It figures you would make a Weeknd comparison, but it's not bad as far as comparisons go--you have 2 #1 hits, one #3 hit, and one late-album cycle single with a lower peak that fights for a YE spot.

I guess Deja Vu will be BUWYGIB? Yep, given that both were Top 3 hits that didn't had the same #1 fortune compared to the other 2 singles, the difference is while "BUWYGIB" had a higher peak, "deja vu" will have a higher YE position

I guess Deja Vu will be BUWYGIB? Not necessarily. BUWYGIB didn't have stability and was a big debut but meh run. It was more akin to Nonstop.

So now we're going with a Scorpion theme for the Sour hits? I mean, comparables are comparables I suppose.

I meant BUWYGIB is more to Nonstop than to deja vu

I agree with that, and I tend to like both of those songs about the same.

Step 1: How I think the YTD year-end chart currently looks for the chart week ending Aug 14, 2021: This is almost certainly the last week on the chart for Mood, so if Blinding Lights can remain fairly stable for the next three weeks it can actually overtake Mood as the #2 song of the year. I think that's possible, too! Save Your Tears is 5 to 6 weeks away from also overtaking Mood. Bad Habits breaks into the top 100, with lots of time to climb. Step 2: Estimated actual year end positions based on current trends and weeks remaining. EST Year end | Song | Artist | YE Est Pts | 1 | Levitating | Dua Lipa ft. Remember what I mentioned earlier about that list of long-time artists who were adding a decade to their YE total--time to add Keith Urban and Pink to that list for the 2020s

Regardless of which song finishes #2 between BL and SYT, Abel will have a #1, #2, and #3 YE finish in just 2 years, only needing 2 songs to complete the trifecta.

2021 being like 2017 with the possibility of some songs having high YE positions despite not peaking at Top 5 or Top 10 with songs like "WITHOUT YOU" peaking at #8, "What You Know Bout Love" at #9, "Best Friend" at #14, "Heartbreak Anniversary" at #16, "my ex's best friend" at #20, etc.

The absolute best songs are amazing and probably will be remembered as some of the best hits of the decade, while the absolute worst songs are horrific trashfires that should never have been greenlit, let alone become popular. In fact, this seems to be a pattern every 4 years going back to 2005. That year, 2009, and 2013 also had very high peaks and very low valleys in terms of quality.

For one, each of those years had a ton of both great and terrible music, while this year has been more middle of the road than any of them. For another, I don’t think there’s anything on the level of Play, Love Me/UOENO or the unholy trifecta of 2017 in terms of “worst of all time” material. Although I will say...I’ve never actually sat through the entirety of Fancy Like because as soon as the chorus hits, I feel the need to get the hell outta there. I would also say that I don’t think the best stuff measures up to any of those years, but then again, I usually need a year to evaluate how new music compares to old stuff.

I disagree on 2017 being a mixed bag of a year. The bad outweighed the good by a considerable margin, to the point where I'd call it one of pop music's worst years (although it is slightly better than 2016, the worst year I've looked at). 2013 was decent, while I haven't listened to 2009 or 2005. 2. I'm guessing the unholy trifecta of 2017 are 1-800, Tunnel Vision and Body Like A Back Road 3. I'm similar to Mike Rivera when it comes to processing new music. It takes me a while to fully process my thoughts when a song is currently a hit, and my opinions often settles down after the fact. For example, I still don't know whether I'd put Good 4 U in the 4/5 or 5/5 tier (I'll figure that out when I listen to the Year-End list).

I think 2013 was one of the best years for pop music ever (well, at least since the late 90's). 2003 is another of the best ones in my opinion so hopefully 2023 is going to be amazing too.
I think 2009 was one of the worst. Maybe 2nd worst after 2011. It was a low point for pop music. I think it's why Adele had such extra-ordinary success. When you hear Rolling in the Deep or Someone Like You on the radio after 3+ years of a constant barrage of Max Martin, RedOne, David Guetta and Dr. Luke, it sounds so fresh and like the most amazing thing in the world.

The unholy trifecta of 2017 were “I get any girl I want, I don’t gotta rape,” “the old Taylor is dead,” and the pothole fetish anthem. But c’mon, you can’t deny how great the good stuff was. We also had a holy union in the form of DNA, Praying and Castle on the Hill. And that’s without counting Green Light

"Praying" being on the 2017 Year End lifts that year up a lot on its own. But in general I feel that 2016-2018 run was kind of rough.
I mean just looking at the YE number ones alone: Love Yourself, Shape of You, and God's Plan. I would call those mediocre, bad, and mediocre (though obviously that's just my opinion). Old Town Road, Blinding Lights, and (projected) Levitating is such an upgrade it's kind of insane IMO.

I don’t know what to compare 2021 too, there was alot of good such as Levitating, Save Your Tears, Olivia Rodrigo, Happier than Ever, my ex’s best friend, Heartbreak Anniversary, Starting Over, telepatia, Good Days, etc. but there also some bad such as Just the Way, Heat Waves, Lil Bit, Put Your Records On, Fancy Like, Bang!, Lonely, Holy, etc but the good does outweigh the bad in this situation so I would say somewhere around a 2007.

2021 doesn't feel like a year that will be remembered tbh. i think a lot of people will have trouble naming "the big hits of 2021". not saying they AREN'T popular or the songs themselves will be forgotten but i doubt many will immediately associate something with 2021

I might be alone in thinking 2021 is one of the if not the best year of this century (so far at least). Based on so far what's likely to make the year end list I think my great tier could reach 30+ with only a couple in terrible tier

Guys, what do you think if I make the January/December chart year a 54 WEEK year, in order for it to match with the true start of 2022?

Songs like Good Days, Happier Than Ever, Leave The Door Open, and Kiss Me More might be remembered more as a background recurring memory, the same way songs like Rather Be, Lean On, Trap Queen and 24k Magic from previous years all do for me. I don’t get the hate for Heat Waves at all, it’s such an energetic and fun song for now, but i can see it being another song that does well internationally and ages very mixed for me like Feel it Still or Dance Monkey. It’s also very fitting for what’s going on outside with all the literal heat waves we been getting.

2014 is probably my favourite of the century. I like every song in the top 40 except Wiggle (meh), Drunk In Love (good in mashups but boring alone), Loyal (trash) and Latch (good in mashups but meh alone). Loads of great songs outside the top 40 too excluding repeats like Rather Be, Ain't It Fun, Classic, A Sky Full of Stars, Cool Kids, Hey Brother, Trumpets, Animals, 2 On, Love Runs Out, Shower, Me & My Broken Heart, Brave, Sweather Weather, Birthday, Do What U Want, Can't Remember To Forget You, Stay The Night and Adore You. I also never realised that Burn finished as high as #39. 2012 was another great year end chart, plus obviously 2010

2019 has been waaaaaay underrated in this thread. My top three of the decade is probably 2015, 2011, and 2019.

While January-March of 2019 was weak and April-August was 19 weeks of Lil Nas X/Billy Ray Cyrus, 2019 is really an underrated chart year. It had so many songs that had great chart runs, mostly helped in longevity. Then the YE Top 3 were all in the G.O.A.T Hot 100 (I think there are some years that also did that) and even the 2020 YE Top 4 all started their runs at late 2019.
