Again, though, how is that any more "manipulation" than fans purchasing multiple copies of the same single? Whether they kept the copies or gifted them to others. And the same goes for deep-discounted singles (regular or maxi) back in the day. They counted the same as singles that were priced notably higher. If Billboard didn't do anything about that, I'd be surprised if they did anything about this. If I had to guess, I'd say the issue is more widespread and common, and easier to do and pull off. I can't say for certain though but it's definitely more in the open now and I think credibility is taking a hit because of it.

When has Drake ever complained about the charts or commented on how they worked? You clearly have him confused with Nicki or something. He was blocked at #2 this year by an album fraudulently using tour bundles for a tour that was not happening and didn't even say anything, so why would he do that for Hot 100. Billboard will hopefully just change rules/policies next year on how sales are being counted on Hot 100. They obviously see how much unrealistic numbers BTS are generating from web stores every single week (especially since Gary Trust also does the Global 200 chart summary which doesn't include web store sales and has notable differences for them every week). I'm also sure they see at this point how ridiculous influence sales still have on making fishy jumps to #1. It's gonna eventually be addressed ala bundles.

Depending on if they care more about clicks or consistency, the easy thing to do would be to just not count web store sales, which would put H100 in line with their very own global chart.

it's gonna look strange in the future when people look back on this era and see BTS with 50 #1's. BB needs to do something about sales Personally, I don't consider Life Goes On a legit #1 due to the blatant tactics expressed I wonder if chart fans said the same thing in 1964 with The Beatles? TB chart domination that year far exceeded anything we see today - because artists usually released 1 single every couple of months, no album bombs, only physical singles could chart, etc. Bee Gees 1978 + songs they wrote/backing vocals - that would've been tagged as features today. The webstore sales need better verification. It's similar to when the RIAA changed the certification from 'shipped' to a few weeks later when you had albums 'ship Platinum,' but then would 'return Gold.' The goal is NOT to stop sales - revenue and fan engagement IS the objective of commercial music.

He was blocked off #2 twice this year, life is good and LNCL, and i never seen him say a single word about not hitting #1. Maybe some artists should take notes, especially the ones who are apparently A list ๐

I mean half the number ones this year already feel like they've been forgotten about sooooo

In Asia, they're definitely likely apart of history. However outside of Asia, I don't think ( as of yet) they'll be remembered for much once the dust settles. I say this because they don't have a single hit that's going to be remembered as a classic of any sort or that is even truly widely recognizable, and there's no acts in history who held up well overtime with zero memorable songs. High School Musical, Glee Cast, etc were also phenoms with the younger demo, had obsessive fanbases, and sold a load yet once the curtains closed it seems like an extremely distant memory today. Also all of the group members are not really known at all outside their fanbase in terms of having celebrity recognition, they could walk down the street and nobody who isn't a BTS fan would immediately recognize them. That probably has to do with the way their label/K-Pop industry micro manages them and doesn't let them really do much and prevents any possible scandal of any sort.

Yes, they'll go down in the history as the biggest group / movement from the east but you can't pinpoint their western audience, the manipulation tactics like using proxy/vpn, mass buying makes it impossible. Same goes for many kpop bands. Remember when literally unknown & just formed SuperM (with mini album) beat Summer walker for #1 bb (who btw had the highest streaming week for a female r&b artist ever) even industry pundits where shocked like, where are these audience? But unlike the biggest groups from last ~2 decades, Nsync, Backstreet boys, 1D whose music is still played & is relevant among general audience (even though you aren't a stan of em) i don't see 5yrs or even 2 yrs from now someone asking "Hey, put that Bts record on".

I think you guys are being pessimistic about BTSโ as a younger zoomer, we remember Glee and High School Musical perfectly well, for better or for worse. And I know more than enough BTS fans to imagine they won't at least be somewhat remembered by history, if for nothing more than making k-pop a thing for a little bit in the west.

