Having watched now the full thing in HD I can see why people were bored. There was nothing terrible about it, but conversely there was nothing memorable either.
The energy wasn't there tbh. And the sound was awful (at multiple points the sound drowned his vocals). At several points it felt like it was going to pick up but either nothing happened while he stood there ("I Feel It Coming") or he ended the track too soon ("Save Your Tears" sweetie I'm so sorry). BL was the best part by default.
I'm guessing the 7 million was used to build the stage and for COVID-related safety measures?
tl;dr it was no Maroon 5 or Timberlake mess but it was no Beyoncé or Gaga.

Yeah. Disappointed. I don't think he can command a stadium - he's just not that kind of artist.

My timeline is also full of negative feedback. I think last year's show was just too good. Opinion seems very divided from what I've seen. Bruno is trending because Weeknd made so many of us miss what a truly good male halftime performer looks like; but OTOH people who liked the show, really liked the show. I personally thought it was...ok. Weeknd has always been a lackluster performer so I didn't go into this with super high expectations in that regard. He has a great set of songs to work with though and I think I would have enjoyed it enough if I'd left it playing in the background while I was looking at another tab. He's not exactly known for his superior vocals so I wasn't too bothered by the janky audio tbh, lol. I was kind of conflicted on the set. This is where I was expecting him to go all out...it did feel like something more appropriate for an award show than a halftime show, but if it had been an award show I would have really, really loved the look/production value of it. So I don't know if I should be panning it or praising it. Overall it feels like he tried to serve a Katy Perry type of show where the production goes big to compensate for fact that he's not a natural performer, and it just didn't quite get there (the fact that he's got me appreciating 2015 Katy Perry, lawd). But Katy's show was really dope, she used every inch of her budget and that field, and she had great energy. Abel did what he could. If one was already a big fan of his then you got everything you could have hoped for from him. A lot of people on my timeline saying it’s the worst halftime show ever. I wonder why. Nah. That’s forever Justin Timberlake & Maroon 5. Abel needs to write Justin and Adam thank you letters because they guaranteed that there was no way The Weeknd was going to be the worst show ever.

He should have had a dance routine for I Can’t Feel My Face instead of the guys bumping each other. Overall, the set was great; however, it feels he shows up to sing and that’s it. There are missed opportunities with those guys in the background. I didn’t even finish the performance because I was bored.

I was disappointed. The set list was good, but I couldn't hear him well. There was some good visuals, but I didn't find The Weeknd himself all that dynamic. Having said that, I am rarely a fan of half time performances as playing in a stadium is just difficult.

Way better than JT and Maroon 5, nowhere near Gaga or last year’s masterpiece. I’d probably rank it 3rd out of the last 5 years. The stage part was ridiculously underwhelming, but of course I enjoyed the BL finale.

Anyway, just watched it finally and it was about what I expected: mediocre performance from a mediocre performer. I've seen other people touch on it as well but the audio was terrible and I couldn't even understand 90% of what he was singing and the stage was incredibly underwhelming. The part where he flung the handheld camera around while spinning in a circle was also a choice... and not a good one. Best part was the choreographed dance routine that happened before "Blinding Lights" started, and then it fell apart again when he came back out and started his high-pitched mumbling again.
I don't remember all the halftime shows super well but I feel like I recall Maroon 5's being at least a bit better than this, but I'll give that this may have had JT beat at least. Still, very underwhelming. But given that this was the halftime show that had to be during the pandemic, maybe it's for the best that it wasn't wasted on a much better artist.

This halftime show lacked energy! I thought he was gonna really bring it--especially after he publicly made a fuss about the lack of grammy love. I expected Abel to elevate his artistry with this show. All the build up and hype was a let down. Abel's setlist was fantastic but his performance of each song (except Blinding lights) was sooo underwhelming. Even Katy Perry's halftime show managed to have kick ass production and mad energy. Wow...

I honestly don't know what people were expecting from a Superbowl half time show especially during a pandemic. I mean, there are only so many surprises and technological marvels that can be incorporated. It's exhausting. The people on my FB feed feel this sense of entitlement that they are owed an outstanding halftime show because of what they have been through. If it's really that bad for you, you can re-watch one of the past ones that you really enjoyed.
I haven't had a chance to watch it yet and will do so later.

Yeah but this was really lackluster given the budget and all. This show felt like an incomplete concept to me. Abel probably would’ve done better with a stripped down show where his personality can come through a bit more.

I actually really enjoyed it. The visuals were stunning and I appreciate the fact that his vocals were live and did great there. I think the lack of choreography was due to the covid limitations as well as the fact that his latest era has had more of a focus on the visuals then choreography as evidenced in his most recent music videos. He has some really memorable songs, not everyone has that!

I enjoyed The Weeknd’s performance it wasn’t as bad as so many people are making it out to be. Abel sounded great and there were some good moments: especially Can’t Feel My Face and Blinding Lights. Knowing his visuals and the amount of extra money spent, I was expecting something more visually spectacular but it was still a decent show.
The Weeknd was definitely better than the messes of JT and Maroon 5 but nowhere near the greatness that was Katy and Gaga. This halftime show reminds me of Bruno’s show: good sound but lacking a visual spectacle. I’d arguably say The Weeknd’s performance was better than Bruno’s.

I'm with most of you on here that thought this was underwhelming. One positive is that I thought his vocals were great. Other than that, I expected a lot more in terms of stage presence and just outright excitement. I honestly never have been one to follow his live performances, but given the creative concept he's done throughout this era, and the reports of him putting in $7M of his own money in addition to the Pepsi budget, I expected to really be blown away. I can't really identify what those extra $7M went to.
The general public has also come to expect "surprise" appearances at the superbowl. Of course, this is not mandatory, but I think that would have definitely elevated the performance -- and clearly there was room to have Daft Punk, Ariana, or literally anyone, since he had that dance routine in the middle and he was constantly going up and down the levels of the stage.

Reading this thread before watching made me expect worse. That handycam thing though, Whyyyyyyyyy, like WHY to interrupt a great flow in the performance like that.

He is definitely a nerd, not the superstar kinda type, so I am happy is so huge right now. We need more humble superstars than Beyonce or Timberlake.

I really enjoyed it actually, he has that charm and the setlist was just perfect. I loved the stage and the overall vibe. Kudos to him and everyone involved.
The energy though wasn't on par with previous shows i agree. Until Blinding Lights it felt like an award show or a Vegas performance. But when BL began and the madness started I had goosebumps.
