ROUND SIX - OBSCURITY POINTSFeatured Song: Natalie Imbruglia - "Smoke"
Tired of seeing obvious picks and big hits every single round? This round we're gonna try and force to get out of your comfort zone. Send a song that never appeared on any forum game. And I mean, any forum game, and that includes artist/album RDs, personal rankdowns, year end rankdowns, any other rankdowns, tournaments, Top 10s, Top 40s, danger zones, etc etc. It's also irrelevant if the game has finished, currently in process, or cancelled. If it has a thread on Pulse, it's ineligible.
There's another twist. This time, when you send your submission, I'm not gonna tell you if the songs you sent fit the theme or not. BUT if me or any other judges find out that your song has been used in a game before, you're gonna get 0.3 points taken off from each score each judges give you. And this penalty will apply for the next three rounds. So be careful.
As a reminder, you cannot use any songs in the Hall of Fame below;
Alice Deejay - "Better Off Alone" Amy Winehouse - "Back To Black" Ariana Grande & The Weeknd - "Love Me Harder" Big Star - "Thirteen" BROCKHAMPTON - "BOOGIE" Charli XCX & Christine & The Queens - "Gone" Coldplay - "Don't Panic" Daft Punk - "Something About Us" Dua Lipa - "Don't Start Now" Earth, Wind, & Fire - "September" Foo Fighters - "Everlong" Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit - "If We Were Vampires" Johnny Cash - "Hurt" Kanye West - "Through The Wire" Kanye West feat. Pusha T - "Runaway" Kendrick Lamar - "The Art Of Peer Pressure" Lana Del Rey - "Venice Bitch" Lauryn Hill - "Doo Wop (That Thing)" Lauryn Hill - "Ex-Factor" Lorde - "Ribs" Marvin Gaye - "What's Going On" Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell - "Ain't No Mountain Enough" Michael Jackson - "Billie Jean" OutKast - "Rosa Parks" Patsy Cline - "Crazy" Playboi Carti feat. Lil Uzi Vert - "Shoota" Public Enemy - "Fight The Power" Sigur Rós - "Hoppípolla" Taylor Swift - "Enchanted" The Cure - "Lovesong" The Flamingos - "I Only Have Eyes For You" The Ronettes - "Sleigh Ride" The Smiths - "How Soon Is Now?" The Supremes - "You Keep Me Hangin' On" Ultravox - "Vienna" Due Date: December 14th 4PM EST

I'm pleased with the results in the previous round. Not happy about indulge leaving but at least there was a clear gap between his song and the one above it so it's a fair elimination! This round will be BRUTAL. Samba came back ready to clear a bitch

UPDATE #1
I already found a song that doesn't fit the theme. Sorry to the person who sent Perfume Genius - "Slip Away", you're getting a 0.3 points penalty for the next three rounds. 🙏🙏🙏
Everyone else is also free to point out if there's a song in this list that has appeared in a game before!

Is there a Spotify playlist? Even if I was expecting more "obscure" artists, I'd like to give them a spin.

ROUND SIX - RESULTS
Welcome to the sixth elimination ceremony! I don't know if I should be surprised only one of you ended with the penalty anyway, so good job on that. Unfortunately one of you has to leave this competition tonight. And to help us decide who stays and who goes, I've invited dremolus - solarpunk and lyhom to be the guest judges for this round.