BTS is actually pretty good, even though Iโm perfectly fine not hearing โDynamiteโ for a while...
The fact that they havenโt burnt out is surprising, especially because theyโre Korean. Not only did they invade the US, they have an honorable track record to go with it. I think of them a little more highly than High School Musical and Glee... I understand the connection, but there is more substance here.

They got to raise money for them because the D@mn coffee table book size thing costs $50 bucks. That'll buy (at least)a years worth of Kimchi & Ramen noodles & much better spent by the way..

I think it's perfectly obvious that they'll be remembered. There's no way they won't be.
You ARE right to wonder about how well their music will be remembered. As part of Gen Z, I don't know a single person that hasn't heard of BTS. However, ask someone to name a BTS song and you'll get MUCH fewer answers. "Dynamite" is the first BTS song most of my friends have ever even heard. That single will probably stick around. The others? No.

I meant to say I just don't think they'll go down in history the way biggest artists from generations with huge hit songs tend to. High School Musical, Glee Cast, and as of now BTS are type of artists that dominated for a few years but to someone who wasn't in that specific demographic and invested at the time they're not memorable whatsoever. A very much 'you had to be there to understand' type artist. As said, having actual hits with the public that will hold up long-term is a big part of that. If 95% of the public can't name a song it kinda limits your long-term memorability.

If 95% of the public can't name a song it kinda limits your long-term memorability. I will say that the impact that HSM and Glee have had on popular music is actually pretty far-reaching when you think about it. HSM kick-started the careers of several major names in entertainment and brought the movie-musical genre to a wider and younger audience than ever before. Arguably, we wouldn't have gotten Glee without HSM's success. And from there, we likely wouldn't have seen the indie boom of 2012 without Glee either. So BTS' success in breaking into the US market could at the very least have ripple effects in music, although those have yet to be seen.

I am starting to think that this decade may bring a huge change to the US charts, that being non-english songs and artists having a stronger presence, and I'm not talking only about spanish, but also korean, maybe russian, french, german I still really think African in dancehall and afrobeat have a really good chance of crossing over this decade. I know there was a brief moment in the 2010s when dancehall and tropical house was a brief fad thanks to Major Lazer, Drake, Rihanna, and Justin Bieber, but I think now that there are established artists like Burna Boy, Popcaan, as well as the UK drill and R&B scene being heavily influenced by it, African music could be more than a fad. I mean it's to the UK what reggaeton is to the US.

Happy one year to blinding lights! This week will be itโs 52nd week and itโs still as fresh as it was on its first week. 4 weeks at number 1, record extending 41st week in the top 10, record breaking 33rd week in the top 5, #1 biggest song of 2020 and a potential repeat for the 2021 YE, multiple nominations and performances throughout the award shows, one of the main songs for the superbowl performance, all achieved within the year

Wait, people are mad because lots of people are buying songs? That's actual sales numbers...what am I missing? The fact it's a band from the East? Were the same people complaining about Glee when it was charting 10 songs a week because people were crazy about the show?

While it did, "Blinding Lights" proved me wrong, and emphasis on the word proved, because 40+ weeks in the Top 10, spending a year within Top 10, and potential to be a defining hit of the 2020s. And to think, it also had a nasty second week in the charts.

He wouldn't have, lol. He doesn't care nearly that much about charts and he likes BTS (he took pictures with them at the 2019 BBMAs and told them they were the biggest thing in the world). Billboard does need to revamp a lot of their rules and close up a lot of the loopholes that still remain open for certain artists to exploit, that's for sure.

When I heard the snippet of Blinding Lights right after Heartless was released, I knew it would be the bigger record just from the pop sensitivities in it's production, but I did not see it becoming as big as it got. I never thought he'd ever get another hit as big as The Hills. I'm glad I was proven wrong because Blinding Lights is a one-of-a-kind record and deserves all it's success.

Also very interesting, AIWFCIY is only 65k ahead of Brenda Lee in the US... this could get interesting!
