Off to a good start. Neither of these are among the better acts in this list.

YESSSS!!! Those of you who have been around for all the year-end rankdowns know how I feel about Sawyer Brown... I have literally hated every song I have ever heard from them (except for "Some Girls Do", which is literally the only thing from them I have ever heard on the radio) And "The Race Is On", but I do not think theirs is the version I have heard the most? The lead singer has one of the worst voices I have ever heard in my life. I would literally take Tyler Farr or Brantley Gilbert over him.

I can't tell where the Sawyer Brown commentary ends and the Billy Ray commentary begins

Anyway, Billy Ray Cyrus is another one that I'm just not awfully familiar with. I love "Achy Breaky Heart", but it's honestly the only song from him I can hear in my head based on title alone. Plus a couple more modern collaborations from other people, of course. I feel like I would enjoy him more if I took the time to explore his output more, as I do enjoy his voice well enough. He's kinda been typecast as a one trick pony though after the success of ABH, so this is a good spot for him to end up. His legacy's been tainted by his own success, lmao.

Well, this is a choice. Trace Adkins has been inconsistent af through the years, and seemed to kind of turn into a poor man's Toby Keith at his commercial prime, but he's also given us several truly iconic jams! Especially in the '90s, which is the phase of his career we're supposed to be ranking him by here...

I don't know much about Neal McCoy, as he's another one whose commercial prime happened long before I had even learned my shapes and letters. But this exists, which is about all I need to know about him...

But this exists, which is about all I need to know about him... Much like with Neal, I'd have to assume Trace's politics may have gotten factored into some of those lower rankings even though we're basing this off of their output from the 90s. Speaking for myself, I took that part out of the equation and tried my best to just rank them based on that. Don't let my low ranking for Trace fool you though as I do consider him to be an icon of this decade, but I just thought more of the others I put ahead of him.

Marty Stuart is somebody that I simply am not even slightly familiar with. I've heard his name all my life, but he's always been somebody who simply existed before I was born/before I was old enough to pay attention. By the time I started following country music, he was basically at the exact same point in his career that he is at now, lmao. Yea, I think this is the reason for all of the lower rankings and why he is the first one out. Other than say maybe "Now That's Country" and the Travis Tritt duet "The Whiskey Ain't Workin' Anymore", I doubt there's very little of Marty's output played on todays country radio. CMT was a huge influence on me at a young age and because of that I got introduced to Marty's music early on. I've been a longtime fan and was thrilled when I finally got to see him open up for Chris Stapleton a couple of years ago.

I like some of Trace's old hits like Every Light in the House is On/No Thinkin' Thing/I'm Tryin', but my distaste for him now kind of taints his whole career.

I haven't met many country artists, but I did get the chance to meet Aaron Tippin when he performed at our county fair back home in Nebraska. He saw that I was with a disabled friend and after the end of the show his tour manager came up to us and asked if we'd like to come backstage. He is without a doubt a class act and is incredibly personable.

Keep wiping out the people I barely know!!! Lmao I'm not overly familiar with Aaron Tippin, although I do probably know 4-5 songs by him compared to the 1-2 I know from people like Marty, Neal, Billy Ray, etc. Those 4-5 songs are all jams though, so I'd probably enjoy learning more about him! Ironically my favorite is probably "Where The Stars And Stripes and Eagle Fly", which the rest of y'all probably hate because 'Merica

I simply was not around to enjoy the heyday of groups in country music... I frankly have no love for Shenandoah, Restless Heart, Ricochet, Sawyer Brown, Alabama, Diamond Rio, or any of the others, as they are like 95% before my time, save for some of Diamond Rio and Alabama's later hits. I kinda wish I had been around to experience them more, as I feel like I got a raw deal with the groups that I've grown up around... I'm sure Rascal Flatts, Lady A, Little Big Town, etc. are absolutely no comparison to most of these groups.

Yep, Alison has a BEAUTIFUL voice, but she frankly doesn't have the body of work to stand on that most of the artists above her do. Also as great as her voice is, she's a little too far from the mainstream for me to have spent much time following her. I'm not huge on bluegrass, so my favorite songs from her have always been the more commercial ones. But damn do I enjoy the artistry of her and her band if I ever stumble across a one-off studio performance video or something :)

Looking back on the CMA Awards in 1995, I almost can't believe that Alison Krauss was able to walk away with the Female Vocalist of the Year trophy. After the success of "When You Say Nothing At All", the industry became completely enamored with her. I remember them even wanting to put her compilation album Now That I've Found You: A Collection into contention, but that of course goes against their rules.
I too became a fan and remember going out to buy their next album So Long So Wrong in 1997 (I say their because it was released as Alison Krauss & Union Station). There's still some songs from that I revisit even today including "I Can Let Go Now" and "Looking in the Eyes of Love".

I only ranked Alison where I did because of her output commercially compared to the other true icons. Her voice is angelic and she is amazing!