On the other end, one person comfortably secured the top spot with their outstanding performance. That person is...MOD!Clarence Clarity - "Those Who Can't, Cheat"The Imagine Dragons fan is on a roll. Congrats for your second win in a row! Don't slip!Sambalada: "I'm not sure where have I heard it before. The production is a killer but it took a while for me to get on board with the melody and vocal effects. It's such an interesting song though so I can see this growing even more on me." (7.8)Fearless: "The song begins with a bang and the production immediately pulled me in. The bass is sick and some of the Eastern music influences (the flutes) are pretty cool too." (8.9)Matt: "Very unique production on this one and when paired with a consistent bassline and constant switchups in tone and style throughout the track, you get one of the most unique songs of the past decade." (9.1)Violet: "ps1 startup sound type beat." (9.4)Willapted: "Surprised this hasn’t been used before, but anyway it’s an absolute banger. Like my god this production goes so hard. Vocals slap too. Great pick." (9.2)Dremolus: "The intro of this track always gets me and I love the demented yet groovy energy of this track, one of the few cases I can say no one else does this style, it's just amazing." (9.0)Lyhom: “I remember some artist named "clairity" or something like that who kurt made some threads for when I was new and seeing clarence clarity's name pop up reminded me of her even though I've never listened to her music and I doubt they have anything to do with each other lol. in actually related news, good song." (8.4)TOTAL: 61.8 | AVERAGE: 8.83The second best is...WALT91!MARINA - "Hypocrates"You've been serving nothing but consistency so far. Keep it up!Sambalada: "This album is one of my favourites of the decade and while this song isn't one of the biggest standout, it's still damn great. Marina brings her personality to the sunny pop rock style and she owns it." (8.2)Fearless: "The wordplay of “Hypocrates” and “hypocrites” is pretty brilliant and the hook is really catchy. The production is pretty nice too." (8.3)Matt: "Giving me some pop rock vibes and i dig it, her vocal tone also sounds great here and she really sells this song as a whole." (8.3)Violet: "So this was my s**t in the beginning of my junior year of high school. i was inching my way out of a really toxic group of people and the whole album was something that helped me so much to get through those hard times. this song being one of my favorites. i don’t want to get very personal here but this song is insanely significant to me and is one of the few electra heart songs that i can still listen to nowadays." (10)Willapted: "I’m not the biggest fan of Marina, never checked her music out in depth but I do like what I’ve heard. This is cool, strong hook and nice rocky production I can get behind." (8.3)Dremolus: "Really great summery pop rock song, I miss this side of MARINA." (8.0)Lyhom: “The singles are the only songs from electra heart I'm really familiar with, this was a nice introduction to the album tracks. pretty nice and breezy, not sure how often I'd return to it though." (7.3)TOTAL: 58.4 | AVERAGE: 8.34The third best is...BB!Sweet Trip - "Chocolate Matter"You've had some standout moments but your performance has been mostly middling. But still, this is a great round for you. Congratulations!Sambalada: "A first listen here and it's really great. The instrumentations are nothing short of awesome. There are so many things happening at once but somehow they make it all sound pumping and fun. Love the gamelan-esque outro too." (8.7)Fearless: "Not a fan of the vocals buried in the instrumental production style but other than that bit, it’s a solid (mostly) instrumental track." (7.9)Matt: "I dig these kinda shoegazy guitars and the synth playing in the background is cool too. nice song." (7.2)Violet: "I really like sweet trip. you will never know why is one of my favorite albums ever and even though i never finished listening to vdc, this song is also really solid." (8.8)Willapted: "Sweet Trip are f**king sick." (9.4) Dremolus: "Interesting combinations of dream pop and electronic fuzz, something really hypnotic by the vocal melodies but in a good way. this was a good find." (7.0)Lyhom: “Sweet trip are a band who I should probably actively check more than the "listen to the two or so songs by them that have shown up in my discover weekly over the years" that I've done so far, and this song definitely helps me in wanting to check more of them out.” (8.3)TOTAL:57.3 | AVERAGE: 8.19Next...ZEDD!Perfume Genius - "Slip Away"Sambalada: "As much of a flop this submission is, on its own, I love this song to bits. I used it in a rankdown (lmao) for a reason. I think this song made me realize how much I love perfume genius' music. This song is magical. The lyrics, the sophisticated and bright sparkly production, the buildup, and all to Hadreas's reassuring vocal performance. All the reasons why I love Mike Hadreas, you can find in this song." (9.3) (9.0)Fearless: "I didn’t get into Perfume Genius until “Describe”/”On the Floor” so his previous music is all new to me. I like the “big” sounding instrumentals, it really helps build up the song’s energy. The percussion is my favorite element of the song." (8.6) (8.3)Matt: "Solid, punching beat elevates it a lot but the vocals drag it down quite a bit for me; still solid though." (6.7) (6.4)Violet: "catharsis at its finest." (8.5) (8.2)Willapted: "PG isn’t one of my favourite artists, but I’ve always enjoyed and respected his music. This is quite a strong selection & one of his better tracks, although I don’t quite love it as much as others." (8.1) (7.8)Dremolus: "The track starts slow but when that guitar hits, damn is it powerful and Mike Hadreas rivals Frank Ocean in terms of capturing intimacy. Also unrelated but the music video is absolutely beautiful." (7.5) (7.2)Lyhom: “I've never really loved a song by perfume genius that I've heard from pulse games but I'm always happy to check out more from him, as they've always been solid (this included)" (7.9) (7.6)TOTAL: 56.6 54.5 | AVERAGE: 8.09 7.79Next...
