First of all congratulations to all of you for making it halfway through the competition! This is when s**t gets real. Remember when we had a foreign language songs round in Season 1? Let's try it again, but this time the theme is specifically to send a Japanese song. And what I meant is songs that sung mostly in Japanese so before anyone asks, no Rina Sawayama please.

A shame YUKIKA's songs won't count since they're in Korean despite her being Japanese. I wanna be tagged for this btw, these are fun

ROUND SEVEN - RESULTS
Welcome to the seventh elimination ceremony! This is a very impressive round. Every and each one of you did a great job. So great even that the average score for this round is more than 8.5! Contributing to that score is also our guest judges for this round, Red and Gotportugal!
Gotportugal sent this before he sent his scores: "Before sending the results, lemme give a shoutout to all, bc all these songs were so pleasant and "harmony-full" loved it!"
Without further ado, the winner of this round is...WALT91!Miki Matsubara - "Mayonaka No Door / Stay With Me"You couldn't be let down with a great song like this, and all the judges enjoy your song! What makes it more impressive is that you got no scores below a 9! Congratulations for your second win of the season!Sambalada: "This song captures all the best part of 80s pop music. From the funky bassline, the catchy and strong use of synthesizers, to the sparkly sound effects. To add to that, Miki's voice is so pleasing to listen to. I'm glad I made this discovery this year." (9.1)Fearless: "A city pop bop. The usage of horns in this song is so plentiful and I love it. It’s so interesting that I discovered this song from Pulse members, it was a minor hit in Japan but it wasn’t a big enough hit to be remembered in the mainstream consciousness (it was a #28 hit in Japan but a #28 in Japan and a #28 in the US is very different). The melody is very catchy too." (9.1)Matt: "Sounds like it would open an 80s or 90s teen movie as we see all the students walking out of the school and s**t and then we're taken on a tour of the town, with the sweet saxophone line playing in the background as we pan out to the title card. f**kin fantastic." (9.4)Violet: -Willapted: "Another one I’ve been enjoying a lot lately. This song emits such a joyful and hopeful feeling to an extent that is difficult to achieve with music, but Miki undeniably pulls it off here." (9.2)Red: "It is not hyperbole to suggest that this 40 year old song was my "song of the summer" this year. Something about this song just makes me feel extremely happy and joyous. At a time like this, we need some joy in our lives." (9.1)Gotportugal: “Ahhh this has it all. Vocals, production, it's SLICK JAPANESE EXCELLENCE, I just want to replay this." (9.9)TOTAL: 55.8 | AVERAGE: 9.3The second best is...WRIP!Sheena Ringo - "本能"So this is your first trip to the top 3 and I hope this is a sign of an upcoming redemption arc! Congratulations!Sambalada: "This song is just wild, guys. Both Sheena's vocal performance and the rocking instrumentations go hard. A banger for the ages." (9.5)Fearless: "Definitely the biggest hit song of the set, peaking at #2 in Japan and selling over a million copies. Sheena Ringo herself is a household name in Japan too and she also heads the band Tokyo Incidents (Tokyo Jihen/東京事変 in Japanese - I submitted a song of theirs in the last Pulsevision game, hope some of you liked it!). The production and vocals are great but I love her lyricism the most, it’s truly unique and it’s showcased to its full potential here." (9.8)Matt: "Really f**king cool and unexpected from this round; this is like a jazz pop /jazz rock type track and the piano line plus vocal performance absolutely kill. Very infectious melodies and i can see this being really replayable for me; going straight into my rotation." (9.3)Violet: -Willapted: "It was in my recent rankdown for a reason, great song. Both the vocal performance and production here is nuts. Love the jazzy, noisy elements which turn an otherwise catchy song into something truly special and memorable." (9.4)Red: "Fascinating song. It basically takes the alt-rock style of the late-90's and turns it into a jazzy banger. It's almost like if Tori Amos lost her mind." (8.1)Gotportugal: “this seems like a timeless song, that you could be hearing at any time in history idk. LOVE the instrumental part, great!" (8.7)TOTAL: 54.8 | AVERAGE: 9.13The third best is...JAMES!Mariya Takeuchi - "Plastic Love"The dark horse of the competition? You've delivered a pretty stable improvement so far. Congratulations you're still in the running!Sambalada: "The tale of how this song become a classic among internet music community never fails to amuse me. I'm glad that happened though because it's a great song and it deserves all the attention. The production in this is immaculate, and the melodical structure is so interesting to follow along." (8.3)Fearless: "This is one of Mariya Takeuchi’s most enduring songs, although it wasn’t a hit at the time. She’s one of the most famous female solo singer in Japan - she’s in her mid-60s, but she scored a #1 album in 2019 and a #1 single earlier