This song's pretty interesting. It's also pretty annoying and with that in mind there wasn't much space for me to put it anywhere but my bottom 5 here 89

Jesus finally
"Shout" sounded so tremendously terrible that I had to double-check the playlist to make sure a bootleg MIDI karaoke cover wasn't accidentally placed there. I'm truly confused on what positives one could find in this song, unless your favorite TV shows of all-time consist of the entire 80s Hanna-Barbera lineup

So far I haven't lost anything important and was actually pretty on spot with my #100 and a few other tank residents. I know why you guys tanked this? It sounds way too much like Wham!. I liked it tho. I won't be tanking any synthpop.

100. If It Happens Again - UB40This Caribbean wonderjam gets tanked right at the starting gate. Can't say I'm surprised. It had melody. I'll give it that, but not much more. 99. Bad Life - Public Image LtdThis has got to be a record. Me guessing one of the bottom two while getting rid of my #100 song. This guy is pissed about something ,and it reflects in this awful song. I'd like to thank everyone else who thought the same enough to tank this travesty. Our work here is done 98. Nervous and Shakey - The Del Fuegos This was pretty awful, but also kinda sounded like something you could hear at the Titty Twizter, so I gave it a point or two extra for that. 97. True Men Don't Kill Coyotes - Red Hot Chili PeppersGreat. I was afraid I might be the only big fan of this band who thought this was awful? Glad to see some of RHCP's biggest fans tank this amateurish sounding travesty. I also would like to point out why did College radio think this song was more worthy of this top 100 list than say all those other Cars' songs? 96. I Love You, Suzanne - Lou Reed Probably one of the best songs I've heard from this guy. kinda dug the slight rock a billy vibe this song had. Almost like something off a Ric Ocasek solo album. 95. Nelson Mandela - The Special AKA Awesome. Another full on travesty out the window. I hope I never encounter another intro this bad in 80's music again. 94. General Public - General PublicThis isn't one of their best , but I just really love Dave's vocals in any song. Remember that "She's Having A Baby" song. It was all about Dave Wakeling vocals for me. 93. Free Yourself - The UntouchablesThis had some semi fun moments with some James Brown soul elements, but the more I came back to it the more it sillified me. 92. The Only Flame in Town - Elvis Costello & The Attractionsthis wasn't that bad, but really nothing memorable either. I think I upgraded it for Daryl Hall's cameo appearance alone. 91. Will the Wolf Survive? - Los LobosGlad to see this one couldn't survive. My advise to this band. Stick to Ritchie Valens cover songs. 90. Locomotion - Orchestral Manoeuvres in the DarkThis had it's charm for that bassline alone, but even I couldn't squeeze this particular OMD song in my top half. 89. All You Pretty Girls - XTCI didn't really care for any of the XTC songs gracing this RD. This song was seriously borderline Wizard of Oz silliness. 88. Shout - DevoI didn't think this was half as bad as most of you think. I loved the Medieval horns in the intro, and it was melodic fire. Vocals were good. In the end if they were trying for a Italo Disco vibe they failed, but it was still a sort of guilty pleasure. Thought I would tackle a few more extras:Black Flag - My War Punk Rock has its charm. Sometimes I'm in the mood for it and sometimes I'm not. I like that this sounds like a demo, but I didn't find the song particularly fetching. Captain Sensible - One Christmas Catalogue"he said Captain I said Wot" is all I recall from this act. ![](http://yoursmiles.org/ssmile/fun/s0244.gif) Truthfully I kinda dug this because it's made up of the 80's sounds I like. I really find his accent attractive to the ear. Love the female backups that sound like Human League girls, and it's melodic. Debbie Harry - Rush RushThis really sounds like The Human League production... sure enough it's Giorgio Moroder. Anyway I love this song, and you should know why. It's from Scarface. Also "Yeyo" is Pacino for Cocaine. Giorgio Moroder with Philip Oakey - Together in Electric DreamsMore Moroder and Oakey magic. Such an aesthetic heavenly sound aura revolves around this song. Philip Oakey could very well be my favorite singer from the New Wave era. Him and Simon Le Bon. His tones are just perfect. A natural baritone like tone that contrasted beautifully with the playful poppy sound of the synths. The Master Moroder took any song into Italo Disco territory. This would have been super high on my list. Joe Jackson - Be My Number Two More like my #92. Jeez this was boring. The more I preview Joe Jackson songs the more I realize I only like "Steppin' Out" and "Is She Really Going Out with Him?". Leonard Cohen - Dance Me to the End of Love This song is a hard pass for me. It probably has some sort of artistic value among music critics. I just don't know what to make of it so I'll just let it be. Midnight Oil - When the Generals Talk Holy shit Midnight Oil with New Wave production sounds. Actually this wasn't so bad because of the New wave vibes. Would have been interesting to see how it would have fared on this list of songs. Ministry - The Nature of LoveAlready wanting to get experimental. I hear the "Relax" bassline. some Depeche Mode , The Human League ,and New Order synth inserts. Pretty cool actually ,and in Extended format. Thank you for that. Strawberry Switchblade - Since YesterdayThis was F U C King awesome. They were like Gothpop, but this is such a pretty song. Loved the vocals. Like Bananrama tones. That ultra aesthetic melody kept me enticed til the end. Could have been one of those songs I stuck in my top 20 just because it would be expected of me to upgrade aesthetic fire like this. The Boomtown Rats - Drag Me DownThis band had their own brand of British Heartland going on in their music. I like this one, very upbeat and fantastic vocals to keep the song high on emotion. Tracie - Dr. LovePretty nice. The melody hit some walls here and there, but I also got some slight Duran Duran groove vibes. The female vocals were great. Vicious Pink - Cccan't You See...Sounds like something that I would like for that music alone. A lot of Italo NRG all over this song.