JAMES!Rolling Blackout Coastal Fever - "Falling Thunder"Sambalada: "I dig the production in this. The song is also pretty catchy but, maybe because this is a first listen for me, it's not really memorable. There are songs in this set that caught my full attention on first listen more than this." (7.1)Fearless: "I only heard about RBCF thanks to James’s spamming and “Cars in Space” and “French Press” are both jams. RBCF songs I’ve heard has great instrumentals and this one is no different. The melody leaves a bit to be desired for my taste but the instrumentals are still great to listen to and makes the whole song a nice listen as well." (8.4)Matt: "Really uplifting melodies and well produced with some slick guitar lines, i like this almost as much as Cars In Space." (8.6)Violet: "Cool song but nothing more than background noise." (6.7)Willapted: "Not quite Cars in Space but still a very enjoyable single from these guys." (8.4)Dremolus: "About the only Rolling Blackouts song I can tolerate and even then, they really feel like very commercialized, personality-less jangle pop. Alvvays, these guys are not." (5.0)Lyhom: “rolling blackouts as a band in general have been one of my favourite discoveries of the year, every song I've heard by them is so good." (9.4)TOTAL: 53.6.| AVERAGE: 7.66Next...NICK PERKINS!YUKIKA - "Love In TV World"
Sambalada: "This is a cute bop. Maybe it doesn't have a punch that's as strong as her other songs I heard but I still dig the groovy production here." (7.6)Fearless: "Not my favorite YUKIKA song but it’s YUKIKA so I still stan. Apparently her exclusive management contract ended in November so I’m not sure what that holds for her, but I hope wherever she ends up she keeps making music because her brand of city pop is great. It’s a bit more low-key than my favorites from her, but I love that too. I love you whoever sent this!” (9.1)Matt: "Some great city pop production and a kickass vocal performance; just an all around great track." (8.2)Violet: "Yukika is yet another artist i wish i liked more. i know the rest of the judges are probably sucking this song’s toes or something (idk i haven’t read any of their reviews yet) but yeah. none of the yukika songs in the madness games have done anything for me at all. they’re decent efforts but fall into the same traps as a lot of the modern disco revival tracks except for city pop. this song just reminds me of better songs i should listen to instead… like cherry by rina sawayama." (4.7)Willapted: "There’s certain K-Pop artists that I can’t help but love. Yukika is certainly one of them. The city pop-esque production and vocal delivery in her music is pure ear-candy for me & this one has a guitar bit as well! Banger." (8.8)Dremolus: "It's a decent song but I see why this was a bonus loose cut and not on her album. that guitar solo kicks ass tho." (6.5)Lyhom: “I need to check out more yukika (and this city pop sound in general), I've liked everything I've heard from her." (8.0)TOTAL: 52.9 | AVERAGE: 7.56Next...HAMED!Sky Ferreira - "Nobody Asked Me (If I Was Okay)"Sambalada: "I haven't listened to this album in full for a long time and maybe I should revisit it because every tracks I've heard on several occasions are all at least an 8 for me. Skyfe sounds great in this song and the production is hot." (8.2)Fearless: "Idk I really like the “I tried to ask you but nobody asked me” - to me this just feels like a representation of asking someone if someone is ok because you’re not and you want/need someone to listen to how you’re feeling and I can relate so much to that. The rock-ish production fit well too." (8.8)Matt: "Slapper of a beat but melodically, this doesn't really go anywhere and the lyrics are highkey cringe lmao." (5.8)Violet: "Idk why but this really isn’t doing much to me. this being repetitive also doesn’t really help." (6.3)Willapted: "This album is absolute heat & this is definitely one of the standouts on it for me. Catchy vocals and fire production." (9.0)Dremolus: "SKY! PLEASE COME BACK, WE NEED YOU " (7.0)Lyhom: “Didn't clear the (admittively very high) bar that the previous sky ferreira songs I've heard set, but this was still real good." (7.6)TOTAL: 52.7 | AVERAGE: 7.53The last person to escape the bottom two is...WRIP!Kylie Minogue - "Miss A Thing"Sambalada: "Most of Kylie's new album is decent. This is a bit better than decent though. The hook could be a lot stronger still but it is damn groovy." (7.5)Fearless: "Disco as an entire album was solid and full of bops and this one is no exception. I probably need to relisten to Disco to see where this would land, but as far as I can remember this was in my top half from that album." (8.0)Matt: "Nice pulse and some cool production elements make this solid, but nothing really groundbreaking about this otherwise." (6.5)Violet: "The disco revival of 2020 is something i’ve been a very vocal critic of. outside of a few tracks, they all sound practically the same and this isn’t an exception to that. doesn’t help that the chorus reminds me of that god awful aerosmith song. (4.7)Willapted: "This sound is getting a bit overdone by this point, but I still dig most of what’s going on here." (7.5)Dremolus: "Honestly, one of the less memorable/more filler-ish cuts on DISCO." (5.5)Lyhom: “I really shouldn't have put off listening to kylie's new music this year until now, huh?" (9.0)TOTAL: 48.7 | AVERAGE: 6.96
Your performance overall has been decent, but perhaps maybe also a little bit too safe? Anyways, you're still in for another round. Congratulations! Which means the bottom two are... MAYMAN & SLAYER
Mayman, I have started to worry about your chance in this competition. You've done a pretty great job but once in a while, you submitted songs that would drag you all the way to the bottom. Slayer, you've also done a pretty good job so far but overall, you have been what I would call a floater.