this year. Anyways… city pop is a genre I didn’t know about until I discovered Yukika this year but through some artists that my parents listened to the sound was something I was familiar with. Love the production on this and I think the lyrics are something that screams “Japanese” to me, probably the use of particles that signify female in them which not many languages have as far as I know." (9.0)Matt: "Very catchy melodies with some sleek jazzy production and a killer chorus make this an all-around enjoyable pop song. I'm glad someone sent this for this round." (8.9)Violet: -Willapted: "It’s really impossible to put into words how much I love this song. Every single note here is just perfect. Very few songs have the ability to make me feel the way this one does and there is overall no doubt in my mind that it deserves a perfect score from me." (10)Red: "A truly titanic song in the city pop scene, both in length and in production. One of those songs that has, arguably, only gotten better with age." (8.5)Gotportugal: “This is so groovy, so different from the rest! what a feel-good vibe, even tho I have no idea what she's saying but from Plastic Love I guess maybe not so positive.” (9.3)TOTAL:54.0 | AVERAGE: 9.0Next...MOD!Ichiko Aoba - "Porcelain"Sambalada: "This song is almost ethereally beautiful. Her voice is pretty, the instrumentations are pretty, the melody is pretty. Also, I didn't know this just came out this year? I've definitely heard it earlier. #MandelaEffect" (9.0)Fearless: "The instrumentals and the almost haunting vocals are this one’s strength for me; the chimes, the flutes (I think it sounds like a traditional Japanese flute) in particular. Also this sounds like it could appear in a Ghibli movie. It’s a little too “uneventful” as a song for my liking but otherwise it’s great." (8.5)Matt: "Do not love the vocals but the backing guitar line is very relaxing and makes for a solid if unremarkable tune. Don't have a ton to say here." (6.3)Violet: -Willapted: "One of the best singles of 2020 to me. Porcelain is an absolutely gorgeous track. Ichiko’s vocals are stunning and the glittery instrumental could only be described as brilliant." (9.5)Red: "This might be the most beautiful song I've heard in a long time. I don't know when I will listen to the album this song is on, but, after this, I know that I will be listening to it, for sure." (8.5)Gotportugal: “This is so classy, so simple, so effective." (9.0)TOTAL: 50.8 | AVERAGE: 8.47Next...
HAMED!Kyary Pamyu Pamyu - "にんじゃりばんばん"Sambalada: "This is a pure fun pop song. The overly sugar-y vibe of the song doesn't bother me. The production is just so fun that I want to bounce around to the music the entire four and a half minutes." (8.7)Fearless: "This one is definitely one of the most mainstream songs on here. Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is hit or miss for me, but this person has managed to pick my favorite from her. The chorus is so damn catchy - the verses aren’t as strong but an overwhelming majority of the song is the chorus so… The mix of electronic production and traditional Japanese instruments (plus that sword sound effect) is pretty cool." (9.2)Matt: "I've heard s**t like this in anime openings and the like and this is a banger no lie. Catchy melodies and fun production." (7.9)Violet: -Willapted: "There’s certainly elements here I like. The chorus for one is very strong and certain parts of the instrumental work well. The overall sound though is very sugary and overproduced to the point where it becomes slightly irritating lol." (7.6)Red: "The production and chorus absolutely carry this song to another level. It would be a standard, if not thoroughly enjoyable J-Pop song otherwise." (7.7)Gotportugal: “A cute change of pace, again great production, the production really carrying amazingly most of these songs." (9.4)TOTAL: 50.5 | AVERAGE: 8.42Next...ZEDD!Fishmans - "ナイトクルージング"
Sambalada: "My knowledge on fishmans is limited but this song, I've always known and loved. The atmosphere they're creating is beautiful. My favorite among the songs I've heard from them and (so far) the only fishmans song I have in my library." (8.3) (8.0)Fearless: "The instrumentals are good and creates a cool but chill atmosphere that totally fits the title of the song but I’m not the biggest fan of the vocals.” (8.6) (8.3)Matt: "Very relaxing instrumental that I can put on anytime and mentally drift away to. Especially love the piano line and this overall perfectly depicts the title "night cruising" with its sound. Good s**t." (8.6) (8.3)Violet: -Willapted: "Truth be told, the majority of my favourite Fishmans songs come off of the popular live album ’98.12.28’. Despite that, Night Cruising is certainly one of the stronger cuts from their single discography. The instrumental here is the main highlight for me, really pulls at the heartstrings and gets more emotive as the song goes on." (9.2) (8.9)Red: "Fishmans are an act that are truly before their time. There are so many bands and artists today that are shooting for Fishmans' aesthetic, and they just nailed it." (8.2) (7.9)Gotportugal: “So I heard all of the songs two days ago, but yesterday