn't be all that surprised if it somehow wins (especially since "If" somehow pulled it off in 1993). That wouldn't bode well for breaking my curse, though. Of course, I can also see "Fantasy" taking it. I lowkey hope that's what Anthony's 105 is. Three of these are in my top ten, so all I ask is for one of them to win. Please? :)

Top 5 tomorrow. You ready?!
The Top 5 (in alphabetical order)
"Creep" - TLC "Fantasy" - Mariah Carey "Gangsta's Paradise" - Coolio ft. L.V. "Runaway" - Janet Jackson "Waterfalls" - TLC
I like all of these songs, so I'll be satisfied regardless of who wins.

I can see either "Waterfalls", "Fantasy", or "Gangsta's Paradise" winning - three songs that are both nearly unanimously beloved and firmly ingrained in public consciousness. Mark my words, this is going to be the likely top 3. 😉 As much as I'd love for "Gangsta's Paradise" to make the top 3, I'm not expecting it to, because ":( rap music :(" (even though I know people who generally dislike rap music that admitted to liking that song). I'm just glad it made it this far.

Sorry for spamming the thread, but I just noticed that all of the top 3 on the year-end chart made the top 5 on the rankdown. Is this the first time this has happened? I can't complain, though, with how amazing the top 3 year-end Hot 100 songs of 1995 were. :)

5, 6, 9, 10, 39. All great songs, so I’d be fine with any of these songs winning (although if my #5 doesn’t rank at #5, and I don’t think it will, that’ll mean 0 perfect rankings for me).

Do yourself a favor and find Jesus. By the way, Death Cab for Cutie released a lovely cover of Waterfalls. I believe it was made available on streaming services this week to celebrate this rankdown :) I'm happy with any of the two remaining songs winning but I prefer Mariah. I would have picked Coolio in 1995.

I forgot to vote for this, but man 1995 was a killer year for singles. I love the Grammys ROTY line-up, and we see three of those songs in the top 5 here.

The Top 2
So here we are again at the end of another one of my Billboard rankdowns.
1995 is one of my favorite (if not favorite) years in music, ever. I was 13/14 when these songs hit and I have so many memories attached to so many of these songs. The next few rankdowns will also be filled with nostalgia for me.
At the outset I knew the Top 5 that we ended up with would be popular, they all remain in heavy rotation today and well, they're awesome. Can't say there's a real dud in the entire Top 70 and even then there are some strong ones below that mark.
So, here we go, the Top 2. I remember the first time I heard "Fantasy" and thought that it already sounded like a classic. It was undeniable. The perfect mix of POP/R&B and VOCALS. I can't say she's done an up-tempo since that tops it. Which is fine. When you have a song this good in your catalogue who cares.
As for "Gangsta's Paradise", well, that one also hit in the fall of '95 when I was entering Grade 9 and it was EVERYWHERE. Love the song and love the movie it came from. Truly one of my favorite rap songs of all time.
Thank you all for coming along on this journey with me. It's been a slice and we'll be moving along to the Billboard 1996 Rankdown soon. More to come.
Big thank you once again to rowellfarm490 for those stats!

Debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 the week ending September 25, 1995 "Fantasy" was the first song ever to enter the chart at the summit by a female artist and only the second song to do so at that point in time. Released as the lead single from the album Daydream, it would remain at its peak for 8 weeks and would crack the Top 10 in over 15 other countries.

Delightfully surprised at "Gangsta's Paradise" winning. Such a terrific song that encapsulates some of the best aspects of rap music in the 90s (especially with the fantastic sampling of Stevie Wonder's "Pastime Paradise")
Congratulations!

i like the song, but i'm baffled at the obsession with and glorification of gangsters (in this and many other songs)...what did Al Capone ever do for Coolio? It's basically not about the man himself, but about the idea. In the second verse he straight out says that he is well educated but because of culture, both pop and street, all he can think of is the hustle and making money. In the framing of the song, he could've been successful no matter what he did, but he chose the streets because that is where his loyalty laid