Urgh I'm real bad at commenting on the songs as they're being revealed, I tried in earnest this time and fell off immediately. So I'm just gonna do the big post as I usually do for rankdowns if I actually have a lot I want to comment on.
100: If It Happens Again - UB40: UB40's legacy as one of the lamest bands in the history of popular music is...fitting.
99: Bad Life - Public Image Ltd.: Like, almost every PIL song is going to be annoying in some way, but every now and again the annoyingness comes back around to catchiness and I come out of it...almost liking it? That was kind of the case here, I know it ranked it at 97, but it's still...5/10
98: Nervous and Shakey - The Del Fuegos: Yeah I already commented on this one. Just very bland, vocals are not good.
97: True Men Don't Kill Coyotes - Red Hot Chili Peppers: This was a fun addition to this list. With all the 80s classic and general synthpop here, it's kind of fun to see, oh yeah RHCP were around in 1984 huh. I mean, I don't like the song, but I can count on one hand the number of RHCP songs I actually like
96: I Love You, Suzanne - Lou Reed: Uhh this was definitely a Lou Reed song from the 80s? Don't have much to say here, it's fine.
95: Nelson Mandela - The Specials: I do have respect for The Specials being one of the founding fathers of ska punk, don't really like this song all that much though.
94: General Public - General Public: General Public
93: Free Yourself - The Untouchables: Uhh this is just kind of annoying. No strong opinion.
92: The Only Flame in Town - Elvis Costello: This is...very lame
91: Will the Wolf Survive? - Los Lobos: Whaaaaaat why is this bottom 10? This was a very good first listen, most I've ever liked a Los Lobos song. Kinda surprised I'm the highest ranker by a large margin.
90: Locomotion - OMD: Yeah the OMD singles on this list really aren't that good. Think I liked this one a bit more than Tesla Girls though
89: All You Pretty Girls - XTC: This is far from being one of XTC's best, but I do have to admit it kept growing on me each time I came back to it. What an odd song, the rhythm of the chorus is so weird, it's actually really earworm-y. Has potential to be annoying, but the quirkiness does actually work for me here.
88: Shout - Devo: Don't feel too much about this one, it's kinda just there, almost catchy, prefer anything Mothersbaugh did for Rugrats probably
87: Sunset Now - Heaven 17: I know this probably sounds misguided coming right after the Devo song, but god the synth line on this song is so annoying. Everything about this song is annoying, just way too bubbly. Shrimp Heaven Now is 10/10 though
86: Go! - Tones on Tail: I'm not surprised this one placed so low (in fact I wouldn't have been surprised if it were bottom 10), but this was such a cool first listen. It sounds kinda ahead of its time. Loooove that bass riff and the "ya ya ya" refrain has like...an aggressive soundcloud rap quality to it? Or am I crazy? I really dig this one, have come back to it a lot.