night I was driving and I decided to relisten to see which songs were IT for me. Night cruising indeed, it flows really well throughout it all and I'm usually not a sucker for mostly instrumental songs, but this never had me looking at the timer. Great pick." (8.6) (8.3)TOTAL: 51.5 49.7 | AVERAGE: 8.58 8.28The last person to escape the bottom two is...NICK PERKINS!Pizzicato Five - "スウィート・ソウル・レヴュー"Sambalada: "This a bop. The bassline is just sooooooo groovy lol. The melody is also well written, and the vocalist delivered it in such a charming way. This sounds like a good trip." (8.4)Fearless: "I like the way the song sounds really happy and the bassline here is really good too. It matches the lyrics very well as it’s about the sweet and happy side of love. The usage of words like “happy” and “lucky” in its English form (although the pronunciation and spelling is Japanese-ified) rather than its Japanese translation also brings about a playful nuance to the song." (8.5)Matt: "Groovy. you guys brought the quality this round jammincat." (8.4)Violet: -Willapted: "This is fun, enjoyable production and vocals combine to create a very good pop track. It unfortunately doesn’t stick out to me quite as much as some of the other songs here, as this is a very stacked group." (7.9)Red: "This song sounds VERY 90's pop soul. There's no denying that it does its job very well, though. It's just a really nice little song." (7.3)Gotportugal: “very classic sounding, I see myself dancing to this in the 80s honestly" (8.3)TOTAL: 48.8 | AVERAGE: 8.13
You've had multiple top 3 finishes, and they were even consecutive, so I know you have what it takes for this competition. Let's hope this is not a start of a downfall Which means the bottom two are... BB & MAYMAN
Both of you sent good songs, but in such a stacked round, just 'good' doesn't cut it. And you should expect an even tighter competition in the future.
One of you will be eliminated.

The last person to advance to the next round is...MAYMAN!ROUND TABLE Featuring Nino - "あたしだって同じこと思ってるよ"Sambalada: "Love the chill R&B vibes. The melody is taken straight out from the textbook definition of 'romantic' despite me not knowing what she's saying. Her lovely voice is fascinating as well as soothing. A really nice first listen for me, thank you." (8.0)Fearless: "The chill production is really nice. The way the lead singer enunciates the words isn’t my favorite but that’s kind of about it for the song. The lyrics are simple but really sweet and combined with the chill but cute production, it gets across the message well." (8.3)Matt: "Smooth r&b tune with a very nice vocal performance. Also i like how the artist name is actually "round table featuring nino" lol." (7.7)Violet: -Willapted: "This was one artist here who I was completely unfamiliar with, and I have to say out of all the first listen songs this one impressed me the most. It features a very enjoyable, laid-back instrumental and a nice vocal performance. Overall a nice change of pace from the more bright, poppy songs sent in this group." (8.5)Red: "I thought this song sounded pretty late 90's-early 2000's, only to discover that this song was released in 2008. You could have fooled me. Regardless of its release date, it's a very soothing, relaxing song." (7.0)Gotportugal: "this is very ~vibes~, another great choice, love the final chorus." (8.0) TOTAL: 47.5 | AVERAGE: 7.92
By the skin of your teeth, girl! Seven rounds in, and you spent three of them in the top two, and another three in the bottom two. We need to see more consistency. You are also super lucky this time as you only beat BB by a sheer .2 points. Congratulations you're still in the running!Which means...
BB, I'm sorry but you've been eliminated.
Fishmans - "IN THE FLIGHT"
Sambalada: "I like the live version better actually but yeah, this is nice. Very breezy and cool." (7.6) Fearless: "Both Fishmans songs have great instrumentals and production, but the vocals are not to my liking and it stands out here more than the other song in this set. I preferred “ナイトクルージング” myself but this one is pretty good too." (7.7) Matt: "Nice and smooth but yeah this can't measure up to the live version like my fellow judges mentioned. A simpler instrumental but still well put together and overall a good tune." (7.5) Violet: - Willapted: "This is one where I find the live version far superior. That version is just far richer and more engaging than this. However, I cannot deny this standard version is still a great song. Like Night Cruising, I find the instrumental to be a standout here – simplistic but still has enough going for it that helps create a sweet, laidback atmosphere." (8.0) Red: "This song, for lack of a better analogy, makes me feel like I'm flying." (8.4) Gotportugal: "Another Fishmans entry, another solid one. Love the beginning, fades a bit in the middle for me. But a solid entry nonetheless." (8.1) TOTAL: 47.3 | AVERAGE: 7.88
Who would've thought sending fishmans for a Japanese songs round would get someone eliminated? It's just a matter of everyone else sending a better song and that's the name of the game. I'm sorry your run must end here. Thank you for participating. :'(
