I love Kenny but he is a 2000’s artist in my mind so I couldn’t rank him higher than #9. Believe me when I say there was a lot of debate about including Kenny Chesney in the series for the '90s Icons of Country! I know I'm not alone in thinking that he didn't truly establish himself as the artist he is today until sometime after 2000. Kenny has even admitted that his career really didn't start taking off until he stopped trying to imitate George Strait and instead found his own niche. Speaking as someone who grew up with country radio in the '90s, I can tell you that Kenny was never a top-tier act during that time. It actually wasn't until the song "Don't Happen Twice" came out in early 2001 that he began to graduate to the next level. Can anyone confirm he's a huge asshole? I've heard horror stories my entire life. I loved T-R-O-U-B-L-E and Tell Me I Was Dreaming back in the day though. I have to say that as an early fan of his, it's been quite disappointing to hear this rumor over the years and especially eye-rolling when he was blocking people with a blue checkmark on Twitter last year during the election. That said, I didn't factor any of that into my ranking for him during this period of time and judged him only on his output during the 90s. I did get to see him live in concert back in his heyday and I have to say he put on a rockin' show (he was on tour with Trisha Yearwood and Little Texas as the opening act). Travis definitely was one of the bigger country acts during the time period of probably 1991 and 1992. "A Thousand Miles From Nowhere" and "Ain't That Lonely Yet" are a great one-two punch in his discography. I love their production and melodies. Agreed! Dwight is very much an underrated artist on Pulse and I personally would love to see a rankdown for him sometime in the near future. I know he isn't everyone's cup of tea and his voice is probably just as grating to some as Chris Stapleton's is, but I've always found his style to be very unique. Also, his Dwight Live! album remains one of my favorite live albums of all-time and I still like to revisit it from time to time.

the whole situation with Travis and his politics being so recent definitely played a part in my rankings and thinking back on that I do regret that for sure because I LOVE a HUGE chunk of his music. If I was to remove that from factoring in I think I probably would have ranked him around where I ranked Aaron Tippin
I remember enjoying Kenny Chesney when he was first breaking onto the scene. Loved "Me and You", "She's Got It All", and ESPECIALLY "That's Why I'm Here". I was obsessed with that song back in 1998, I had the CD single and listened to it all the time with my best friend who hated Country but liked that song (and Jo Dee's "I'm Alright")

40. Kenny Chesney
8 Top 10 Hits including three #1s, One Gold and Two Platinum Album Certifications; One Double Platinum
OMG I cannot at you still trying to pretend that all this success just simply didn't happen tim 😂 Like yes, Kenny was OBVIOUSLY bigger in the '00s than he was in the '90s, but the '90s phase of his career was still a very real thing. He literally had a successful enough '90s run to put out a whole entire Greatest Hits album in 2000 (and a fairly large one at that)

Apparently he got 3x as many #1 hits in the last couple years of the '90s than Tracy Byrd got in the entire decade

Anyway, if you didn't notice during the reveal, I was originally supposed to be a co-host for this rankdown. I backed out cause I was too busy, but not until I had argued 'til I was blue in the face that Kenny Chesney deserved to be included I talked them into it, and then I ditched them! HA! He was my parting gift to y'all ;)

Suzy may not have been anywhere near the biggest names but her output is among the best of the 90's with all her albums being essential listening imo.

Kenny Chesney belonged in the bottom 10 of this for sure, but at least he didn't escape too far beyond it. He just plain sucks.

I really struggled ranking Travis Tritt. I ultimately chose to TRY and not let my current feelings about him interfere with my appreciation for him in the 90’s. I even considered him a #1 contender but I think #8 is about accurate.

I even considered him a #1 contender but I think #8 is about accurate. It’s almost hard to put into perspective how big he was in the moment. Even for me at a young age, I was very familiar with Travis Tritt and his music was everywhere then. I had mentioned that I saw him early on, but what I failed to also say is that I later learned that the venue (this was in Omaha, Nebraska) ended up having to take extra security measures for future concerts because of the Travis Tritt show! I guess you could’ve called it a s**tshow , but apparently he got the crowd so amped up and rowdy that going forward the venue took extra measures to prevent whatever happened at his show that night. Anyways, just another random anecdote from my younger years lol.

No, your eyes aren't fooling as the members of Lonestar used to wear cowboy hats! They ditched their wranglers and cowboy boots for a more polished look in the lead-up to "Amazed" and the Lonely Grill era (this change also just happened to coincide with the same time that John Rich departed the group).

*waiting to see what y'all did with John Michael Montgomery* LOL same. Same. I'm a little surprised to not see John Michael Montgomery out yet but he was more successful than all those out (90's wise) so I guess that's carrying him. Hopefully not much longer as he has already overstayed.

I actually like a lot of Lonestar's material prior to their transition into more country pop as it was based more in the neotraditional sound that much of '90s country encompassed. That goes for both "Come Cryin' to Me" and "Everthing's Changed" as well as "You Walked In" which has always kind of been one of my guilty pleasures.
As for John Michael Montgomery, I didn't really warm up to him as an artist until much closer to the What I Do the Best era in 1996. I suppose that's because he was insanely popular for a time and country radio was just obsessed with everything he released. Speaking of, my aunt was such a big fan that she always went to see him at Fan Fair in Nashville (when that was still a thing) and it got to a point that I'm pretty they were on a first name basis lol. I first saw him live in 1993 when he opened for Kenny Rogers; a second time when he opened for Reba McEntire in 1994 (the same show that was also filmed for a TV special); and finally a third time when he was on George Strait's Country Music Festival tour in 1998.

I really have no excuse for my low ranking of Tanya Tucker and I'm sitting here scratching my head wondering just what in the world I was thinking. The only thing I can say is that I used the preference revealer for this and looking back I definitely should've made some edits! I will also add that I happen to consider Tanya more of an '80s icon than a '90s one, so that may very well have been my train of thought when completing this.

Just wow @ Mark Chesnutt not even being able to make the top 30. For once we're in agreement!!! In looking at the list though it's hard to see who exactly Mark would take the place of as it's looking incredibly stacked from here on out. I take that back, Mark definitely should've made it in over Collin Raye.

I’d even say Mark should be above Deana Carter (unpopular opinion to have I’m sure), but he had much more of an impact on the genre than she did. Save for one epic album era, she just didn’t have the longevity during the decade that Mark had overall.

Collin Raye for sure belongs ahead of Mark Chesnutt so we will have to agree to disagree there lol
I think a fair argument could be made for Wynonna, Diamond Rio, and Deana Carter though. Especially Deana, where she only had one huge album and one other album that had minor success, unfortunately.