100. If It Happens Again - UB40 Last year's #100 was a bit underwhelming, but the bottom two here made up for it. This sounded almost decent for the first 15 seconds or so, until you realize that it's UB40 and that bit of music will playing on a loop for the rest of the runtime. 99. Bad Life - Public Image Ltd This is easily the single worst vocal performance I've heard in any rankdown. John Lydon and the brass section seem to be in a battle over who can squawk more obnoxiously. 98. Nervous and Shakey - The Del Fuegos While the songwriting is pretty simple, I thought this was a decent rocker that added a bit of variety to this year's batch. Others very clearly disagreed. 97. True Men Don't Kill Coyotes - Red Hot Chili Peppers Doc Indie Party Rock's description of this as "amateurish" pretty much nails this one - they sound like a garage band trying to impersonate the Red Hot Chili Peppers - but for me, there's something kind of endearing about how primitive this is. 96. I Love You, Suzanne - Lou Reed As I stated earlier, I would have stood up a bit for Endlessly Jealous or My Red Joystick (as silly as the latter is), but I'm going to sit for this one. The music is pretty repetitive and the lyrics, usually a highlight of Lou Reed tracks, are about as average a love song as you can get. 95. Nelson Mandela - The Special AKA A fun, upbeat ska track with some solid hooks in my opinion. 94. General Public - General Public I kind of like that little rapid acceleration gimmick they do a few times here, but the overall songwriting and structuring here are pretty sloppy. 93. Free Yourself - The Untouchables A little energetic but pretty generic. 92. The Only Flame in Town - Elvis Costello & The Attractions
Elvis Costello was one of several old guard modern rock artists who were running out of steam at this point. I like early new wave Elvis Costello, but his genre experimentation from Almost Blue onward could be hit-or-miss, and this odd attempt at bringing crooning to '80s pop certainly didn't hit.
91. Will the Wolf Survive? - Los Lobos
Simple, old-fashioned rock music in the Tex-Mex style. I found it to be enjoyable but not exactly exceptional.
90. Locomotion - Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark
This was an odd year for OMD. It's not a bad synth-pop tune, but where's the flawless production and excellent atmosphere that the band usually delivers? This is merely competent.
89. All You Pretty Girls - XTC
I disliked this song on first impression and found the sea chantey melody very corny (although admittedly rather creative.) Something about it grew on me though - maybe the sing-a-long style chorus - and I found myself liking it increasingly more as I was ranking. There are definitely some XTC tracks that I prefer to this though.
88. Shout - Devo
Here we have the title track to the album that basically killed Devo's career. They went all out for a futuristic angle with cutting edge synths here, yet created something that feels tacky and dated even by the standards of its era. If you can somehow get past how cheap this sounds, your only real reward is some average Devo songwriting.
87. Sunset Now - Heaven 17
Another listenable, if dated, synth driven track that doesn't stand out a lot. I do rather like the chorus for some reason though.
86. Go! - Tones on Tail
I liked the dark sound and chunky instrumental tones here, but they should have taken a cue from The Rolling Stones and gotten the ya-yas out. Some may find them a creative touch - I probably would have if they didn't happen so often - but I found they got increasingly annoying as the track went on.

Another winner of a performance 100
If It Happens Again UB40
Past Artist History#98 Alt 1986 (Sing Our Own Song) | #99 Alt 1985 (I Got You Babe) | #99 Alt 1988 (Breakfast in Bed) | #99 Alt 1990 (Here I Am (Come and Take Me)) | #99 Alt 1993 (One in Ten) | #100 Alt 1993 (Can't Help Falling in Love)
Okay, I'm seriously consider doing a poll of the most universal Pulse truths: 1. Hates UB40 2. Loves Taylor Swift 3. Loves Reba 4. Loves Sara Evans 5. Hates Nickleback (though that is probably more than just a Pulse thing) Am I missing an obvious truth here??? Other than Lou Reed getting the shaft for probably one of his better songs, the bottom 15 seems very appropriate.

We've seen this British reggae band quite a few times as an extra, but I'm not sure if we'll ever actually rank them. Steppin' Out Steel Pulse