One of you will be eliminated.

The last person to advance to the next round is...MAYMAN!Bryson Tiller - "Things Change"Sambalada: "This is pretty cool but also kind of a bore. The last one minute is the best part because of how bloom-y the production at that part is." (7.2)Fearless: "Maybe I’m just not that big of a fan of Bryson Tiller’s style like I kind of alluded to in the last round when “Exchange” was submitted. This one bothered me less though and was kind of nice and vibey actually, but it’s also nothing I would really come back to." (6.8)Matt: "This was a highlight for me from Bryson's latest album; super smooth vocals like always and a cool sample that mixes well with the beat and a great flow after the beat switch too." (8.4)Violet: "So for some reason i actually really like the sound of this. the production is amazing and tiller sounds incredible here. bonus points for the beat switch too. that was dope and really well executed." (8.0)Willapted: "This is decent, idk what to say about it really. If it was in a year end rankdown I’d rank it decently high but here it doesn’t stick out much." (6.6)Dremolus: "zzzzzzzz. abt the only noteworthy thing is his flow on the rap verse." (4.0)Lyhom: "I was completely unaware that bryson had new music out until like, a week ago lol. I haven't really checked anything from him out since "let me explain" but this was pretty good." (7.6)TOTAL: 48.6 | AVERAGE: 6.94 You actually only got in the bottom two barely by being beaten by Wrip for .1 point. However, it still concerns me how in the last five rounds you either landed in the top two or the bottom two. Anyways, you're still in the running! Which means...
SLAYER, I'm sorry but you've been eliminated.
The Lone Ghosts - "Creeper Kicks"
Sambalada: "The title was about to give me Spongebob's mother and kids meme vibe but this actually sound good. I think the vocal was really meant to sound like this in its indie lo-fi vibe, but the way it drowns the instrumentation is too obvious for me now. That being said, the music is great and the songwriting is also good, so the problem is basically just the demo quality." (7.0) Fearless: "The guitars are nice in this one, but the vocals aren’t necessarily in my alley and the song feels a little dead in terms of energy. A fine song, but to me it’s not much more than that." (7.0) Matt: "Nice guitars and I actually liked the amateur feel of the track; i really dug the chorus melody as well." (7.3) Violet: "So this is a risky pick. the band doesn’t have a rym page and this song only has 13k streams on spotify. and i’ll be honest. i wish i liked this more. it sounds very amateur which isn’t a bad thing but it doesn’t help things and i don’t really like the vocals much. the instrumentation is fine but this song really isn’t mixed well." (5.0) Willapted: "This was the one song here that I really didn’t know anything about. I’m not loving the vocals here but the instrumental is nice enough and I applaud you for sending something this unknown lol." (6.9) Dremolus: "I wanna be as nice as possible given how lofi and independent this artist is but this feels like a demo and not a particularly interesting one." (4.5) Lyhom: "The only artist who I had never heard of before this, this was a good introduction but even though I imagine it was the point I think this would've worked for me more if it was more polished than the "mixed in my bedroom" vibe I got" (7.0) TOTAL: 44.7 | AVERAGE: 6.39
You've done very well in this competition. Being a part of the top ten in this season is not an easy feat! It's just unfortunate that this round was the end of the road for you. Thank you for participating. :'(
